General Discussion / Re: Ask Me Anything
« on: June 02, 2007, 12:20:28 pm »
Let's say I was planning a small gathering of friends and wanted snacks, but I didn't want to get the oh so typical types of chips and sodas and whatnot. I still want to get party-style snacks, but of a healthier sort, the kind available in your average supermarket, like a King Sooper's. (It's owned by Kroger, if that means anything to you.) What would I look for?

It's say I were, damn it!

  • Carrot sticks
  • Cucumber sticks
  • Celery sticks
  • Cherries
  • Grapes
  • Cherry Tomatoes
  • Nuts
  • Jelly
  • Breadsticks
  • Potato Wedges
  • Ready-cooked chicken (i.e., the kind you buy, put in the fridge and can eat cold) (possibly expensive)
  • Crackers
  • Cheese slices
  • Jam
  • I understand something called Punch is something of a staple party food in America.

Bear in mind how tolerant your friends will be of the fruit, vegetables and meat products: consider if they'll think of each item as 'rabbit food', against their vegatarianism (if they are vegetarian) etc., but first and foremost, allergies. You don't want anyone dying from those nuts you got.
You may also have some recipe books and/or family recipies kicking around you can take a look at. If it's not a surprise party, ask round for what people want, ask your mother or some other likely-party-host-at-least-in-the-past relative what they would suggest.
I know it's generally not something males enjoy doing (I know I don't), but you can try browsing in a supermarket. You can even try a small one, just for inspiration for similar items you can then get from a larger supermarket or more specialist shop.

Man it's so hilarious when people play the Hitler card to try and 'win' a non-existent argument. Molecule, nobody in this thread has stated they want homosexuals sterilised and/or killed. You can't rationally dismiss one idea just because an objectionable person agreed with it and/or went too far with it. For example, if Hitler said "1+1=2", you would obviously be wrong to do what you just did, claiming it was incorrect because Hitler did/said so (pulling the Hitler card). Besides, you can't 'use' eugenics. It's not a tool, it's a social philosophy (Wikipedia said so!).

I'd also be curious to hear what the people throwing the term around define as "against nature", as opposed to "with nature".
From a biological standpoint, homosexuals may seem a disadvantage, but they really aren't. Think about it this way: Are they inherently detrimental to humanity more than heterosexuals? No.
In face, they could, as any rational person will see, still contribute to humanity. An example for those that want to dispute it is the field of Medical Science.

Not unless you're a tomato.

It's more like right after asking him for orders 15 times.

I was attempting to make a joke by mocking people who feel they've 'owned' another person because they 'won' a perceived 'argument' that really isn't to do with them, and you just ruined it! I love British Douchebag (heck, any prejudiced) jokes. I also love jokes that mock stupid people.

Besides, if he reads this thread in chronological order, he'll see both of our hilarious posts.

Tutty bye, old bean.

Ha! I'm (partially) British and drink tea about once a year and despise coffee.

Ha ha, there's even a website called "Adventures of Keira Knightley's Jaw", although it's not actually to do with her jaw, from what I can tell. She speaks like a stereotypcial upper-class British Douchebag (ah, I love that phrase), at least in PotC.

Why did Beckett just stand with his thumbs up his ass? I figure he didn't want to kill Elizabeth, but as she was only on one ship, why didn't he simply shitcan the other one?

She's not all that attractive to me.

What're you, gay?

In terms of the humour, I agree with you for the most part, but just remember this isn't exactly an Adult-rated film; there's some comic relief in there for younger viewers who will (heh, Will) lap up anything.

I don't think the Armada was too big, considering the Spanish Armada was about 130 ships, the film's one seemed a reasonable size.

So far as I can see I agree with the rest of your post.

Considering this was (at least partly) a Disney effort, I thought the film took on a surprisingly dark tone, even in comparison to it's prequels. Perhaps unusually for a series, the sequels weren't obviously inferior to the first.
I unfortunately missed the post-credits scene, but it doesn't seem to have been crucial to understanding the films so far. It was rather surprising that Will succeeded Davy Jones and that Elizabeth didn't simply join him; why didn't she just stay with him, considering she was presumably staying at sea anyway?
The final battle scene was pulled off well, and I was actually in doubt as to who would emerge the victor for quite a while. When the Pearl's crew started singing, I felt like singing along.

As I began watching the film, more and more themes start coming back to me, and I started to appreciate, like ZeaLitY the depth and scale of the universe and plot. Plot-wise I couldn't fathom what happened to Calypso, I guess she just forgave everyone and let them be. What also seemed unclear was why Davy Jones 'had' to ferry the souls, when they seemed to be doing just fine without him. A quick explanation of how this affected anything would have been nice. I think there's definitely potential here for more films.

I was surprised how often I felt myself laughing out loud during the film, and at the diversity of the humour. Perhaps my favourite joke was at the end, when Jack's compass pointed to his rum (although the Transformers ad before the film had me in stitches).  At the opposite end of the spectrum from this relatively subtle humour, were moments such as when the two British Douchebags crashed into the side of the Pearl during their attempt to swing across.

Speaking of British Douchebags, it was pleasing to see Beckett and co. played by English (or at least English-sounding) actors. Beckett was a lot less of a 'goodie goodie two-shoes', taking a darker, caniving turn for most of the film.

Ok, that probably seemed largely incoherent and all-over-the-place, but it was a long film and my mind hasn't had time to arrange it fully.
