Chrono Compendium Discussion / "Myth 4: The music sucks!" ?
« on: June 02, 2011, 10:39:36 pm »
I'm reading this very good editorial : "Chrono Cross : The good, the bad and the fans". There is however a point that I cannot figure out : "Myth 4: The music sucks!"

I was wondering where this myth comes from. I always thought Chrono Cross was very well received in the music department. It won several "Best Music" awards back then.

The only upside to there being no Chrono sequel is that Square-Enix hasn't milked the series like the way they've milked the Final Fantasy series.

If Square-Enix did make another Chrono game, they would most likely keep releasing sequel after sequel, which would be bad.

The Chrono games need to be made with love and care, and I don't think that Square-Enix is capable of doing that right now.

Good point. For that reason, it might be a good idea for Square to sell the franchise, either to Monolith Soft or Obsidian (not sure about the later, but they seem motivated).

Not if Square can reunite a good chunk of the original team that would be another story.

Tanaka :  Hurry, we have a revolutionary MMO do make and no budget is left for Chrono ! Pack everything into text like Xenogears CD2 !

Kato : Huh... I still have 5 hours of quests... There's the second war between the dragons and chronopolis, the flashback about Porre and the fate of Crono and Marle, the part when Guile reveal his identity, and..

Kato : Ok fine, I work on Vana'diel lore next week. I'll go to the tavern and figure out something for crunching Chrono...

On the other hand it's also possible that Chrono Trigger DS just didn't sell enough copies to make it worth it to them. It sold...790,000 I believe, which sounds like a lot but really isn't, compared to best sellers like New Super Mario Bros.

We're talking about half of the original's sales. Isn't that good enough for a port with minimal changes ?

I must say, I wrote this topic after taking a second look on CE (youtube walkthrough) ! I know it has been said several times, but I'm really amazed by all the effort that was put into this hack. I think it would be great if it could at least pull a comment or two from one of the key people of the series. As Kyronea said, Square probably don't care about what happens outside of Japan, and I don't even know if Masato Kato or Hiromichi Tanaka can read english.

I'm kinda losing hope, especially about the IP focus anouncement that excludes chrono.

Anyone else desperate ?  It looks like Chrono is dead, at least in Square-Enix.

We've shown them that our fanbase is the strongest (CE, CT resurection, CT remake project...), we've bought their ports three times (maybe four times eventually considering PSN) as well as their toys. What else can we do ? Terrorism ?

I shouldn't buy it...

I have the snes cartridge, the psx remake and the DS remake.

...But I will probably buy it anyway !

General Discussion / Re: Secret of Mana Character Popularity Poll
« on: April 05, 2011, 02:08:02 am »
Don't get me wrong : I like SoM, however there aren't so many characters that I could call memorable, except for :

Neko, the merchant who always make a huge profit on your back
the Sprite, that magic stacking killing machine who made the difficulty a joke after the Tiger fight.

Rest was generic vilains and friendly NPCs.

KH is actually the only series I enjoy from Square right now. There are also... remakes of old games if that counts !

It's always great to see these interviews, but kinda depressing in a sense, because it reminds us that today chrono is a relic of the past that Square (in particular) doesn't care much about.

...What do you think is the threshold to receive a C&D letter from Square ? This question came to mind while playing the Epoch fangame. For example, if Chrono Cross was a fangame, could SquareEnix have sued the developers ? In this case no sprites were used, only story references and kid versions of CT's main cast.

If Crimson Echoes had the same sprites with different colors, a different interface and new graphic assets, would the C&D still be valid ?

Could I make a game set in the Chrono universe if no asset from the previous games are used ? Hmm...

If my memory is correct he was the guy in charge of Chrono Cross. It seemed he was stuck on FFXI and Square had no other team to spare on chrono. Now FFXIV bombed, his career isn't going so well and Square is probably wondering what to do with the guy now that he's out. What about reuniting the chrono cross team ? With a few antidepressants he could be back on his feet for a new chrono game.  :D

What do you think ?

2.5/5 is a bit too low considering what he wrote... I think.

There's a very bright chrono cross review my friend found recently. I think it's retrospective too. If you have patience, it's really worth your time. He describes well my mixed feelings about chrono cross. It's not just a review, more like a philosophical text about the game !

Here's the link : http://socksmakepeoplesexy.net/index.php?a=cross

Overall, Cross is a flawed game... But it has so much depth that you want to play it over and over again. And that's not necessarily the case for gems like Ocarina of Time.

Halo #1 ? Ok the game was really fun but it's not a timeless classic.
