Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Re: Chrono Cross
« on: April 28, 2018, 11:25:47 pm »
I personally can't think of it as a spinoff. In essence each game in the series starts in a new timeline/dimension/whatever. CT basically starts in a new timeline w/the Entity's intervention & CC starts in Serge's alternate dimension where he didn't die, spurred by Schala's entanglement with the remnants of Lavos and all that crazy Chronopolis junk (thus making it about as direct a sequel as you can get [with as minimal involvement of the original cast as possible anyway])...and because of it basically retconning the events of RD, it too is basically entirely in its own multitude of worlds.
I enjoyed CC, but it didn't live up to either previous entries to the series. The character development wasn't there and the battle system, while robust, felt like it was a big reason why. I don't know why we needed more than maybe 2 characters of each element, really...and on top of that the new system of elements itself didn't seem like a necessary addition either. Was it all just so they could do the final boss battle "good" ending using the Chrono Cross? It sure felt that forced, anyway. Oh yeah, and a serious lack of Double & Triple Techs, which are almost always a much lauded addition when people talk about CT's battle system...>_>
Also, this is totally in the wrong forum! This is supposed to be non-Chrono discussion! lol, maybe I'll move it later....

Chrono News / Re: Time Magazine ranks Chrono Trigger in Top 100 Games Ever

Just in case you were worried about CT's placement: Time Magazine isn't a gaming anything. As Nelson would say, "Ha-ha, your medium is dying!"

Polling / Re: If the series truly is dead, what kind of fan continuance would you like to see?
« on: April 28, 2018, 07:44:33 pm »
Chrono Cross hack for sure! Though I'm pretty sure Playstation games weren't ROMs (well, except the FF & CT ports...>_<). Mostly I'd just add a crapton of unique dialogue for everyone and at least 3 unique quests for each character...and maybe give Zoah some clothes options. lol
I say this even though I have never understood how to emulate Playstation, much less use hacks for them...Its like you gotta jump through 3 different hoops at once or something every time I've tried in the past.

Polling / Re: If you could change Chrono Cross, how would you do it?
« on: April 28, 2018, 07:37:44 pm »Use Akira Toriyama's art.
I think this is the best feature of the game: not having Akira's art avoids unfair comparison with Dragon Ball
Doesn't really happen w/Dragon Quest at all...and to me the only time it really happened with CT was those lousy anime cut scenes (that Toriyama didn't even do) that randomly changed Crono's build to more match Goku (and don't get me started on what they did w/Glenn's awesome long hair!)...

Oh man, moderating the way I was doing got so TIRING! And the thing is I knew immediately when I was asked what would happen (ah the illustrious draw of power and the inevitable corruption that comes with it). It was fun in its own way too, don't get me wrong (I hope I didn't come across as too stick-in-the-mud), but I don't think I could ever go back to editing what felt like every other post like that again. lol

I feel like this whole thread should just be deleted/archived and we should have a Discord set up...I mean, do any of these messenger services even still exist? lol

General Discussion / Re: What is the abhorrence towards RPG Maker games and the lot?
« on: March 07, 2018, 04:37:13 pm »
As far as I know (which, admittedly isn't a ton) RPG Maker compared to traditional ROM hacks is like comparing consoles to PC. Its just a more standardized way of doing it and is thus restricted a bit more in what it can do with it...

Reality, Real-World Connections, and the Supernatural / "And the wind began to howl..."
« on: January 21, 2018, 03:47:20 pm »
It's apparently the anniversary of when Jimi Hendrix recorded his version of Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower, which ends with that, "And the wind began to howl" and also includes a bit that goes, "Princes kept the view". What with Ted Woosley putting in rockstars Flea & Slash, I wonder if the famous Black Wind quotes weren't at least partially inspired by Dylan....

