General Discussion / Re: "Revitalizing Existing IPs" and other rumors...
« on: October 26, 2015, 02:24:39 am »
Since Chrono Cross is something of a train wreck where plot is concerned, not to mention the fact that the game is 16 years (and three console generations) old, I think it is far more likely that we will see a remake of one or both Chrono games instead of a direct sequel to the originals.  That would give the developers the flexibility they need to make the full story originally conceived by Masato Kato, and have it make sense.

Still, I don't expect this to happen anytime soon, nor should it.  Square-Enix has a lot on their plate right now, and it's in every fan's interest that these projects have full corporate support and not be degraded in quality because they were taking on too many projects.  We would want similar dedication and focus on Chrono if and when they decide to do it.

How well the Final Fantasy VII Remake does may determine whether Chrono comes back or not.  Doors might also open once development on Final Fantasy XV is finished, you never know.

I'm VERY afraid about how a retelling would take form... Since now games in general have far more adult thematics, and Chrono Trigger is a bit "innocent" at glance, it could be worse... or not (if CronoxLuccaxMarle have a chance to be best developed in that retelling :P )

I really don't think a retelling would stray too far from the epic fairy tale treatment of the original, since that is what made Chrono popular in the first place.  You don't have to worry about excessive language, gratuitous violence, or Game of Thrones-style sex and drama if that's what you're talking about.  Square-Enix wouldn't be looking for an "M" rating here.

Fan Fiction / Re: Hypothesis

For some reason, DeviantArt won't let me read it.  I tried turning off the mature content filter to no avail.  Is it mature-themed?

(Edit: Never mind.  It must have been a glitch.  And there's nothing in the story that should flag it as "mature".  Weird...)

In my opinion, Chrono Break would involve the breaking of a temporal causality loop.  I think this is a logical progression of the time-traveling/dimension-hopping themes we have seen.  Is a time-loop a good thing?  If you become aware of a time-loop, would you seek to preserve it - and become immortal, or would you seek to destroy it?  Who has the right to decide if a timeline created by a temporal causality loop should continue?

I think this is the best idea for a sequel, because it would create a plausible scenario in which the events of Chrono Trigger are repeated, and someone becomes aware that time is repeating.  We get a new take on the consequences of space-time manipulation, and everyone gets to see their favorite characters in action one more time, as opposed to creating a completely new cast and trying to figure out how to place them into the canon.

To increase the sense of urgency, the Chrono Trigger crew will have only one chance to break the time-loop if that is what they choose to do.  (Of course they would, because the original history doesn't end well for most of them.)  If they cannot change things before the events of Chrono Cross play out (the direct cause of the time-loop), then time will repeat itself forever, and they will be destined to fail over and over for eternity.  But if they succeed, they will have but one life to live, but they will free the future for all time.  The stakes cannot get any higher than that.

Being erased from the timeline is one way to get there, but an erased person cannot escape (under normal circumstances) from that dimension because that person cannot exist anywhere else.  He/she is only a possibility or a reflection of something that came before - such as a previous timeline.  Another way, I think, to get there is to have been erased from existence at some point and then been brought back to reality by outside intervention, meaning they can enter and depart at will under the right conditions.  A third way to enter the DBT probably involves being in an unstable timestream traveling between time-periods.  This third method is probably how Magus was able to enter the DBT, since he got thrown into an unstable timestream following his battle with Crono in the middle-ages, and he figured out how to duplicate the process later on.

All this being said, I don't think anyone can handle the DBT question decisively without the use of McGuffins.  It is a completely fictional state of being that confounds all existing logic, so we just have to kind of roll with whatever feels good.

As far as I know, there is no direct or indirect mention of Dalton's role in the present-era other than what was established in CTDS.  What I think is that Masato Kato had a good idea what Dalton's role in the world was supposed to be at the time Kato made Chrono Cross, but was unable to implement it in the game due to money and time constraints.

This is purely conjecture, but this is what I believe happened:  Dalton takes control of Poore sometime before 1005 and then launches an attack on Guardia Castle.  Dalton finds the Masamune sealed in the castle archives (left behind by Glenn in the middle-ages) and uses it to kill Queen Nadia.  This action curses the Masamune.  Crono, having no idea what has happened, flees with his infant daughter, Leena, during the confusion.  By the time that Crono learns of Marle's death, Dalton has already been killed by an enraged Lucca, who uses her powerful magic to obliterate Guardia Castle with Dalton still inside.  Lucca's attack causes severe damage to Truce, leaving many children orphaned, and she decides to take the children in as penance for her rash act of vengeance.  With Poore in control of Guardia, Crono goes into exile and changes his name, raising Leena in the remote fishing village of Arni in the El-Nido archipelago.

Obviously, the part about Leena isn't canon, but technically neither is anything else.  This is what I think the original idea was, and Kato was forced to reject it, only hinting at it years later in CTDS while not contradicting anything that was portrayed in Chrono Cross.

