Magic, Elements, and Technology / Creation of the Masamune
« on: December 01, 2005, 09:24:44 pm »
Well... Maybe Melchior had begun work on his Red Knife, which, during the time leading up to the Ocean Palace incident, became the sword we know as Masamune?

Though, I've also heard some better ideas, like that Melchior threw the knife into the Machine in the original timeline, which makes sense out of desperation.

... I'm still not entirely sure how you turn a basic red knife into a fancy broadsword by throwing it into a hunk of metal, albeit magical metal, but, eh. Different strokes.

Magic, Elements, and Technology / Magic in CT and CC
« on: December 01, 2005, 09:14:38 pm »
Dreamstone, as I understand it, was used both as currency (I can't remember the exact quote) and as a symbol of power (I believe it was Ayla who said that the strongest received it). Going solely by that, I would assume that the prehistoric humans, sensing some sort of natural, magical pull to the Dreamstone, valued it more highly than other materials.

It could be that the Dreamstone nurtured planetary magic, and, perhaps, is contained in a distant descended form inside of Chrono Cross's Elements (I know nothing of geology; please don't kill me), so that would probably be the source of, say, Azala's magic (if we assume it was magic, and not psychic/timewarp power). Heck, this type of stone may even be a sort of cousin to the Sun Stone, which is known to possess natural magic, and thus holds enough magical power of its own to create such artifacts as the Masamune and Schala's Pendant.

My guess is that the Frozen Flame, a splinter of the ridiculously powerful Lavos, serves as a sort of counterbalance to Dreamstone -- they seem to be made of similar magical power, but the Flame is more predisposed to the dark side of things, being basically a piece of Lavos Lint -- and that, given the proper stimulus, the Dreamstone could serve as a medium for conducting the elements. This would also probably have something to do with the fact that the Masamune weakens Magus, with his powers inextricably tied to Lavos, and therefore the Frozen Flame, as its magic would react, dispel, and reject the magic that Magus uses.

Characters, Plot, and Themes / The "Chrono Trigger"
« on: July 04, 2005, 08:28:57 pm »
The Chrono Trigger, I believe, is any one thing or being of such monumental importance to the time-space continuum that it possesses an unnatural power to affect time.

In the original game, any number of such things could be assumed as 'Triggers,' but foremost are two: Crono and Marle's pendant.

Crono seems to be a normal boy. But, for some reason, he was gifted with the bravery to follow Marle through that Gate, thus beginning the whole of Chrono Trigger. Whether that's through fate, manipulation by an Entity, or just pure coincidence that he was there at the time, we may never know. His bravery is potent throughout the adventure, be it the first Gate's formation; the decision to destroy Lavos; or his sacrifice at the Undersea Palace. He's an extraordinary young man, with extraordinary natural talent and courage that makes him worthy of the title "Chrono Trigger."

Second would be the pendant. This is an object so singularly tied to the mysterious Red Rock, bathed in the black light of Lavos' Mammon Machine, that it seems to 'trigger' the Entity's will... Or something along those lines. What my point is, is that the pendant has been irrevocably tied to the fate of the Earth, through its heritage and exposure to Lavos... and, of course, Schala and her family. That pendant, as well as Crono, could be considered a "Chrono Trigger."

Essentially: A Chrono Trigger is any object, place, or person so powerful and essential to the flow of time that it possesses unnatural influence.

... Of course, take all that for what it's worth.

Edit: As usual, I've completely forgotten something. In this case, it was the entirety of Chrono Cross... Dear me, that's frightening.

In Cross, the idea of a "Chrono Trigger" remains mainly the same -- something with an innate, unnatural influence on the timestream that is capable of changing the very fabric of reality and time itself.

We have Serge, of course, as a major CT... Forgive me if I mess anything up, it's been so long since I played Cross. Serge was the focal point of Schala's remaining good, the "trigger" for the splitting of the dimensions through his connection to the Flame and Lynx's attempted (or, actually completed) drowning. In his position as Arbiter to the Frozen Flame -- and, therefore, Lavos/TD -- he is an integral part of all space-time's fate. This is a supernatural kid we have here -- nearly died twice, came into contact with an otherworldly object, destined to decide the fate of all space-time... He's got a lot on his shoulders. Why his cries, of all people's, was heard by Schala, I cannot say... Perhaps the Planet imbued him with some special connection to her and the DBT at birth, and at random, as an instrument of destroying the Time Devourer. Or, maybe Belthasar somehow affected things. What matters to me, is that he has almost absurdly bad luck to be chosen to endure all that and more.

We also have the Time Eggs, namely Kid's amulet and Belthasar's Egg. These are created by, arguably, two of the greatest geniuses in history -- Lucca and Belthasar, respectively -- and are so well-manufactured, brimming with such power, that they can serve as Chrono Triggers in a separate, but similar way to Serge. I honestly don't remember much about them, so I will refrain from further comment and speculation.

And then there's Kid, a clone of Schala, forged from the Darkness Beyond Time... Who is inevitably tied to Schala and her binding, as well as carrying the Astral Amulet. As she's so undeniably tied to Schala, I'm thinking she is a Chrono Trigger in the same vein as Serge -- affected by a force from the Darkness Beyond Time -- but in an even stronger sense, as she was actually birthed by Schala in Lavos' captivity.

... I honestly don't know what else to say. Discount my ramblings if you wish... It's been far too long since I've played the actual games to really add insightful commentary. And, I haven't really read any of the articles here in a LONG time, either...

Sorry for intruding.

Kajar Laboratories / Redux or not? To write or not to write?
« on: July 04, 2005, 07:46:00 pm »
This is somewhat surprising to me, but... I hadn't thought of that, believe it or not.

Usually, any original fiction I try to write, either I lose interest or the finished project is crud. So, I've been somewhat tapering off from that... not that I'm all that good, anyway.

More than anything, I suppose, I guess I'm just sort of giving a gasping breath as a self-proclaimed "writer." I don't really quite know what I'm doing, which is all-too-common.

... Sorry if I sound "emo."

Either way, I suppose, I'll try and figure something out... Thank you for that bit of advice. I'll probably still try something Chrono-oriented to start off with, but maybe it'll re-spark my interest.

Sorry for using your time in such a way.

Kajar Laboratories / Redux or not? To write or not to write?
« on: July 04, 2005, 06:56:56 pm »
Hmm... Hmm. I've been bored lately, and I wanted to start on a dream of mine -- to rewrite CT as a fanfiction, with my own style woven in.

The problem BEING, I don't know if I'd be able to do it justice or not. I'd probably need a lot of help, and where better to ask than here, the hub of the Chrono series?

My status is as follows: I've completed a basic outline of three chapters and a prologue, all of which could doubtless be added upon. I've only really been used to writing roleplay style -- in reply -- so I can't make any assurances of quality or artistic style. I don't claim to be able to match the Chrono Trigger Novel project, either... Far from it, I know they'd do it better than I can. But, a "dream" is a "dream," and "passion" has a tendancy of spurring one on in one's endeavors.

So. I come here in a humble request for help, for a test audience, and for the accomplishment of a dream.

Please, any help you might give, I will take.

I thank you for your time, and I wish for a favorable response.
