Ayla is the fearsome, strong warrior chief of prehistory. Her origins are unknown, though she may be an ancestor or descendant of [[Leah]]. Ayla assumed the title of Chief of [[Ioka]] due to her strength. Her people battled the [[Reptites]] for supremacy; whenever she spotted one, her first instinct was to fight it. Because of this, when she saw [[Crono]] and his party assaulted by the reptilian beings at the foot of the [[Mystic Mts]], Ayla immediately acted to drive them all away. When Crono and his friends joined the fray, Ayla was impressed by their might and invited them to feast with her tribe to celebrate their victory. A warrior of her tribe, [[Kino]], did not understand why his Chief would throw a feast for outsiders. When the celebration ended and the party fell aleep, he stole their [[Gate Key]] and ran for the [[Forest Maze]]. Ayla's nobility prompted her to aid Crono in recovering the Key, but when they reached the Maze and cornered him, Kino admitted that he only took it out of jealousy -- and that he loves Ayla and was worried that she would choose Crono over him unless Kino did something. Once Ayla hit him over the head (literally) with the fact that she loved him and not Crono, he apologized but admitted that the Key was stolen by [[Azala]] and the Reptites.

Ayla helped Crono's group by giving them [[Dreamstone]], which was necessary to forge the [[Masamune]]. Later, when [[Laruba]] village was attacked on Crono's return to her era, she agreed to join Crono's party permanently. Ayla can always be trusted to take the most complicated of ideas and put them in the simplest possible terms; she has a limited vocabulary, but is highly intelligent for a cavewoman. She also demonstrates intelligent morality, quoting the "law of earth" -- that the strong live and the weak die. She cannot use magic; the explanation given by [[Spekkio]] is that magic did not exist in her time. Chrono Cross suggests that one might interpret Spekkio's message to mean that her species has not been evolved through the [[Frozen Flame]] and [[Lavos]] yet (an event that happened in [[3000000 B.C.]]), and she as a result does not possess the biological capacity for magic. She is possibly sexually liberated, as she notes to Lucca that she likes strong people, whether man or woman (to which Lucca replies that she's not in to that sort of thing). This humorous exchange was removed by censors in the English release. She also expressed to Marle concern over whether Marle's breasts were developed enough to raise children; this too was removed.

Though Ayla's vocabulary as an early human is limited, her intellect is keen and her humanity passionate and inquisitive. She lives with respect to the "law of earth" -- that the strong live and the weak die. Because she predates contact with the [[Frozen Flame]], she cannot use magic. Ayla also expressed concern over the small size of [[Marle]]'s breasts, worrying that they weren't sufficient to give milk to children; this exchange was also censored. Ayla is possibly named after a character in the book series "Clan of the Cave Bear" by Jean M. Auel. The character is prehistoric but somewhat intelligent; she is a Cro-Magnon girl taken in by Neanderthals. She learns to hunt, and eventually becomes a great leader, but is exiled after a resentful man becomes chief.

Chrono Cross

Ayla is the proposed name of Leah's future child. This begs the question of whether Leah is her mother. The actual name is revealed to mean "new song of land."

Theory and Analysis

Name Origin

Ayla is possibly named after a character in the book series "Clan of the Cave Bear" by Jean M. Auel. The character is a Cro-Magnon girl taken in by Neanderthals. She learns to hunt and becomes a great leader, but is exiled after a resentful man becomes chief.