Oh no, I was a nazi?! Clearly an example of power's corruptive influence. I almost edited the OP (not to edit anything out, but just for old time's sake), but realized I probably wouldn't remember how I used to frame them or anything and then I saw that the forum has thread revival warnings and just laughed at what I would have thought about that back then. The days of forums are long gone, but this one was a gem. Fuck, I can't even remember the name of the other Chrono forum I had tried before the Compendium but they were really strict about thread revivals! As you can see, we let threads around here balloon quite a bit, which I think did turn off newcomers sometimes, but now its all there for anyone to read in its entirety, which is wild...I wonder how many Compendium slogans my anti-game thread that was clearly a game thread made....>_>
-------
EDIT: IcyBrian's was the other forum I was thinking of...though I was also part of CT's section of Square's old PlayOnline forums prior to the Compendium.

So, where was I...? Honestly, I have no idea. Years ago I was a depressed sad sack of shit. My gf dumped me for not getting a job and I put a lonesome suicide attempt or two under my belt.
Still don't have a job, but my now gf is supportive and we help each other (and her family we share living space with).
Anyways, it turns out I'm one of those people who's terrible at keeping in touch with friends/family when I'm in a relationship. My best friend at the time of the breakup was going through the passing of his father and my new relationship had me move across country (I'm living it up in Florida now), so even we grew apart (though I spoke to him briefly on FB recently).
As for gaming & the forum...idk, Square changing so dramatically over the years (from talent leaving to form their own teams, director changes, their legal team throwing out all them C&D's to fan projects and just in general leaving turn-based behind) really made me lose hope for anything Chrono (at this point I think I'd prefer they hand the license over to some other dev to do something with). Also, when I moved I got a 360 and still play it quite a bit even now that its "last gen". gt: "V Translanka"...haven't emulated much of anything (had a GBA emu up on my iPad for a while), but did finally get my first Nintendo handheld since my old v1.2 (Play It Loud!) original Gameboy: a New 3DS! Only have Pokemon X (sad that they can't make it play GBA games properly), but whatever, I do enjoy glassesless 3D...my Friend Code: 3196 - 7071 - 0573
I don't know how active I'll be here, but there ya go...

In case anyone remembers, the Smithsonian released the winners of their Art of Video Games public poll (the winners get to be part of a new video game art exhibit)...
While there are clearly some that won on name recognition, I think quite a few actually won that had the better artistic flare! BioShock beat out heavyweights Halo & Gears of War...but sadly, Chrono Trigger & Earthbound both lost out to Link to the Past, which is understandable to a degree...but while it was my favorite LoZ, I admit that a lot of it didn't look as good as it could have. Also, glad to see Phantasy Star get a couple nods, unfortunately Shining Force 2 was still in Adventure with End of the Millennium when it should have been under Combat/Strategy like all the OTHER SRPGs listed....

General Discussion / Re: Video Game Discussion Thread
« on: May 03, 2011, 07:44:34 am »Also they should start worrying about how they number the installments, it's gonna be silly hearing things like "Final Fantasy Seventeen" in a few years.
Nah, that's what makes the irony more funny with each passing number...
No more or less ironic than the 'World Series' and there's been quite a few of those...
That's why it bothers me when people say "Final Fantasy is ruined forever!!", since really, it isn't, they're trying (good) new things and making mistakes with them. 13 is really like it or hate it, but certainly not love it. 14 however, WAS a mistake, but at least they fired the development team and gave it a new one, so it's being adjusted and improved. That's exactly what I needed to hear. XDDD
Yeah, it's tough to say that the series is dead forever or to have any real lasting opinion of the series since, as a series, it's a loosely fit together jumble of different development teams' imaginations...It's really just barely a series at all when you get right down to it...Hell, it took them over 10 games to start making actual sequels of some of them!

General Discussion / Re: Secret of Mana Character Popularity Poll

I didn't really like any of the main characters in SD2. I blame stupid AI for half of it...SD3 was much better (heck, I think I liked Sword of Mana more than SD2).

Yeah, such a late VC entry seems to mean we can kiss any hopes of a 3DS remake goodbye...I hope they don't think a Wii port will sell more than the enhanced DS port did....
