Something I found very appealing about that game is how the player *has* to change his/her tactics, as well as equipment, spells--damage, heals, buffs, and de-buffs, and whether to use ranged or melee or a mix so often with the hunts--truly an invigorating experience when you're party is *absolutely* wiped out when you go in all cocky ; you're right--it is very diverse game and one of the best I've played in years!  :) And that's saying something.
Certainly, it has a much more realistic setup than other games.  A master swordsman who uses broadswords isn't going to pick up a katana and just stare at it, thinking "wtf? i don't get it at all..."  You can run around with a high-level mage and swing your spear.  I love it.  If you sit there and learn the entire grid, you can do anything.  It truly is a wonder there.  This is probably the biggest plus for the game.

I just wish Final Fantasy XII had a stronger plot.  It's there, alright, and clearly if you read the creature information and all that there's a lot more depth to the world of FFXII Ivalice.  I feel like so much information got left out though.

I did like how Vaan was just an average guy, and was only a background player in the true plot of the game (even though he was the "main character".  The story truly belonged to Ashe.

Does that make sense?  You know how for most RPGs your main character is some uber-human with a sordid past, and somehow they themselves are the key to the planet's salvation?  In FFXII the "main" character, Vaan, was just a background player.
Yeah, that added to the story quite a bit.  Vaan is certainly not my favorite character (read: Balthier + Bash + Ashe = win), but running around as a simple boy on an adventure with the biggest names in history...it's pretty epic.

Yeah, I noticed the non-alignment on the conveyor too.  Not a big ugly thing, just small stuff.  Looks like a lot of work is being put in to this.  I look forward to it.

When the Telepod was first activated, and Marle's pendant reacted to it, thus causing the Gate to open and send her from 1000 AD to 600 AD, only she was gated.  Her pendant stayed behind.  Any theories on how she lost it, but Crono was able to gate and keep the pendant?

Just a random thought.

Note: I am currently watching CT unglued for the simple fact that you posted said words, and they have cause me laughter.

"Screw the Millennial Fair.  I'm playing Final Fantasy II today."
*Insert the Entity slapping Crono with a trout for undermining history's changing*
*Insert Lavos laughter*

(must find a laughter to suit Lavos...hmm)

I always saved all my Magic and Power Tabs to make him a tank.
1. Save all tabs.
2. Level all to **
3. Use tabs to fill un-**'d stats.
4. ??
5. Profit.

I picture him as a lead singer of a metal band.  The band consisting of Slash on guitar 1 (sounds familiar), Magus on guitar 2 and vocals, Flea on bass (hmm, sounds familiar too) and Ozzie on drums.  Thats what I picture when I listen to a certain song anyway.
And this song you speak of...what is it?

We know who is daddy's favorite.

I officially find d3viant entertaining.  You better NEVER leave the Compendium or I'll find you and make you say more witty things.  I'll keep you locked up in my basement and...

...What?...Oh.  Yeah.

Final Fantasy IX.  I HATED it the first time I played it through.  But then I waited two years or so and gave it another run and I fell in love with it.  It's my favorite of the Final Fantasy's now.  Everytime I go Terra I have to create a second save file because Terra just leaves me feeling...  I dunno.  It's so "pretty" and alien and I just loved it.

God bless those sweet little Genomes.   *awwwwwwwwwwww*

Ah, the Genomes.  Terra seems like such a nice place to live.  It's like...the opposite of Gaia.  I had a save for that place too...as well as my master file...Damn Master File Memory Card has vanished.  It's the imps next door, I tell ya.  Damn theivin' imps.

FFX was interesting, but it didn't really have a story.  And story really makes up a lot of the replayability for me.  RPGs (at least how I explain them to people) are like a book.  But instead of reading, you become the character.  You take them through the most epic part of their life.  FFX came across as a pop-up book to me.  "Ooh! Pretty! Whoops, all done."

FFXII is just a big (read: HUGE) pain in the ass for me.  My boss has been playing it (nearly maxed out the 250 hour time clock), and still hasn't done everything.  I'm at like 90 hours?  I just get bored.  It really feels like an online game, but the hunts have gotten old.

1. Fly somewhere around the guy who placed the hunt.
2. Walk all around to get to his area.
3. Talk to him and find the general area of where the hunt is.
4. Walk past where you landed to find it.
5. Kill it in one hit.
6. Walk all the way back to the guy.
7. Get paid in pennies.
8. Walk all the way back to your ship.
9. Fly somewhere around the next guy who placed a hunt.

It's like reading a Lord of the Rings book every time I do a hunt.

And not only that, as interesting of a theory as it is, it wouldn't necessarily fit...

It's a GOOD theory!  It's pretty interesting, too!

It just isn't viable with what we know...

Sorry homeslice...  Nice to see you're being proactive, though!  Sometimes it takes people a while before they feel comfortable enough to jump on in!  Keep it up!
QFT.  Very good theory.

