Gaspar the Haunter

Wow, the title of this topic sounds like a cool name of a fanfic or something.

Anyway, in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, there is a girl in Snowpoint City who trades you a Haunter with the nickname 'Gaspar'. I doubt it was Chrono Trigger-inspired, but there y'go.

I'd post a screenshot, but my camera sucks for that kind of thing.

In Christian mythology, Gaspar is the name commonly given to one of the Three Magi who visited Baby Jesus and made him Not Cry with their gifts of frankincense, myrrh, and other good stuff.

While it is possible that Pokemon derived the name from Chrono Trigger, I think it far more likely they took it from the original source instead.

Especially considering Gaspar was only his name in the North American version of Chrono Trigger, and Pokemon is a Japanese game.

His name is never mentioned in the Nr.1 Christian Source, though.

Maybe that's why he said Christian mythology?

I know, I just wanted to make clear that he doesn't mean this specific book, because people tend to believe these names have origin in it.

Perhaps! Would be interesting to see the chrono spirit live on like that.

Gaspar was such a great character and ultimatly underused I think, Gaspar in SSMB Brawl? Im just musing here.

Many Japanese games/animes have references to various Christian or otherwise religious traditions.

Like in Evangelion the main supercomputer system is named after the three Magi.
