Welcome / Birthday / Seeya! Forum / Life goes on.
« on: November 06, 2010, 04:09:40 am »
Just stopping by out of an instance of nostalgia. Not sure if I'll stay here very long. I miss the hustle and bustle that this site once had, but the wave had to crash some time, I suppose. Life is stereotypical like that.

General Discussion / Making the switch.
« on: March 09, 2009, 11:35:42 pm »
I'm making the move from Vista to Ubuntu 8.10; Vista has just lost it's appeal. There are a few reasons why I've decided to move: I don't play too many PC games (with emulation being the only exception), so I don't need the most up-to-date video drivers; for every emulator I use Windows-side, there is a Linux equivalent; what applications I do use that are Windows-only (Photoshop, Winamp, etc.) can easily be run through Wine; and generally I feel I've gotten complacent with Windows by not being forced to learn enough -- I realize Ubuntu isn't the best distro to this end, but still...

So, what are your thoughts? Any advice as I make the move?

General Discussion / Need help with Terranigma code...
« on: July 15, 2008, 01:32:17 am »
So anyways, I've been playing around with the mechanics in Terranigma and I've hit a roadblock. I successfully created a permanent Zap Ring effect code(7E066C 10; I'm not sure, but I think one has to have a ZapRing in their inventory for it to work); the only problems I run into are(save *):

*: Using this code after a 'legitimate' Zap Ring use allows infinite use w/proper palette and graphics on the current screen.

A: Using this code without a 'legitimate' Zap Ring use allows infinite use w/wrong palette and graphics.

B: "*", however, after leaving the current screen in a level, the palette(mostly black, part of it is right, though) gets screwed up.

C: "*", however, after leaving the level then reentering, the palette(level dependent) and graphics pointer(shows garbled text in place of the Zap animation)

I'd imagine one would be able to fix this problem with breakpoint tracking, but I haven't the faintest clue as to where to start. Anyways, I would be grateful if anyone could help me with this one, because I've been stuck on it for a couple of days...

For those who haven't set up a personality profile, you can go here.(requires basic registration─username, password, email... you know the drill.)

For those who have set up a personality profile, feel free to post them here in this topic.

The synopsis page for personalities is here.

For example: I, myself, am naturally an Originator, but since my Extroverted/Introverted and Judging/Perceiving are, for all intents and purposes, 'balanced' I can behave in any Intellectual(NT) style depending on the situation.

General Discussion / D&D thread: What alignment are you?
« on: June 11, 2008, 01:45:32 am »
I was just curious what alignments the local Compendium populace holds(don't be afraid to put evil, no ones judging.) For those who are not familiar with the D&D alignment systems, check these two links to find out:
Definitions
Quiz

I, myself, hold a True Neutral alignment with good and/or chaotic tendencies.

A few predictions:
ZeaLity: True Neutral
Lord J esq.:Lawful Neutral
V_Translanka: Lawful Evil
Thought: Neutral Good
Faustwolf: Neutral Good(Lawful Tendencies)
Nightmare975: Chaotic Neutral
x_XTactX_x: Chaotic Good
There are a few others, but I'm not quite sure of them just yet...

So post your alignment and a little synopsis.

Edit: added personal tendencies.