The canon is completely messed up on this subject.  If the creators had any idea how to address the Crono question, it was left on the cutting room floor due to budget and time constraints.  Personally, I am of the opinion that Miguel was originally supposed to be Crono, and that Leena was the daughter of him and Marle.  (There is indirect evidence of this.  Leena and Una don't look anything alike, so it's possible that Leena was adopted after Miguel's disappearance.  Leena's physical appearance also lends some credence to Crono and Marle being her parents, and her age - 16 - would be about right for someone born not long before the fall of Guardia in 1005.)   Obviously, this would have made for a much larger story, and one that was less Serge-centric.  The idea might have been rejected on that ground alone.  Kato wouldn't have wanted people to think that Leena was the story's protagonist just because she was a child of the previous story's protagonist.

There's no reason a story can't have multiple protagonists, but that was probably asking too much for a PS1-era game.  We can only wonder what might have happened had Chrono Cross had a bigger budget.  (Hint to Square-Enix: Remake Chrono Cross!)

I wouldn't be so dismissive of that article.  It's probably the best news Chrono fans have gotten in years.  Since Final Fantasy VII Remake is already in the works, and remakes/remasters in general are one of the most popular trends in the industry right now, I think a return of Chrono is not only likely, it is all but assured.  The only real question is what form a new Chrono will take.

General Discussion / Re: an open letter to SquareEnix

Letters like this really aren't helpful.  It makes Square-Enix that much more disinclined to listen to fans, even when they have something constructive to say.  This rant failed to even state what its goal was.

Try not to get down about the lack of a Chrono reveal.  The Final Fantasy VII remake is progress of a sort, and remember that S-E has a lot on their plate.  FF 15, Hitman, Deus Ex, Kingdom Hearts 3, Star Ocean, the ongoing FF 14, and now the new FF 7.

The way that Final Fantasy's XV and the new VII play and sell may have a direct impact on what a new Chrono game would look like.  Let's try and give them support and constructive feedback on these projects.  I, for one, still have hope.

General Discussion / Re: Chrono Trigger News incoming?

If it's any sort of hint/forshadowing... my hopes are high on this. And the reason is because of this thing:

http://www.hd.square-enix.com/eng/ir/library/docs/150512/page04.html

It talks about a recent change in their IP handling. The first point is about their pre-existing ones and possible future use. If it ends up applying to Chrono too, well, that wold be great!

Come to think of it, the third point could also apply, the collaboration one. Well, who knows.

This is very encouraging news.  I'm curious as to how Square-Enix intends to do things on both console and mobile at the same time.  Does that mean there will be unique mobile apps for each of their console releases?  Or does that mean they will be releasing standalone mobile products to coincide with a major console release?

It looks like they are finally going to do the long asked for Final Fantasy VII remake.  I couldn't be happier.  The fact that they are finally remaking a classic property means that a new or reimagined Chrono is a very real possibility.  Honestly, Chrono was probably the second most asked for property after FF7 in that survey Square-Enix did a while back, and that is not something the company will ignore.

If no true Chrono update or sequel is announced this year, there is always next year.  Remember that the current generation of consoles is likely to be a long one, like generation 7 was.  Personally, I think they might be thinking about something major for the 25th anniversary in 2020.  That would give them plenty of time to make the game we've always wanted.

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Re: Construction after 1999 AD.
« on: May 12, 2015, 02:55:24 am »
I wouldn't read too much into this.  The maps of the different eras look different mainly for the sake of being different.  The differences between the prehistoric era and later eras make sense due to continental drift.  The differences between 1000 A.D. and 2300 A.D. make no sense because 1,300 years isn't enough time for continental drift to be that noticeable.  Why should we take significant 300 year differences any more seriously?

Allow me to thank you guys as well.  There were some really thoughtful story elements in Crimson Echoes, and it was principally those things (along with numerous pieces of fan-art) that got me thinking about a serious piece of fan-fiction that reimagined Chrono Trigger.  Marle finally had a chance to shine as a character, and her having to choose between Cedric Guardia and Antaeus Poore was a golden moment in CE as well as overall Chrono lore.  The notion that Belthazar may not have had noble motives was also a great moment and brought a little more believability to the tale.

Your creation of Cedric Guardia, more than any other character, might be your greatest contribution to the Chrono Universe.  With him, you give us a whole new time period to explore that doesn't feel arbitrary or tacked on.  The Kingdom of Guardia has endured for a thousand years, so the story of its founding must be a story worth telling.  Hopefully, I can bring further justice to that tale at some point in the future.

Again, thank you for all you have done.  Crimson Echoes set a chain of events into motion that we cannot yet see the end of, but that end just might be something special.

These things happen in cycles.  It's a reflection of the two-party system really not knowing how to fix the problems of the country, so the party holding the White House historically gets burned in midterms.  Then the opposing party wins the following presidential election only to find their own congressional majority crushed a few years later, and the cycle repeats.  It happened to Clinton, then to Bush 43, and now to Obama.  One wonders how many more times the American people will put up with this nonsense before they get smart and run both parties out of Washington.
