Ayla's origins are unknown, though she may be an ancestor or descendant of [[Leah]]. Ayla assumed the title of Chief of [[Ioka Village]], as she was the strongest warrior in the tribe. Her people have been battling the [[Reptites]] for supremacy, so whenever she sees one, her first instinct is to fight them. Because of this, when she sees [[Crono]] and his party assaulted by the reptilian beings at the foot of the [[Mystic Mountain]], Ayla immediately acts to drive them all away. Then, when Crono and his friends join the fray, Ayla is mightily impressed by their strength, and invites them to feast with her tribe to celebrate their victory. A warrior of her tribe, [[Kino]], does not understand why his Chief would throw a feast for outsiders, and so when the celebration ends and the party is asleep, he steals their [[Gate Key]] and runs for the [[Forest Maze]].
