Chrono Trigger DS Analysis / Re: My Thoughts on CTDS
« on: January 26, 2009, 04:01:08 pm »
That's probably the best user review of CTDS I read so far. While I prefer the new translation as a whole, I do miss some of the old dialogue, but who am I to pick and choose which?

As for Frog's dialect, I always thought it was to emphasize the fact that he was an outsider. He lives on his own in a forest without anyone to communicate to. Of course he'd sound different from everyone else. Sure it was a little much, but I saw it as a symbolic thing.

8.5 is around the score I'd give it as well.

On a side note, it'd be really nice if the Ending Log let players actually view the endings rather than sum them up.

Wow, a lot of people like doing Magus - Janus. I just really can't handle ordinary citizens suddenly knowing his Zeal name.

Personally, I feel he wouldn't want to be known as Janus, the little boy who couldn't help his sister. I never rename him. It seems out of character.

Chrono Trigger DS Analysis / Re: Strategy on beating... [SPOILERS!]
« on: January 26, 2009, 01:46:41 pm »
Then why not the Dragon Arm & the PrismSpecs over Apocalypse Arm & Dragon Tear? It's going to be more consistent damage. 9999 damage still certainly looks nice though.

Even with the Dragon Arm & PrismSpecs, DD's defenses are too strong. 9999 happens regardless of defenses.

Now, I'm not saying to go with Apocalypse Arm for every other battle. I just think its the best option against the DD.

To each their own though. That's the reason these games are so great. There's certainly more than one way to skin a cat as they say.

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Re: Shee's CC diary

Shee inspired me. I just re-started Cross myself. It isn't my first time, but it is my first time in eight years. I still had a save with all the characters unlocked, but I figure that's cheating, so I started over.

I just downloaded the rom and immediately played through. Great job all. The least i can do is answer the questionnarie.

1. Was Magus's reaction to finding Zeal done well?
Yes. The characterization was perfect. He expressed a bit of surprise, but didn't get overly emotional. He realized the opportunity he had, and quickly tried to take advantaged of it. Well done.

2. What did you think of the status screen art and colors?
I loved it, but I must admit, it did make me realize this wasn't an official game. It stood out from the Toriyama art, but it aslo gave the game a sense of identity.

3. Was the Gaspar and Janus scene okay?
I really enjoyed this. It made a lot of sense. The music during this scene was also really nice, although I tend to think of that song be related more to the End of Time than I do being related to Gaspar. Still, it worked well. Great scene.

4. Did you find the Cerulean Lake before you had to go there? What did you think of it?
Yes I found it. I enjoyed the scene. The battle was nice. Luckily, I quickly found out the appropriate strategy to beat the Nu.

5. Was the Prophet's trumped-up, flowery dialogue cheesy or dramatic?
The dialogue worked well and made a lot of sense in terms of story. That being said, it didn't really fit the Chrono Trigger tone. It was...well...it was better. This is a good thing, but at the same time, sometimes it didn't really feel like Chrono Trigger.

6. Was the Beast's Nest dungeon design done well? And the scene with the Lasher?
Absolutely. It felt like a real dungeon. I even found the coin. Lasher worked well here as well.

7. How about Mt. Woe; did the song make it seem imposing, cold, and sordid given the task of putting Melchior up there?
Yes. I loved this. The music helped to enhance the scene.

8. Did you let Melchior die?
No. I was really cautious here, and always stayed in front of him. That being said, he still got hit once.

9. How was the battle scene between Melchior and Magus? And the scene with Schala afterwards?
This was one of the highlights of the game. Of course, Melchior wouldn't go down without a fight. Of course Magus would recognize the Masamune. Great stuff. Great sprite animation. I was waiting for the Magus/Schala meeting. It worked well. The dialogue flowed naturally. I loved it.

10. What did you think of the Ocean Palace under construction?
I loved the fact that the Scouts and Mages were there. The Earthbound slaves also fit really will. It made perfect sense for the OP to be under construction at this point. Well done.

11. And, what did you think of the final confrontation and Dalton's eye?
A fitting end to the game. It took me a while to realize Dalton was missing his patch. When I noticed this, I was curious to see why. The scene really worked, it was Magus at his best. A great climax to this game.

12. What was your reaction to the clip show and ending art?
Loved it. Every scene fit into the bigger pictured. The ending art was fantastic.

13. Did you find all three Oboli?
The first time through, I found the first and last one. I missed the second one. I quickly replayed from my last save to find all three.

14. Have you listened to the Prophet's Guile EP after playing? Was including the soundtrack a good move?
Yes. I really appreciate that this was included. Beautiful job.

Once again, my thanks to all involved. Amazing job.

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Re: Chrono Trigger Ultimania

I think you're right with Kato being the artist. I compared it to some sketches I found around the net and it seems to bear a resemblance.

What on earth...? I wonder who drew these?

I doubt it is, but it reminds me of some early Masamune Shirow sketches.

General Discussion / Re: Cowboy Bebop

Fanfictions are usually extensions though...Live action movies of previous works are usually re-tellings...CTNP fits your example though...and I don't think that's a very good idea either...>_>

Good point. Fanfiction was a bad example. Think of it more as a what if tale. This is so and so's vision of Cowboy Bebop...you may like it, you may hate it. Just don't let it ruin your enjoyment of the original.

As an avid reader, I've learned to seperate motion pictures from their original properties. Cowboy Bebop was so good because of its music and animation. The live action movie will be a different monster entirely, but don't let that ruin your enjoyment of the original anime.

It's something else entirely. Like a work of fan fiction.

Is that a Metalocalypse reference that I can't hope to understand? Hmmm...what does metal have to do with coffee...??

I still don't get the Lost Sanctum's role in CTDS. More than likely we're getting subliminal hints from there (alongside the DVs) about the next game.

I still think the Temporal Research Lab that we went to in the Future DV may be a nod to Cross, since IIRC it was mentioned somewhere as what Chronopolis was based on.

I tend to agree with you. The Lost Sanctum and the DVs are first seemed liked forced extras without much feeling or significance to the game or series. After exploring, the DV in particular expressed ties to Chrono Cross. They weren't very subtle about this. Dalton flat out stated his intentions with Piorre and the DD appears after defeating the three vortices.

I'm a very casual viewer of Metalocalypse, but every episode I see I enjoy. I was a big fan of Brendon Small's other show, Home Movies. That was one of my favorite cartoons of all time. Both feature Small's own music.

I love Mario Kart...especially with drinking rules.

I love Bill Willingham's Fables. Especially when Mark Buckingham is doing the art.

I love Chrono Trigger and my DS.

I love LaBatt Blue.

V_Trans and Shadow, thanks a bunch for the GBA and DS suggestions. It would seem that old school RPG goodiness is readily available on the DS.

On that subject, has the Earthbound (Mother) series seen any US ports or only in Japan?