Time, Space, and Dimensions / Thoughts on the Time Crash...
« on: March 14, 2008, 05:30:07 pm »
So, anyways, I was pondering why the Time Crash occured and trying to put together an explicit (e.g. from CT & CC) explanation of why the Time Crash occurred. So here are my thoughts (forgive me if they are a little disorganized, I'm just trying to get them down.): The time crashed had occurred when chronopolis was shunted to 12000 B.C.. Was it mentioned where, spatially, it was. My theory states that chronopolis was controlled by the frozen flame (as supported by the compendium:
Lavos's temporal powers have been established; he was probably able to effect the movement of the Sea of Eden through time with the aid of the Frozen Flame, which served as the power source for the time research facility.
) and was sent to when and where Crono and co. first arrived in 12000 B.C. canceling their arrival via anti-annihilation energy. In other words: they disappear -- they do not go to the DBT -- they do not kill Lavos -- they do not pass go -- and they most certainly do not collect $200 dollars either -- they disappear. Well, wait a minute!  That would violate the property of the Emergence Preservation Corollary (as stated in here.) . So, bluntly, the Time Crash probably happened because A) The Emergence Preservation Corollary *must* be preserved and B) A new timeline *must* be created due to changes wrought by Lavos. So a new dimension was created where Crono and co. never defeated Lavos; and neither of the dimensions could be shunted off to the DBT because they fit the prerequisites' antitheses. If I am right here that pushes me to the next question: "Why would Belthazar purposely do this!?" (He did -- as he orchestrated everything from the Frozen Flame experiment to Project Kid.) The answer, simply, to save Schala from Lavos. O.K. thats all fine and dandy, but how does he propose to clean up the situation. The answer: he motivated and observed Crono & co. fighting Lavos to see if it was truly possible to kill a temporal anomaly such as Lavos. They could -- so he set up the plans for Project Kid, the Frozen Flame experiment, and other miscellaneous details needed to fulfill his plan, and set them in motion to save Serge, a "missing piece" that was the only existence able to resolve the dimensional crisis at hand. He then aided and motivated Serge to clean up his(Belthazar's) mess and tie up loose ends, so that "*everyone* can have their cake *and* eat it too". But that still doesn't explain why Belthazar would be so sure in doing this. Knowing Belthazar's behavior he wouldn't throw dice, as it were -- he knew what Lavos, through the Frozen Flame, would do; specifically protect his(Lavos' existence by *annihilating* Crono and co.s'. This event put Belthazar(in Chronopolis) at the time of Schala where he discovered she was shunted into the future. He then found Schala(Kid) turned into a child by the Frozen Flame at 1000+ A.D.(I'm not sure but I think Kid, her name, was a developer pun off of the fact that she was turned into a child. This situation is elaborated on in RD-A Bittersweet Resolution -- or here.) and made sure that child was to be found and taken care of by Lucca until Lynx(FATE) would murder Lucca and set in motion the events of CC.

This is just an attempt to explain why the Time Crash occurred, so critique would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.  :)

Polling / Who do you think should be the 8th character?
« on: March 09, 2008, 09:06:10 pm »
So anyways; I was curious what the Compendium's opinion on who the 8th character slot should be filled with. For those who don't know, and new members, the 8th character hack was a project undertaken back in April 2007 by justin3009, TheOutlaw, Vehek, JLukas, and Mauron. Right now it's being as a technical thread, so you can see what's been completed so far. Just don't spam the thread with stupid, unproductive things such as: "Dude, when's this thing gonna be done!?", okay.

For the record: I think it would be cool if Slash was in the party.

Okay, first of all, a disclaimer, some would say having a snes ROM (A.K.A. Read-Only-Memory. It's basically the data on the snes cart or game itself.), or any rom or iso, without owning the respective game cart, is illegal (The textbook argument.) or at least gray in the eyes of the law (The abandonware argument.). (Oh! And don't go thinking the FBI is watching your every move, unless you are doing some *serious* torrent uploading, they have better things to do with their time, so don't be paranoid!
Moving on, you'll need a program called an Emulator. (It basically interprets the game as the real system would, allowing you to play the games on your computer.) For this post I'm assuming you're running windows so I'd recommend zsnes. (user friendly, has an easy-to-use built-in cheat engine, and doesn't use much system resources.)

In order to setup zsnes you should read the following guide (start at "Basic Usage"): http://zsnes-docs.sourceforge.net/html/readme.htm

Next I'm going to recommend you get a Gamepad. (It is a peripheral device, otherwise known as a controller, that allows you to control your game with the controller instead of a keyboard, which is used by default.) The Logitech Dual Action 2 or Rumblepad 2 are the best, in my opinion. I just embeded those links to show you the prices of each. (and trust they're worth the price, it beats playing with the keyboard, and you'll avoid nasty limitations that the keyboard imposes. (for example. )

