I can't stop listening to the song
"Stopwatch Hearts" by Delerium/Emily Haines. By association, I'm really getting into a concept I like to call "deconstruction," where you try to figure out the underlying factors behind why something appeals to you -- and taking apart cultural artifacts in general, to better understand them and their effect on oneself. There's probably some official theory on this sort of thing, if I had the time to research psychology and sociology literature.
"Stopwatch Hearts" seems to me to be about a prostitute reverse-objectivizing the rich men she services; that she relishes in the misfortune of these men probably appeals to my inherent disgust for overconcentration of wealth in the hands of a few; and the not-so-slight misandry that inhabits me whenever I think about the sexual exploitation industries in general.
Kind of creepy when you start to think about these things, really. I wonder if I would have liked this song half as much if I hadn't heard about the $700,000 paychecks for rank-and-file Goldman Sachs workers this week and posted a multi-page tirade against pornography a few weeks back.
