Disney Create Paradoxes
« on: August 24, 2006, 03:28:48 pm »
It's a well known fact that mermen and mermaids are fish. However, a certain mermaid called Ariel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Kingdom_Hearts_Ariel.jpg, has both a navel and breasts. A navel is a scar formed by the cutting of the umblical cord, and only mammles are connected to their mothers by umblical cords, and breasts are mammle-reserved organs. So, if we put aside the fact Disney wanted to make Ariel more recognizable to viewers, how should I see this? Stupidity? Carelessness? Or maybe they define mermaids in a different way?

Maybe mermaids are considered more to be sea mammals, like dolphins or whales? They lack gills too, and the lack of going to surface for air could simply be ignorance or lack of detail to attention. It would explain the umbilical cord, the mammary glands, and the hair.

Or maybe the producer of ariel had her have big breasts is because he was a lonely man and never even got to have any women, now that is what you call a sick dog!!!

Well, since we are talking about Disney and not the Chrono series, I'm just gonna take one for the team and chalk it up to plot convenience. Besides, this is a children's movie, and considering the fact that most movies of the genre are specially designed with a certain set of morals in mind to teach their viewers, the main character(s) should relate enough to the children for their lessons to be adopted. After all, you don't watch 101 Dalmations and analyze how dogs have the ability to talk, much less hitchhike halfway across England to rescue almost a hundred kidnapped puppies. (I'm talking about the animated version, by the way, not the CG/real-life one. That version just sucks.)

And in light of age-old evidence, most anyone with a good eye has caught how the Disney movies always have sexual innuendoes hidden throughout their films, as evidenced by the notorious Lion King scene with a certain word formed by the dust that the adult Simba stirs up (among other things). Hell, my AP Biology class watched half our collective library of Disney movies last year after the exams, simply to find whatever animator deviance we could dig up. And believe you me, we found a lot.

IIRC, the Little Mermaid contains a priest who is visibly overly excited during the marriage ceremony.

Obviously they omit some facts to make it more appealing to the kids & most of them wouldn't notice it anyway.

I'll bet crabs don't conduct royal underwater orchestras, either. Looks like The Little Mermaid should have done some fact-checking.

They don't!?  :(

You've just ruined my entire view of marine life, J.

It always looked his knee to me. Disney was always blamed for their movies having porn in their movies. Except for 'Who framed Roger Rabbit', where they DID cut a porn pic.

Little Mermaid was book, first and foremost. Oh, and mermaids and mermen are it's own race. Why would they be only fish?

If my memory is right, I didn't recall any mermen in the book.

Nonetheless, there were. If he'd actually read the story, we could have prevented this unnecessary digression. He wouldn't even have had to read the entire story. The "Sea King" is first mentioned in the second sentence. I double-checked to be sure.
