Hero's Curse
by "UnfortunateBOB"

Location:
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
When the party arrives in the Kingdom of Zeal, they learn that the Enlightened Ones spend much of their time sleeping. Dreaming is a very important aspect in their way of life and philosophy. After MasaMune's big sister (is her name Dora? I forgot) disappears, you'll have to find her hidden sprite once more in the area before you begin the quest.

Plot:
ŻŻŻŻ
So you find her somehow (sorry to not have any complex gameplay details here) and she invites you to dream. If Frog is in your party, she will single him out sensing that he's been affected by magic from Zeal. Everyone goes to sleep. Fade to black and such. Frog wakes up in a small hut in a forest, but he is not Frog. He's a young Glenn. A girl walks into the hut and tells him that Cyrus is waiting for you on the foothills by the edge of the forest. You must walk through the natural maze and meet Cyrus, who is talking to Masa and Mune. Dora enters Frog's dream and pauses it for him. She questions Glenn's interaction with her brothers but is interrupted by a Ozzie and Magus. You see the scene again as Cyrus burns away. But this time, when Magus hits you with the transformation spell, Dora pauses the dream yet again to inquire about Magus's powers. When she resumes, she, Magus, Ozzie, and Cyrus are gone. You're not a frog yet. The only exit is through the cave above you... which contains a psychedelic monster that symbolizes your curse. Fight it. Kill it. Purify yourself.

Enemies:
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
Imp, Roly, Nu.

Bosses:
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
Curse (500hp/2000mp)
No attack.
No defense.
One unique skill that drains Glenn's hp slowly. When your hp reaches zero, you die and "wake up" from the dream.

Items:
ŻŻŻŻŻŻ
Wooden Sword, Bandana, Hide Tunic, Hide cap

Rewards:
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
If you destroy the curse within yourself, you wake up as Glenn, and are able to continue the rest of the game as glenn. Very little plot variations.

If you fail to destroy the curse, you wake up as Frog and continue the rest of the game as Frog.

*sigh... I made my friend wait as i typed this lol. I'm so outgrowing gamefaqs.

I was over at Gamefaqs recently and saw this question:

Describe an additional end of game subquest, or a replacement for a current one.

Location
Plot
Enemies
Bosses
Story
Items

ALL OF THE GOOD STUFF!

Seemed like it could be fun, or provoke a decent discussion.  So I thought I would copy the first three answers over to this board, to see if anyone's interested.

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / CT- Nu in the Hunting Range
« on: December 07, 2005, 12:07:55 am »
There's at least 3:
1.  Northeast corner, on the lower level
2.  Southeast corner, on the upper level
3.  Northwest corner, on the lower level

I'm guessing you don't know about #3, as most people don't go to the far left side of the Hunting Range since it's kind of a maze and none of the "regular" hunting range enemies can be found over there.

Chrono Compendium Discussion / Relative magic strengths

Ugh, I've gotta remember that clearing the cookie cache gets rid of auto-login...

I should also note that, in most cases, you can multiply the damage done by each tech by 1.5 if you equip the involved characters all with PrismSpecs.  This is obviously not the case for the 5 triple techs requiring Rocks, however...

Chrono Compendium Discussion / Relative magic strengths
« on: December 03, 2005, 06:35:47 pm »
This may not be particularly useful information, but I found in interesting if nothing else.

I've spent the last few hours observing the amount of damage each magic attack will do against the same group of enemies--those enemies not having any inherent strengths/weaknesses against a particular type of magic.

Here are the results, from highest to lowest.  To simplify things, the rankings of each are weighted, from lowest (1) to highest (76).  The spell with the rating of 76 causes approximately 76x as much damage as the one with a rating of 1.

This is against ONE ENEMY with no weaknesses/strengths against magic, and with ALL STATS for ALL CHARACTERS maxxed out (magic **, power **, and HP 1 where applicable).

