What if thread: Chrono Trigger PC?
« on: February 18, 2009, 12:10:44 am »
Just in theory:   In an alternate timeline similar to ours but they made Chrono Trigger for the PC also what do you think the differences will be compared to OTL? (Our Time Line)      In the alternate timeline Nintendo and Square never broke up.

I imagine there would've been updated graphics (not like they are bad anyways) and use realistic instruments instead of the SNES synth.         I also think there would've been downloadable content from the early days of the IE just to make the game stand out from it's console brother.

Windows 95 was released in 1995. So, I think it would be hard for Square to develop it at the same time. (Unless you meant they decide to make an improved version for the PC later.)
I also don't know if there'd be realistic instruments because of the music formats used at the time.

Nintendo and Square were never broken up, because Square gives lovin' to every company. They worked more with Sony during the PSX/N64 era due to the PSX having better graphical capabilities, but they still worked with Nintendo on a few projects. Now, theyr'e back to working with everyone evenly, spawning many beautiful games lately, including Chrono Trigger DS.

And considering that MMOs weren't strong yet then, downloadable content is a bit much for Windows 95.

Can you name 5 games Square did with Ninny at that time? I can't...I'm even pretty sure there were none.

Well Some of Square first game, like Final Fantasy, were for personal computer.  In 1995 there were some realistic sound emulation but not in popular use, most games used Midi's still. N64 trups the PSX in every way except storage capacity and sound quality, I think it was the latter the hooked Square if I recall.

I thought what hooked them was what hooked everyone else: FMVs.

FMVs...why is that exclusive to PSX and not the N64? It could be done on almost any platform, it's just a pre-rendered video and a cartage doesn't effect that at all.

Then why weren't they doing it...? It must have at least been easier to do with the PSX...or, like you said, they could store more on it...

Yep as I said the only problem with the N64 was sound and storage. FMVs, music, visuals all of them are HUGE when compared to data for the game. Right now if SNES quality game came out for he 360 or PS3 the game would be truly epic in size and detail just due to raw amount of space.

Maybe if CT was ported to DOS, it would use CD medium like Alone in the Dark series?

Ding ding ding. The N64 was no less graphically capable than the PS1. If anything, it was more powerful. It was just limited to 64mb cartridges, where as PS1 games could have a series of 650mb CDs. Plenty of room for prerendered cutscenes.

So they didn't have digitalized sound much in 95?      Do you think it would have been as good as the artist bLiNd who does his stuff?  I imagine his songs being used in CT PC.

I also think their might have been a full 3d view of Chrono Trigger just to make it stand apart from the home console but with pre-rendered scenes.

What happend to my thread?  Is it something I said.           :o :picardno
