I saw Thor again. It was just as epic, but I completely reversed my opinion once I got over my Norse myth biases: Odin is underwhelming (not something the god of ecstasy should be...) and Loki was awesome. They did make Loki more sympathetic than he traditionally deserves, but it is a convincing, organic direction to take the archetype, especially since we finally seem to be getting over Loki's resemblances to Lucifer. And whoever Loki's actor was -- he kicked. Raw, explosive, genuinely startling.

Odin, meanwhile, loses so much when he's not Loki's blood-brother. All of his tricksterishness, his savagery, his lust for wisdom-- those things that American Gods brings to light... Thor shows Odin's other side, I suppose, his kingly side, but that's so much less interesting to me. (I want a Odin-Thor-Loki heist movie. That would bring out the best and worst of all of them.)

AND ALSO: HBO is lining up six seasons of American Gods. I am so, so stoked.

(I think what I'm trying to say here is that I um, really really really love mythology.)

WHY do I not have cable.  WHY.  Oh, yeah...'cause I have no money.  :/

I finally read American Gods about two weeks ago and loved it.  Absolutely LOVED it.  Dear god (PUN INTENDED LAWLZ), it's probably the best book I've read in the last two or three years.  Oh Neil Gaiman...why are you such a genius?

Syna--I'm totally with you on the mythology.  I was an avid reader of mythology as a kid and I still love reading about it.  It's absolutely fascinating.  Norse, Egyptian, Celtic, Indian, and Russian mythology were my favourites.

(Apparently I thought that the Greek pantheon was too "mainstream" when I was 11.  8))

And so reading American Gods made it all that more enjoyable for me, being pretty familiar with mythology.

Though I wonder how they could make six seasons out of a book that's less than 500 pages.  Hmmm.

Set and Loki are my two favourite gods (and yeah, I know about the whole giant vs. god debate about Loki) of all time.  And I totally ship them.  They were MADE for each other.

Yes, I ship mythological deities.  I have reached the ultimate point of Super Nerd.

Chinese and Sumerian! 8D Don't forget Chinese and Sumerian!

Meh, but Horus kicked Seth's ass all over the place. Call me a conformist, but I kinda like "heroes of light" kinda peeps. Something tells me the conflict might have been a simple assassination, but I like to imagine the battle may have been like DBZ of FF7:AC style.  :o

Speakin of Gaiman, I kinda liked his new Doctor Who ep!

Idgaf, really.  Set kicked Osiris' ass, and people still like Osiris, so wutevz.  And everyone kicks everyone else's ass in mythology.  It's like one big drunken bar fight.  Besides, Set is a hybrid of an animal that no one's been able to figure out.  Everyone knows what a hawk is.  Horus is cool, but I do love me some Set.

And I almost always root for the bad guys.

Speaking of Egyptian mythology, I had the most AWESOME dream last night.  I'll have to share it in the dream thread at some point.  It was fantastic.  And it was one of those continuing dreams too.  I would wake up, go back to sleep, and the dream would continue.  As if my waking up was just a commercial.

It's so, so good! I have a lot of quibbles with the writing itself and plot structure and some of the portrayals, but I love the idea, and the atmosphere, and Shadow's identity, and and and.... well, it's amazing and Odin is SO goddamn amazing. (Wow, my ability to write has completely deteriorated in the face of my enthusiasm.)

You have most excellent taste; I love Norse, Egyptian, and Indian. :D You know, it's so weird, but my knowledge of Celtic myth is seriously deficient beyond faerie legends. I'm really influenced by Celtic myth since it's seeped into our culture to such a powerful degree-- I just don't know the specifics. Should get on that. If anyone knows a good place to start investigating, I'd be grateful!

Hahaha, I can see that. They do hog all the attention; the Greek pantheon honestly calls to me the most, but it's definitely the best-known. :D It's sort of hard to love Greek myth because of that, though, because the mainstream has such a shallow understanding of the Greek gods. These figures were alive in the imaginations of entire cultures for thousands of years. They're incredibly multifaceted and subtle and I'm always learning new things about them, but people don't seem to understand that. Most think Dionysos, for instance, is just the Party God, and while he is that, there's just so much more to him: from the Chthonic god to his relationship with the Eleusinian mysteries to his role as liberator and savior to his syncretization with Osiris. He's one of the most complex and compelling gods ever, and when I say Dionysos people picture a bulbous man on a donkey. Thanks Disney. Sigh. (Though for the record, I adore Fantasia.)

I recently became completely obsessed with Greco-Egyptian syncretism during the Ptolemaic reign. It's fascinating stuff; the combination added brilliant new dimensions to both pantheons. I wish historical periods could be fandoms-- I'd be all over Hellenistic Egypt.

Neil Gaiman is deeply involved in production, from what I hear, so I'm actually hoping they stray from the book. The whole time I read AG I was wanting other gods to show up! There are so many ways they can take the premise that I am totally at peace with the idea of them taking their sweet time to get to the end, as long as they do it well. I want Freyja and the Morrigan and Sekhmet to be there! I have faith! I believe!!