Finally you're going to need roms for your emulator. (most people would send you to google so don't go asking for roms in the chrono compendium forums, zsnes forums or any other forums for that matter, it's poor etiquete and you should rather be talking about such things over PM, anyways.
If you have a question about a bug in a specific game search through the Zsnes Forum's FAQ or Verified Bugs sections thoroughly before asking any questions in the other forums, unless you're running a hack then you're going to want to go to the hack creator's page But before you go to any of those areas, check to see if you're running the latest zsnes (v1.51 as of this post) and if your original rom has a good checksum using NSRT and maybe a savestate of the 'problem' in question, before you send in a bug report. Anyways back on track...)
There are a couple of good sites to start you're search: (I'm not going to link you to the sites in an open forum, but rather show you where they are via PM. I will also assume you own the actual games corresponding to the roms you are seeking in an attempt to indemnify myself against any *potential* legal issues.)
Between these two sites they have nearly *every* rom you'll ever want or need. Otherwise Google is your friend here.

http://PM me for info/dl.php?name=Super_Nintendo

Okay, so you have a file (***.zip|.rar|.7z|...) that needs to be uncompressed or extracted, as it's also known, (If you have downloaded a .smc|.sfc|.swc|.fig file it is already uncopressed and you are ready to go! :) ) you're going to want to download 7-zip. Just install (run) the program and keep pressing next/finish until you're done. (no specific settings are needed) Find the file that you downloaded (ex. chronotrigger.zip, or .rar, or .7z) and right click on it goto 7zip->Extract Here. You now should have the uncompressed rom, ready for use. Consult the aforementioned Zsnes guide for instructions on how to use the file from here.

----Assuming you've figured everything out to this point, let's move on...----

So you've been intrigued by some cool hacks that have been developed (Shameless Compendium Plugs: Chrono Trigger Retranslation | Chrono Trigger: Prophet's Guile | Chrono Trigger+) here or elsewhere and you would like to play them. There are two methods of doing this, both have their advantages.

--Method 1 >>Soft-Patching (Recommended Method)
Soft-Patching is a feature in Zsnes and a few other emulators that allows you to only have to drop the patch (.ips file) in the same directory as the roms. When the rom is loaded to RAM (Random-Access-Memory, basically the memory that reads *and* writes) the patch is automatically appended to the rom loaded in memory or ram, allowing you play the "patched rom without actually patching the rom itself.

--Method 2 >>Hard-Patching
Hard-Patching requires you to use a program such as Lunar IPS or Snestool, neither you have to install :), in order to patch or append the rom itself, permanently altering the rom. (unless an anti-patch is provided) Exact instructions as to how to use the programs are located in the readme files provided with each respective program. (No point in plagiarizing the readme files if they're readily available.)

General Discussion / Top 10 Video Games
« on: February 19, 2008, 11:47:04 pm »
What is your top ten video games of all time?

List the top 10 video games that you have played and for what reason have each of these games ended up on the list.

Mine, for example, would be:

1. Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross (Neither are really prequels/sequels as such, but rather they are both entwined, kind of as if they were pieces of the same game.): The plot, open ended questions left, and the music scores landed this one at number one.
2. Xenogears: Awesome plot, innovative 2-D 3-D combination system, great music.
3. Star Ocean: the second story: the gameplay, graphics, open-ended mechanics, plot, and obviously the music.
4. Final Fantasy Tactics: Gameplay, Gameplay, Gameplay (I kept playing this on the same savegame for months, something like 300+ hours, just hacking characters into the game and pitting them against each other.), Oh and of course the music and graphics, truly an addictive game.
5. Planescape: Torment: Truly an innovative plot, music, although repetitive, doesn't get annoying and sets the plot up well.
6. Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis and Let Us Cling Together (Different Plots, directly connected): Involving plots, battles require much thought, although it gets easier don't expect it to get easy, music is original and involving.
7. Tales of Phantasia (Dejap Translation): Story is mature in some spot, which is good as it add to the comic relief of the game, innovative battle system, good graphics, very good music for the system.
8. Seiken Densetsu 3: Action Battle system that involved way more thought than the previous game, humerous in spots, good graphics, good music.
9. Rudra no Hihou: if you haven't played this gem for the snes, PLAY IT NOW!; 3 entwining scenarios and one cumulative one make this game seem like you're playing a saga frontier game, you get to make your own spells via a text system, kind of like a hero name system, easily the BEST, in my opinion, graphics on the snes (except the spell effects, *some* of which suck.), and nice mood-appropriate music.
10. Treasure Hunter G: a neat little, not-so-well-known, rpg for the snes; it sports an innovative tactics battle system, pre-rendered 3-D characters (pretty bold to do, in my opinion), and other graphics are well done and integrated into the game.
