Chrono Cross HD Edition / Re: RetroArch Setup

Try this. It's worked in the past when others have had problems, problems I don't yet understand.

Chrono Cross HD Edition / Re: RetroArch Setup

Theoretically, since RetroArch has an Android app, it should be possible. I foresee it running into problems with inadequate specs however, since even some computers can't take advantage of all its features.

If you have any luck with it, please let me know!

Unfortunately, there are very few folks who know how to mod Chrono Cross. Check out our toolsets and these to see what's potentially possible.

General Discussion / Re: Thoughts On Discord and Banning
« on: August 09, 2021, 08:35:57 pm »
I don't check the Discord channel much at all, so my knowledge of what's been happening there is nil. That being said, as an admin here, I will point out the Compendium does have a charter with a code of conduct that I believe should include any forum affiliated with us. And the first 3 rules for members are:

1. shall treat all other members in a courteous and respectful manner.
2. shall not post or link to any material which may be found offensive by other members.
3. shall not post derogatory or insulting statements toward any other member or post comments intended to annoy or provoke other members.

I trust Mauron and Boo's judgment on this, especially considering the offending post was made after specific rules for the Discord were introduced. The suggestion of a three-strike system also seems fair. (And please keep the Naughty Nu, that's hilarious.)

For Discord (and Compendium!) users, I caution against both laughably dramatic tantrums like the one above, and white knight brigading. Just be civil, y'all.

I do disagree on one thing, however.

Political / personal ideologies, thoughts around the validity of gender identity, opinions about various religions, etc are not really at home in a place centered around video games, let alone Chrono Trigger. There are places where those topics are appropriate, but the Compendium - and any place affiliated with it - definitely isn't the place for rhetoric around those topics. Common sense, people!

The Compendium, at least in the past, was ripe with "political" talk—and great discussion was had over it! But always in the appropriate thread, of course ("The $%*! frustration thread", "Fuck Sexism", etc.); the Discord's general chat, where anyone can come and go, probably isn't the place for it.

Yeah, that's neat. I also struggle to see how the black element matches Venus, but the others are perfect.

Diarmuid then most likely corresponds to Polaris as a pole star.

Huh, that's really interesting. I've always wondered why they hadn't ported Cross to anything else.

Though, given that it's on the PSN, I wonder what technical limitations are preventing them from using that one instead?

During Nikki's concert, he says:
   Lo! The stars doth
   twinkle in accord
   with our song...

   The brighter one is the
   Star of Diarmuid...
And next to it the Star
   of Grania can be seen
   shining so faintly...
   We mariners navigate
   our vessels by these
   two stars!

Now, I don't know of any real stars with those names, but Diarmuid comes from Irish mythology. Meanwhile, Grania, at first, doesn't seem to relate to anything, but I quickly realized it should actually be Gráinne from the same tale (which is pronounced like "grania", I believe).

Are these the only named celestial bodies in the Chronoverse? I'm wondering if these two stars belong to the "five brother stars" told by Belthasar to represent the Dragons. Curiously, during the same concert, Nikki drops the line "Neptunian nymph", which suggests the presence of a Neptune in Chrono history as well, either as a mythological figure or a planet. Or it could just be a grammatical quirk.

The Great To-Do List / Re: [6000] Chrono Cross sound pack?
« on: July 23, 2021, 02:54:56 pm »
I was surprised to learn we didn't already have these.

I've mentioned them before, but the folks at Retrograde Amnesia have been doing a podcast about Chrono Cross, and I noticed that they play the game's SFX throughout it. I reached out to them, and they were kind enough to share some of the sounds and how they got them.

Turns out it's as simple as using a GameShark code to turn off in-game music, leaving only sound effects and background noises, and then capturing that audio with a recording program. Sure, it's not the original files, but the quality is just as good!

I've attached the few they shared with me and use in their podcast. I'm sure there's plenty more in the game, so if anyone feels up to it, we have a method now for getting the rest.

General Discussion / Re: Another Eden out now on Steam
« on: March 31, 2021, 02:18:49 pm »
I typically don't like playing RPGs on my phone, so I've been holding out on Another Eden's potential Switch port... but playing this on PC is probably worth it. Thanks for the heads up.

Something else that occurred to me while putting these scans together is that I think the name of the Blackbird is a pun. There are a few sections in these scans that are labeled "KuroTori Check" (クロトリチェック). "KuroTori" is just short for Chrono Trigger (Kuro[no] Tori[gaa]). These sort of shortened portmanteau titles are pretty common in Japanese media, but I didn't get it at first so I spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to figure out what "kurotori" meant. While I was trying to figure it out it occurred to me that "kuro" in Japanese means black, and "tori" means bird. So I went and looked up the Japanese name for the Blackbird. It's 黒鳥号 or "kurotorigou". I guess the "gou" on the end makes it "the Black Swan" rather than just the black bird? Regardless, I doubt it's a coincidence that the game "KuroTori" features a vehicle called "kurotorigou". I think it's a sort of meta pun on the game's title.

I love little word plays like this. Wish English had a more elegant way to translate such things.

I haven't played FF Tactics yet (I got into Tactics Ogre first), but Cidolfus is probably my favorite boss fight in all of FFXIV, in the Ivalice raids.

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Re: Serge is Magus Reincarnation

I've seen this theory before, and it makes no sense to me. I can't wrap my head around it.

Why do you think Serge is Magus?