DoublevBomb (Lucca+Robo): 76
Grand Dream (Marle+Frog+Robo; Gold Rock): 48
Frog Flare (Frog+Lucca): 34
Final Kick (Crono+Marle+Ayla): 29
Gatling Kick (Crono+Lucca+Ayla): 29
Fire Tackle (Lucca+Robo): 27
Ice Tackle (Marle+Robo): 26
Blaze Kick (Lucca+Ayla): 26
Cube Toss (Marle+Ayla): 22
Twister (Crono+Robo+Ayla): 18
Arc Impulse (Crono+Marle+Frog): 18
Ice Toss (Marle+Ayla): 17
Fire Punch (Lucca+Robo): 16
OmegaFlare (Magus+Lucca+Robo; Blue Rock): 16
Super Volt (Crono+Robo): 14
DarkEternal (Magus+Marle+Lucca; Black Rock): 13
Fire Sword 2 (Crono+Lucca): 13
Ice Sword 2 (Crono+Marle): 13
Fire Whirl (Crono+Lucca): 13
Flame Kick (Lucca+Ayla): 11
Antipode 3 (Marle+Lucca): 11
Spire (Crono+Frog): 11
Red Pin (Lucca+Frog): 10
Fire Sword (Crono+Lucca): 10
Ice Sword (Crono+Marle): 10
SwordStream (Crono+Frog): 9
Shock (Robo): 9
Delta Storm (Crono+Lucca+Frog): 8
Delta Force (Crono+Marle+Lucca): 8
Fire Zone (Crono+Lucca+Robo): 8
Luminaire (Crono): 8
Area Bomb (Robo): 7
Glacier (Marle+Frog): 7
Antipode 2 (Marle+Lucca): 7
Flare (Lucca): 7
PoyozoDance (Marle+Lucca+Ayla): 6
Tail Spin (Ayla): 6
DarkMatter (Magus): 6
Line Bomb (Lucca+Frog): 5
Mega Bomb (Lucca): 5
Fire Whirl (Crono+Lucca): 5
Dark Bomb (Magus): 4
Dark Mist (Magus): 4
Max Cyclone (Crono+Robo): 4
Rocket Roll (Crono+Robo): 4
Ice Water (Marle+Frog): 3
Antipode (Marle+Lucca): 3
Ice 2 (Magus): 3
Lightning2 (Magus): 3
Fire 2 (Magus): 3
Laser Spin (Robo): 2
Fire 2 (Lucca): 2
Water 2 (Frog): 2
Lightning 2 (Crono): 2
Ice 2 (Marle): 2
Lightning (Crono): 2
Napalm (Lucca): 2
Water (Frog): 2
Ice (Marle): 2
Fire (Lucca): 2
Slash (Crono): 2
Flame Toss (Lucca): 1

(By the way, these were tested against Spekkio's Nu form. To find out about how much HP damage each attack did, multiply their rating by 177. That is, except for a few such as DoublevBomb, which I had to extrapolate from other battles because they couldn't hit Spekkio.)

All techs that aren't listed are either physical attacks or healing/defense, so they have a rating of 0 for this. Those techs are:
3D Attack, Aura Beam, Aura Whirl, Beast Toss, Black Hole, Blade Toss, Boogie, Bubble Hit, Bubble Snap, Cat Attack, Charm, Confuse, Cure, Cure 2, Cure Beam, Cure Touch, Cure Wave, Cyclone, Dino Tail, Double Cure, Drill Kick, Drop Kick, Falcon Hit, Frog Squash, Haste, Heal, Heal Beam, Hypno Wave, Kiss, Leap Slash, Life, Life 2, Life Line, Magic Wall, Protect, Provoke, Robo Tackle, Rock Throw, RocketPunch, Rollo Kick, Slurp, Slurp Cut, Slurp Kiss, Spin Kick, Spin Strike, Spincut, Triple Kick, Triple Raid, Twin Charm, Uzi Punch, Volt Bite, and X Strike.

Whew, that's a lot of info...

Just a quick correction on what RyogaMasaki says above:

The game will indeed freeze at the "Exchange this world for..." line if there are not three active characters in your party.  However, none of the three characters need be Frog for the code to execute properly.  For example the particular trick I used above had Magus, Lucca, and Marle as the active party.  Frog's lines are executed just as if he were actually there, complete with the Masamune sound effects.

Incidentally, that's why the 7e2981 & 732982 codes can't be activated until the line "Frog: Magus!!" appears.

My apologies then...looks like someone else is way ahead.

Had I found some of these resources it would've taken much less time to pull this off.  Unfortunately I didn't--and after 2 hours of searching on the Internet I had assumed the info wasn't available.

Anyways, the offsets guide that you link to here on the Compendium did make this possible, and without it I wouldn't have been able to:
(1) Change the storyline counter to the proper point, at least as quickly as I did
(2) Discover the position of the RAM that affects 2nd and 3rd character positions.  I discovered on my own that "EE" = empty slot though it looks like that info might've been available after all.

Anyway, thanks for pointing this out, and I'll make sure next time I do something like this, it truly is unique.

*grumbles about 2 hours of research not being enough*

You're thinking too small--I wanted to discover a solution that works on carts as well.  Believe it or not, I play CT on the SNES.  And yes, this procedure does work on it.

I doubt very much that anyone with "even a basic understanding of savestate and RAM modification could do this."  Two reasons: first, people have been trying a LONG time to make it possible.  I found five topics on Magus vs. Magus amongst the seven CT boards I checked, including this one--and no one, anywhere, has made public a way to do this.  The info simply isn't available.  Maybe this HAS been done before, but it hasn't been made public.  Second, this wasn't possible until the position of the storyline counter in the RAM was discovered and deciphered--and that's been a relatively recent development.

