Heh. Reminds me of a brief aside in some random SF novel*, about a scientist who created a bunch of robots who were supposed to make any human they encountered happy.
The robots eventually started killing every human they could find, on the grounds that, even if dead humans weren't exactly happy, they at least stopped complaining.
*Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or one of the sequels, maybe? I'm not sure if the idea would have been too dark for Douglas Adams or not. (Especially after the whale and the pot of petunias.)
