The man inspired generations of young people to believe in the power of friendship and hard work. May he rest in peace.

News Submissions / Re: I need to talk to ZeaLitY and Ramsus.

I'm intentionally hard to reach, whereas ZeaLitY is just incredibly busy.

Unfortunately, it sounds like ZeaLitY is the person you really need, but there are many experts throughout the site. I imagine most only check here on a nostalgic whim.

Can you write a news post as a call to action for volunteers? We can add it to the front page.

Site Updates / Server downtime
« on: September 06, 2021, 01:53:14 am »
The site was down recently due to a server disk filling up. We've doubled the size of that volume and everything should be good to go now.

I'd say we're about due for a complete upgrade of everything the site is running on, but I won't have the time until maybe this fall.

The pages that were previously disappearing should be appearing now. Try hard refreshing a few times and then post a report here in this thread if they don't.

I added a 100GB volume to our VPS due to the server running out of space. This should address the recent downtime issues the site has been having.

MediaWiki's JSON rendering API keeps returning 500 errors on certain pages. All of the custom themed pages use that API to render their content.

I haven't had time to investigate further.

Also, if that does pique your interest, look in the Dayton, Ohio area. Much lower relative cost of living with lots of jobs in the security industry. That way you won't get stuck somewhere expensive like me.

Yeah, ROMhacking as a whole is a wonderful hobby, but there's no career in it.

Even RPGmaker doesn't seem like like any more opportunistic than a hobby.

Not to knock on hobbies, as they're great... but once you have to focus on paying the bills and careers and your future you have to look at it all a bit differently. :)

ROM hacking skills translate very directly to reverse engineering, which has a lot of applications in the cyber security field. That's a pretty fun field to get into. Unfortunately, my software engineering skills are worth way more at the moment, and in the future I'll probably have more lucrative opportunities in the machine learning realm, so the cyber security thing is something I can't transition to myself.

If you can get through even several levels of the following game, you might have a fairly lucrative alternative career waiting for you somewhere:

We should probably add a Fan Music forum. I'll let one of the new admins handle that.

If it's something that would benefit from the entire community seeing it (i.e. requests for collaboration, announcing the release of new tracks, etc.), then feel free to post it in the Submissions forum.

Fixed.

The SSL certificate renewal script was putting the new certs in the wrong location. It should work seamlessly now.

Please welcome our newest admins: alfadorredux, Kodokami and utunnels.

Forum registration no longer requires admin approval. If your account registration has been overlooked in the last several months due to the influx of would-be Russian spammers, please try re-registering.

There are better, more modern forums that we could use which would help reduce the SPAM problem, but migrating all the posts, accounts, groups, etc. would be a real pain.

Given the low participation rate in the forum, it may be better to relaunch the forums/community portions of the site using more modern software and provide a read-only archive of old forum posts.

Well, it's not just the forum. There's a large number of files and pages with it.

Can you link to these? The general public isn't supposed to be able to edit the wiki.

Reddit has replaced independent web forums. Of course, independent web forums replaced newsgroups, which at one point had replaced independent bulletin board systems.

It's almost cyclical.
