Ayla's origins are unknown, though she may be an ancestor of [[Leah]]. Ayla assumed the title of Chief of [[Ioka Village]], as she was the strongest warrior in the tribe. Her people have been battling the [[Reptites]] for supremacy, so whenever she sees one, her first instinct is to fight them. Because of this, when she sees [[Crono]] and his party assaulted by the reptilian beings at the foot of the [[Mystic Mountain]], Ayla immediately acts to drive them all away. Then, when Crono and his friends join the fray, Ayla is mightily impressed by their strength, and invites them to feast with her tribe to celebrate their victory. A warrior of her tribe, [[Kino]], does not understand why his Chief would throw a feast for outsiders, and so when the celebration ends and the party is asleep, he steals their [[Gate Key]] and runs for the [[Forest Maze]]. Ayla's nobility prompts her to aid Crono in recovering the Key, but when they reach the Maze and corner him, Kino admits that he only took it out of jealousy, that he loves Ayla and was worried that she would choose Crono over him unless Kino did something. Ayla helps Crono's group by giving them the Dreamstone, which is necessary to forge the Masamune. Later, when the Laruba Village is attacked on Crono's second return to her era, she agrees to join Crono's party permanently. Ayla can always be trusted to take the most complicated of ideas and put them in the simplest possible terms; she has a limited vocabulary, but is highly intelligent for a cavewoman. She cannot use magic; the explanation given by Spekkio is that magic did not exist in her time. Chrono Cross suggests that one might interpret Spekkio's message to mean that her species has not been evolved through the Frozen Flame and Lavos yet due to contact in 3,000,000 B.C., and she thusly does not possess the biological capacity for magic.
Ayla's fate is unknown, but it is probable that she returns to 65,000,000 B.C. to live out her life peacefully.
Name Origin
Ayla is possibly named after a character in the book series "Clan of the Cave Bear" by Jean M. Auel. The character is prehistoric but somewhat intelligent; she is a Cro-Magnon girl taken in by Neanderthals. She learns to hunt, and eventually becomes a great leader, but is exiled after a resentful man becomes chief.
