The Great To-Do List / Re: [6000] Chrono Cross sound pack?
« on: July 23, 2021, 02:54:56 pm »
I was surprised to learn we didn't already have these.

I've mentioned them before, but the folks at Retrograde Amnesia have been doing a podcast about Chrono Cross, and I noticed that they play the game's SFX throughout it. I reached out to them, and they were kind enough to share some of the sounds and how they got them.

Turns out it's as simple as using a GameShark code to turn off in-game music, leaving only sound effects and background noises, and then capturing that audio with a recording program. Sure, it's not the original files, but the quality is just as good!

I've attached the few they shared with me and use in their podcast. I'm sure there's plenty more in the game, so if anyone feels up to it, we have a method now for getting the rest.

General Discussion / Re: Another Eden out now on Steam

I typically don't like playing RPGs on my phone, so I've been holding out on Another Eden's potential Switch port... but playing this on PC is probably worth it. Thanks for the heads up.

Something else that occurred to me while putting these scans together is that I think the name of the Blackbird is a pun. There are a few sections in these scans that are labeled "KuroTori Check" (クロトリチェック). "KuroTori" is just short for Chrono Trigger (Kuro[no] Tori[gaa]). These sort of shortened portmanteau titles are pretty common in Japanese media, but I didn't get it at first so I spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to figure out what "kurotori" meant. While I was trying to figure it out it occurred to me that "kuro" in Japanese means black, and "tori" means bird. So I went and looked up the Japanese name for the Blackbird. It's 黒鳥号 or "kurotorigou". I guess the "gou" on the end makes it "the Black Swan" rather than just the black bird? Regardless, I doubt it's a coincidence that the game "KuroTori" features a vehicle called "kurotorigou". I think it's a sort of meta pun on the game's title.

I love little word plays like this. Wish English had a more elegant way to translate such things.

I haven't played FF Tactics yet (I got into Tactics Ogre first), but Cidolfus is probably my favorite boss fight in all of FFXIV, in the Ivalice raids.

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Re: Serge is Magus Reincarnation

I've seen this theory before, and it makes no sense to me. I can't wrap my head around it.

Why do you think Serge is Magus?

I've been playing Dragon Quest XI a lot. I love it. There's sooo much to do. I'm 90 hours in the game and finally "finished", only to realize there's an entire third story arc.

These are amazing. Such a unique sound to them. The saxophone is nice. But when the battle starts... those drums and that bass? Yesss.

In any case, I'm glad it's working for you now!

Chrono Cross HD Edition / Re: RetroArch Setup

Here ya go. It's my exact stuff for RetroArch. You'll still need the PROJECT KID folder with the texture pack, .bin, and .cue files.

If that doesn't work, we'll have to play with the settings to see what's causing the problem.

Hey. I decided to replay Chrono Cross for the first time since I traded in my PS3 for a PS4 and lost access to my PSN version and stumbled onto your project. I've never used Retroarch before but I set it up according to the instructions in your folder and the game seems to be working great except element use freezes the game (sound and charging animation still playing) without any recourse to unfreeze it. Element use by the party always freezes the game, while element use by enemies sometimes freezes the game, if that matters. I'm unsure how to best troubleshoot it and googling hasn't done much to help me out. Does any of the tech folks on the project have any ideas?

Thanks for your efforts- I've always loved Cross and am very bummed out that I have no standard recourse to play it at this time.

Hey, thanks for dropping by!

Unfortunately, I have not heard of that issue. My guess is that it is due to some incompatibility between the RetroArch settings I suggested and your computer (different hardware is going to require different settings). Play around with the settings a bit, starting with putting CD Access Method and CD Loading Speed back to default and GPU Resolution to 2x. Let me know if that works.

I've had one other person have issues getting RetroArch to work as well, though for different a reason (which we never figured out!). In the end, I simply gave them a copy of my entire RetroArch folder as I have it set up, and it worked. So we can certainly try that for you as well.
