Z, stop raging. Everyone else agreed it was funny, and I doubt it hurt anyone's education considering all of the legit information was left in place, and I'm willing to bet not a single person is planning on doing a paper on Jacques Tits this very night and on top of that, using Wikipedia as a source, which is sacrilege in terms of educational writing. Don't get me wrong, I'm against vandalizing/deleting entire pages of actual important information just as much as the next guy, but I think you're really overreacting to something so harmless.

That's like rationalizing moving a brick out of place on some huge monument. Maybe no one will notice it, but it's still vandalism and destruction, only to a tiny degree. It's wrong in principle and unethical, and the vandalism of that article still had to be fixed by someone. I guess it's going to be a real division in our generation—those of us who troll for the lulz and those of us who refrain.

How are these two things comparable at all? Writing "LOL TITS" on an already unintentionally hilarious page that, in the end, serves really no purpose unless someone really needs to find out about Jacque Tits outside the realm of school studies, and on top of that leaving all of the actual information in tact, and bringing laughter to other people is in no way the same as taking a small brick from a monument, because:

A - It causes structural damage (which my actions did not cause)
B - Requires money to fix (which my actions did not include)
C - Defaces a monument, something admired and known by everyone (The several paragraph long wikipedia article of Jacque Tits, totally monumental)

Again, you are incredibly overreacting to this. Calm down.

It requires time to fix, and you'd be surprised to know that people probably did see it on the article while browsing. Wikipedia is the 7th most active website on the Internet, and it's not used solely by soccer fans looking at the Pele article. But even in principle, it's just a bad thing to do.

It requires twelve seconds to go on to the edit page and erase it. If it's that much of a hassle, I'll gladly do it for you. And again, I know Wikipedia is a popular source for information, coming from someone who refers to it often, but you have to take into account the obscurity of the page I wrote on. I highly doubt that anyone who went on that page tonight, since I made the edit, wasn't someone I had linked to.

And in principle, how is it bad? It was all in good fun, no harm was made to anybody. I'm sure Jacques Tits himself would have found it amusing.

The name Tits is funny, but vandalizing an article like that is not. Now, if you had contacted the person who wrote this article and got their permission to do this, then it would have been better, especially since it would have given him the chance to make sure he had everything backed up so he could restore it after it had run the course.
Doesn't wikipedia have very stringent content guidelines? Would this article be deleted if some higher up found it before the author could correct it?

You don't ask permission for a prank, that's the point of it. I see where you're coming from, but at the end of the day all it was two harmless words tagged to the bottom of an obscure article that are easily deleted. No, the article wouldn't have been deleted, it would have just been fixed, and no harm would have been done at all. I fail to see why this is such a huge thing.