And even if all of you think that doing this was a waste of time, consider: I had to customize and test three additional codes of my own to make this possible, which took nearly 3 hours.  And if nothing else, the final two codes I've listed above affect how many people are in your party at once.  This is something that no one's discovered how to do until now.  You won't have to use the "Lucca/Red Gate/Walk Thru Walls" trick recorded on this website anymore to affect this.  So if you all want to diss my work, at least recognize it had some utility.

I find it amusing that as soon as someone does something like this, everyone else simultaneously talks about how it's not a worthwhile accomplishment and brags about how they could have done it.  Several people on this board seem to have stuck in their heads the idea that just because they've been visiting the Chrono Compendium for a while, they know a lot more about CT than all newbies.  Talk about a false elitist attitude.

Finally, I did this just for fun people.  And because I found it to be a worthwhile challenge.  Get off my back.

Well, if you're talking about the codes I listed, it's possible they won't all work--there are different versions of CT after all.

Will have to check out the Coloseum (waiting on V.2...)

I sense a little sarcasm there, Zeppelin.   :)

Okay, so the battle usually doesn't end up lasting too long, and Magus always wins.  BUT, this is something that CT hackers have been trying to pull off for ages--just look at any CT board, including this one, for the proof of that.

Still working on a way to get the 2nd Magus vs. Magus meeting to happen...

I for one have wanted to see this happen for years.  And, with a combination of info from this site, the classic GG codes, and plain dumb luck, I've finally pulled it off...a SOLO Magus vs. Magus battle!  And I've got the savestate to prove it, if anyone's willing to host.

Here's how you can pull it off.

Step 1: Load any advanced savestate and put Magus in the first position in your party.  Go to 1000 AD Truce.

Step 2: Enter the following code and activate it.  This resets the event counter to just before Magus' battle.
7f000089 (Ozzie Defeated)

Step 3: Enter the Truce Market, then enter these codes.  After that, walk around in circles within the Market for a bit.
c0102cda (???)
c09b47ff (Walk Thru Walls)

Step 4: You will appear in a wall near the midpoint of Magus' Castle.  Walk through the wall towards the exit to your left.  Enter it, then turn the last two codes off.  A word of warning: even with those codes off, backtracking in the Castle, or pressing "down" in the wrong place, can cause you to go to an unexpected location such as Manoria Cathedral.

Step 5: Fight through Magus' Castle until you reach the Inner Sanctum and approach Magus...

Step 6: When you see the line, "Frog: Magus!!", then enter these codes and activate both of them.
7e2981ee
7e2982ee
This step empties the 2nd and 3rd positions in the active party.  Those characters will be "erased" until you turn the codes back off.

Step 7: Enjoy!

Sorry about the guest post there...(remind me to set auto-login).

Anyway, I've finally determined what appears to be the EXACT formula for weapons damage by Crono/Frog/Robo/Magus:

Hit Point loss = (Weapon Strength * 20/9 + PWR * 16/3) / 255 * (255 - Enemy Defense) + (0 to PWR/3) + 0.5

It's 1 HP off or spot-on every time.  As an example, let's say you've got Crono maxed out (Rainbow w/ weapon strength of 220, PWR of 99, and attack strength of 254).  On a normal enemy, you would expect this damage:
(220 * 20/9 + 99 * 16/3) / 255 * (255 - 127) + (0 to 99/3) + 0.5, or
(488.9 + 528.0) * 0.502 + (0 to 33) + 0.5, or somewhere between 511 and 544 with an average of 528.  This is precisely what you do get in-game.

For simplicity's sake, it's probably better just to calculate off attack power (254 in the above example).  It's not as exact but it's pretty close.

Hit Point Loss = Attack Power / 64 * (255 - Enemy Defense) + 1 + (0 to PWR/3)
For a normal enemy:
Hit Point Loss = Attack Power * 2 + 1 + (0 to PWR/3)
For a 0 defense enemy:
Hit Point Loss = Attack Power * 4 + 1 + (0 to PWR/3)
For a very high defense enemy:
Hit Point Loss = Attack Power / 32 + 1 + (0 to PWR/3)

Maybe this has already been tried, but...

Has anyone considered the possibility that Square could have left (either accidentally or on purpose) "secret" entrances on the overworld map?  Remember that the entrances aren't always obvious--i.e. Vortex Pt.  It would be time-consuming to check, and probably a complete waste of time, but...it's always possible that some out-of-the-way tree, or some position behind a mountain, or some other weird place on one of the maps, COULD contain a link to a secret location.

For that matter, such links would be possible as well from within the dungeons/buildings/areas we all know of.

As I said, probably a waste of time--especially considering how much ROM checking has been done--but I'd be interested to know if anyone's ever actually scoured the maps for such a thing.

Drat, I'm always late to the party

Anyway, there's still some things in the Encyclopedia that could be tinkered with, as my other post suggests.  And I have noticed some missing/incorrect info.  As an example, the Shiva Edge is missing from the Encyclopedia's "Rank by Stats" list.

If you guys are interested in having a perfectionist look it over, I'm game.
