Weird word in graphics packet?

I was editing a graphic packet, and while looking for the packet I saw some strange looking....letters?  I'm pretty sure I haven't added these and I dont know where they would be in the game?  It looks like it says

PONTPO

does that mean something in japanese?  I'll attach the pic....maybe it's a little easter egg from the developers?

I don't recognize any of that stuff besides the time stamps...could it be something someone put on your ROM (have you tried with others?) or something...?

The birds can be seen flying all over the world map.

There's the Epoch (half of it because the graphics are mirrored), birds, shadows for the Epoch/Dactyls, and the smileys are placeholders that appear quite frequently in tilesets. No idea as for PONTPO though... Is it from the original CT ROM? It looks like something someone wrote with a mouse.

I'm 90% sure i took this from a fresh rom?  I can double check when I get home today.  I do agree it looks like a mouse did it.

Yes, it's from the original CT rom.  It's always there and I wondered what it was as well.  It's pretty much just a place holder.

What about compared to the Japanese ROM...?

Same thing in the final JP.  (05DA11)

Edit: Slight difference.  The left end of 600 AD is cut off, but the right end of 2300 AD is present in the JP Final.  It's reverse for American.