SET IS A RAGING BADASS! I am completely with you on this! His history is so fascinating-- how he reflected the cultural fears and anxieties of the Egyptians as the god of the desert; how foreign rule demonized him; his strange sexuality and the fact that nobody knows what the Set animal is; his relationship with the Osiris myth.

Since Set swings both ways and Loki, as a trickster, probably does as well -- especially given that whole "spent time as a woman and gave birth" thing-- I think shipping them is entirely appropriate. XD (Now I'm wondering who I would ship..)

Dude, don't even kid. He so did not (in some of the myths, lol). And anyway, Set is the only person Ra believes can kill Apep, the great demon and true embodiment of isfet/uncreation. I love the symbolism of that: Set, who seems to threaten ma'at constantly, is the one who slays Apep daily and maintains the source of all fertility and life, the Solar Barque. Those Egyptians knew a good metaphor when they saw one.

XD I guess people have their preferences.

But enjoy myself some world mythology too. Which reminds me, there's an interesting Japanese legend behind the mighty sword Kusanagi from the Kojiki chronicles which describes the battle between storm god Susanoo and the Eight-tailed Serpant. Eventually the sword, later in history, was used by this dude who decided to break through a ring of fire and conquer storms. If the name on that page sounds familiar to you, do know that there was an anime based on that.  :) And a fantastic (though inaccurate) one at that!

I'm not sure how much you know or want to know, but here's some suggestions:

1) You can start from the Mabinogion. It's got a great collection of stories, but the tales itself may have been morphed from book to book so you'll have to judge on your own. I began reading at Pwyll, Prince of Dyfed (which features the awesome Arawn, King of Faeries), so you may go at any order you like. 8)
2) What best than the legends and strife of the Tuatha De Danann?

Of course, this is only the surface of Celtic myths, but I'm sure you'll catch on after this.  8)

Today I stripped out all the electronics in my electric guitar, replaced all the stock pots with quality ones along with a new switch, added a kill-switch pot, soldered it all together and grounded it to the copper shielding I added the last time I worked on this guitar.

Now there's no background noise or interference, and I have a working killswitch.

(Wow, my ability to write has completely deteriorated in the face of my enthusiasm.)

I thought quite a bit of it was predictable and the end was too..."pleasant" for my taste (I was expecting something a lot more dark).  And there were SO many typos!  That's not Gaiman's fault but the English major / bibliophile in me was super irritated and distracted.  Although the book I read is a first edition, so it's unsurprising that there were typos.

But I agree, the idea and the atmosphere are fantastic.  I loved the dialogue and I LOVED Odin and I was fangirling like CRAZY over Mr. Ibis.  It didn't hurt that the majority of the book is set in or near the state that I live in.

I'm making my boyfriend read it at the moment.  I keep bothering him about it.  "Did you read today?"  "Oh, you should read!"  "Where are you in the book?"  Bwahahaha.

I admit that my understanding of Greek mythology is really shallow and pop-culture-ish (although I know enough about it to do major facepalming every ten minutes or so whenever I watch Disney's Hercules).

I think the thing that annoys me the most about Pop Culture Greek Mythology is Hades being the bad guy, the same way that a lot of movies portray Anubis as a bad guy.  Is it REALLY that difficult to envision a god associated with death or the underworld as benign or neutral?  It annoys me SO MUCH.  Are we really that fearful of death?!

Oh, and Fantasia is one of my favourite movies of all time.  You have good taste in mythology, literature, AND movies.  I like you.

I wish historical periods could be fandoms-- I'd be all over Hellenistic Egypt.

Dude.  Historical periods are totally fandoms.  Okay, well maybe I'm just in denial that there isn't a thriving French Revolution fandom...  I do consider it a fandom though.  That probably shows off my uber-nerdiness really well.

Neil Gaiman is deeply involved in production, from what I hear, so I'm actually hoping they stray from the book. The whole time I read AG I was wanting other gods to show up! I didn't even consider this, but now that you mention it YES.  THIS THIS THIS.

Weren't the Morrigan present at the battle, though?  The girl with Pict-ish (I have dubbed that a legit word) tattoos and wearing the crow's wing who talks to Easter?  Didn't she say she was a part of the Morrigan?

SET IS A RAGING BADASS! I am completely with you on this! His history is so fascinating-- how he reflected the cultural fears and anxieties of the Egyptians as the god of the desert; how foreign rule demonized him; his strange sexuality and the fact that nobody knows what the Set animal is; his relationship with the Osiris myth.

THANK YOU.  Set is SO overlooked.  Modern culture just clings to Anubis, for whatever reason, and pretty much ignores every single other Egyptian god.  I like Anubis but come ON, people.  He is not the only Egyptian god evar.

And Set is way cooler.

So who's ready for some Lunar Eclipse today?! :D

In Hindu Mythology (at least in some areas) they say that a Solar Eclipse is a gateway for demons to enter the material world. I wonder what they say about the moon turning red. *Looks it up*

Yesterday, Mom brought home a new cat. Its name is Muffin. It is orange and pudgy and does not want to leave me alone. It's like... 20 pounds of cat. On my lap. All the time. I... don't usually get this much love.

...  :)
