The real problem comes with sprite assembly -- the data that tells the game engine where all the little subtiles go in each animation frame. Vehek's the resident expert on that, and I'll be mooching off of his investigations when I (hopefully) detail it. For now, a new sprite would have to match up subtile-by-subtile, meaning you couldn't put an eight-legged octupus over Crono, but you could put in a sprite that's very similar to Crono in terms of shape and animations.

Well that's pretty fascinating. I followed the tutorial and got Crono the right color and all. I actually have an old archived SNES9X save state I wanted to import but apparently I need a ZST file...

Sadly, I've tried that and all that comes in is a scrollable window of random colors.

This experience is what kept me from hacking during my childhood. Most graphics in SNES games are compressed, making them all garbled at first appearance. Luckily Geiger includes a hugely useful decompression feature in Temporal Flux, and my guide shall cover it.

Here's a neat trick -- open up an unheadered Chrono Trigger ROM in TileMolester and do a Navigate > Goto...Offset 1272C0. You should see Crono's sprite data, just off-color because I need to rummage through Geiger's notes and see where the palette data is stored.

Aha...

I actually tried the IPS patch that replaces Luuca with Schala, but it didn't work very well for me. Lucca ended up as a flickering gritty brown box mixed with a brownscale, chopped up girl sprite and her original self. One look at it made me look at it like...ick.

I actually came across those sprites and wanted to insert them in my CT ROM copy using TF but being as I couldn't find a single sprite editor all day, let alone save the sprite sheet to my documents folder, I've been trying to seek assistance.

No, I wasn't going to distribute it to the public, let alone mooch up all the credit. I just wanted to make it for myself and give a copy of it to my ex for his 22nd birthday.

Sure thing!

Just if you do make a patch make sure you tell me I want to try it to see how the sprites look in action

You are in extreme luck. I'm going to be writing a guide for Chrono Trigger sprite insertion over the next few weeks. Once you learn, you could join the Crimson Echoes team in no time flat if you like. They're in huge need of sprite editors and inserters.

The thing to watch out for with sprite re-insertion is making sure that one character's "graphics pack" doesn't run into another's upon re-insertion.

Probably the best utility for general graphics viewing is TileMolester, available here:
http://www.romhacking.net/utils/109/

Here's a tutorial if you'd be interested in getting used to the interface. TileMolester is the utility my graphics insertion guide will be based on.

Sadly, I've tried that and all that comes in is a scrollable window of random colors.

Hehe, yes it's silly, but it popped up in my head since I enjoy both.

I was perhaps considering making a miniature custom campaign of some part in the Chrono storyline for use in the Warcraft III real-time strategy game. This wouldn't be an easy task, though it is possible. This would require a good deal of AI scripting, custom models, textures, and sound effects to put into the map. It would consist of custom factions, as well.

To help understand my idea, I wanted to begin with the units and hero units I've come up with (incomplete):

The "Zeal Kingdom" unit group

Hero unit: Zeal Queen
Spells/abilities: Hallation, Skygate, Siphon Energy, Summon Lavos Spawn (available at lv6)
Description: Powerful spellcaster hero unit able to leech health and mana off an ally or enemy unit

Unit: Scholar
Spells/abilities: Heal, Dispel
Description: Basic healer unit

Unit: Royal Guard
Spells/abilities: Defend
Description: Basic melee unit

Unit: Nu
Description Primary miner/lumberjack unit

Building unit: Shrine of Zeal (100 gold, 100 lumber), Temple of Zeal, Palace of Zeal
Capabilities: Train Nu (25 gold, 1 food), Upgrade to Temple (Shrine ability, 250 gold, 150 lumber), Upgrade to Palace (Temple ability, 350 gold, 225 lumber)
Description: Primary base building for towns

Building unit: Kajar (250 gold, 75 lumber)
Capabilities: Train Scholar (150 gold, 3 food) , Scholar Apprentice Training (75 gold), Scholar Master Training (150 gold, 100 lumber)

This is just a sample. I still need more to outline

I've been looking everywhere for a tool that....well my priority is sprite editing, and I'm not looking to just assign sprites already in the game, but rather import my own to replace the original of say...Chrono or Marle. I know it's possible because of the numerous IPs patches like Azala's and justin3009's, not to mention the epic work done by Kajar Labs.

My problem is that I can't find said features in TF and every other tool I've come across is just stats/dialog text editing. Any references or pointers or what not would be appreciated.

EDIT: To be specific, I mean justin3009's patch really. Not to single him out or anything, just want to avoid confusion if there've been multiple attempts at this.

Welcome to the Compendium! I'm surprised I haven't seen more topics like this around in all my time here.

I always thought Lia Sargent (Shion in Xenosaga Episodes I & III) would make a great Schala.

I ought to look her up.

Haha thanks! Uhm, let's see

Amanda Wynn-Lee: If she can voice Rei Ayanami and impress me, Schala's an easy tackle
Christopher Lloyd: Please tell me you recognize this name...
Debi Derryberry: Especially talented as the voices of young women and young boys. Examples are: Dortin from the Orphen PS2 game, Ryo-ohki, Yugi, and Misao/Pixy Misa from the various Tenchi serieses, title character of Jimmy Neutron in the Nickelodeon cartoon.
Jeff Bennett: He does some routine cartoon roles and I think his voice as Illidan in World of Warcraft was really cold sounding -- an ideal Magus
Michael McConnohie: This guy has a HUGE voice cast history -- over 200 roles! He's done D3 in Tenchi Muyo OVA 3 English dub, Kel'Thuzad, Aeonus and the Epoch Hunter from WoW, Uther (and Kel'thuzad again) from Warcraft III, as well as a ton of anime roles. He is the chairman of Voxworks, a Nevada based voice casting company and he is well versed in various accents -- http://www.mcconnohie.com
Peter Messaline: Not very common, but his role as a few characters in old shows like Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of the Dark really impressed me about his voice talents.
Petrea Burchard: Well known for her role as the English voice of Ryoko in the various Tenchi anime serieses, I think she suits Zeal pretty well. Also, I am well acquainted with her and she's about a 15 minute drive from where I live ^_^ http://www.petreaburchard.com
Richard Cansino: I think with his voicing of the girly male villains Seiryo and Tsugaru in Tenchi made him an obvious Flea
Spike Spencer: Even though he's known for his voicing of young teen boys in anime like Majic Lynn in Orphen and Shinji Ikari in Evangelion, what really made me think he'd make a good Slash was his voicing of Attumen the Huntsman in World of Warcraft

This is my opinion for a voice cast if anyone were to make an anime of the Chrono series. This is an incomplete list and a few select voice actors I feel are pretty good with multiple roles in some cases:

Belthasar: Michael McConnohie
Dalton: Peter Messaline
Flea: Richard Cansino
Gaspar: Chistopher Lloyd
Harle: Debi Derryberry
Janus: Debi Derryberry
Kid: Debi Derryberry
Magus: Jeff Bennett
Melchoir: Michael McConnohie
Queen Zeal: Petrea Burchard
Schala: Amanda Wynn-Lee
Slash: Spike Spencer