When I first played the game, i was so antsy to open the locked doors and chests that I opened them all right after Magus kicked me out of Zeal after fighting Golem.
hehe me too!  "Hurry up and wait", they say.

Quote from: Flea
"Male, female, what's the difference?  Power is beautiful and I have the power!"

My guess is that subconsciously, as Flea gained power, he also bent the gender-roles.

The Flea Vest (jap. Mayonnaise's Bra), as stated http://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Flea_Vest.html, makes him look feminine.

Doesn't Leene say that it'll be kept secret? Maybe she meant even from their own ancestors...There's also monsters in the treasury, right?...perhaps they were allowed to populate down there in order to guard the treasures over the years...
They are not under employment of Guardia, as seen by a guard being knocked out.  Mystic descendants, they be.

I never could quite put my finger on how King Guardia was totally unaware of the Rainbow Shell.  It's also odd that a "family heirloom" is in the back of a basement storage area.  I always pictured royal treasuries to be shiny and clean, with lots of goodies.  Not a supply closet.

(Before the Mystics came in)

You sure? I never fully played the PSX version so I can't be sure, but I thought you could only get that Fall of Guardia movie when you beat Lavos without getting Crono back.

I have fully played the PSX version, and Fall of Guardia plays, Crono or no.

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Re: So where are the Gurus at...?
« on: May 01, 2008, 06:36:50 am »
Yeah, Gaspar's location is actually a little more specified in the game than Belthasar's. I personally always thought that one of the inaccessible other islands in Zeal, was actually 'the' deserted island in which he continued his work.
Perhaps the one with the Elemental Weapons in it? I always believed this one to be it, because of the fact that it's probably where their 'original' magic abilities originated from, and because this would also account for Spekkio's creation, somehow?
I always assumed the same.  He was busy at work on one of the other islands.  I tried for a couple minutes to find a way to it, but to no avail... :(

Belthasar is an enigma. Not very much is learned about him, from this game, at least (which I personally love the fact that they actually ammended this with Chrono Cross). He is a genius. I mean, not for anything he is Guru of Reason. He constructed the Black Bird, the Ocean Palace, the Epoch & Neo-Epoch. Not to mention the fact that he orchastrated all of Project Kid.
Now, why would such an intelligent person hang around in only one place all the time? hahaha. He wouldn't.
Thus, Belthasar is my favorite NPC.  hehehe Enigmatic Mystery.  His location, I never questioned just for that fact.  No one else will be able to figure out where he's off to, so there's no point racking my brain on it either.

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Re: Nu in Cursed Woods?
« on: May 01, 2008, 06:28:52 am »
i always saw them as another 'offspring of the planet'.  just like dinosaurs/reptiles eventually evolved to become reptites, just like apes/mammals evolved to become humans, i felt that the nu's evolved from something else and were just another species.  however, as a species the nu were extremely magically powerful and very cryptic and enigmatic.
Sort of like the WEAPONs in Final Fantasy VII?  Nu's are the will of the planet incarnate?  This theory would explain their haphazard nonchalant way.  Such a timeless creature (note: Belthasar) is bound to appear crazy to the normal eye.

So under your theory, every Final Fantasy ever made after the original for the NES isn't truly a Final Fantasy? o.O
Actually, Final Fantasy's aren't sequels.  Final Fantasy X-2 is a sequel to Final Fantasy X.  The rest is just a lineage of Final Fantasy titles.  ^.^

Chrono Trigger started my RPG career.  I used to rent SNES games from the grocery store.  Mostly Donkey Kong Country 3 and Harvest Moon.  But one day, Harvest Moon was being kept late by some asshole who didn't return it on time.  So I looked for something else to spend my money on ($3 for 3 days, ftw).  I happened upon a box labeled Chrono Trigger.  Read the back, looked cool, so I rented it.  Little did I know, that asshole, and that decision changed my life forever.

Went home, popped it in my SNES, and I was immediately hooked.  Couldn't tell you how many times I've made use of the New Game + feature.  I even bought the Final Fantasy Chronicles even though I owned both Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy II on SNES.

The story, the characters, the music (which I've been whistling for years, and now has become my ringtones [I am not obsessed...I am not obsessed...I am not--oh look, Chrono Trigger!]), have driven me mad over the years.

Another game that changed my life...hmm...Final Fantasy IX.  I've played that one too many times as well.  I'm basically a human strategy guide for both.  Squaresoft's farewell to the PlayStation is lighthearted with a great soundtrack, and goes back to the class system they left years ago.  It even has a thief as the hero (speed ftw).  The characters are very vivid, and it's just so fun to play.

I started up another file on FFIX recently.  Didn't even finish Disc 1.  I started up Chrono Trigger again WHILE playing FFIX.  We know who is daddy's favorite.
