A little confused how Music Transition works

I don't really understand how the music transition works...What are each of the layers for?  And how does it work to change the music?  Can anyone shed any light on this?

Each layer corresponds to a different song. In the Overworld Events, there are a few commands that specify what song is to be played in what layer. For instance, Layer 1 could be Peaceful Days, etc. you can catch the events in question by just searching for song names.
