The Top RPGs of ALL Time (by "Era")
« on: September 18, 2007, 09:27:47 pm »
Alright, I've wanted to do this thread in the Compendium for a long time, regardless of the fact that 1) I know it's going to be biased towards the Chrono series and 2) I know not everyone in the community may be that versed in, say, some of the oldschool classics and I know I'm not very up-to-date on the newschool.

The "Eras" will be split up mostly by the graphical eras. 8-Bit being Nintendo Entertainment System/Famicom (NES/F) & Sega Master System (SMS), 16-Bit being Super Nintendo Entertainment System/Super Famicom (SNES/SF) & Sega Genesis (SG), 32-Bit being Sony's Playstation (PSX), 64-Bit being Nintendo's 64 (N64)...though I think it might be prudent to combine the PSX & N64 eras since they did come out at relatively the same time and were basically each other's competition (and besides, there weren't many N64 RPGs)...then we can have the PS2, GC, & XBOX and then the current PS3 & XBOX360...

Now, the two segments I'm having trouble defining is the handheld eras & the PCs. I think it's safe to put the Gameboy & the Gameboy Color together (along with any Gamegear RPGs anyone could think of)...but what about the newer ones? GBA stand-alone? DS & PSP together? I guess that actually works, huh...But what about PCs? Seperately? Maybe put them up against those with the same graphical abilities (which I'd definitely need help defining)?

Well, anyways.
1) Ratings will be out of 10 with percentages encouraged for accuracy's sake (I would do 100/100, but that seems ridiculous). I'll try and contain the list to this first post and calculate in each new post. I think it goes without saying (though I'm obviously going to anyways) that
2) you should only vote for games you've played...I'd almost suggest games you've beaten or at least played through most of the way...but I for one know that some RPGs just aren't worth it...
3) at least try and have valid reasoning behind your scores people! Even if you don't post said reasons. Also, try and
4) include the system! I'll do some of my voting right now to give examples...

ATM I only feel like reviewing the SNES ones. i'll do the others later.

SNES

1. Chrono Trigger- 10

2. FFVI- 9.5

3. FF IV- 8.5

Choosng between CT and FFVI was a bit of a tough descision, as FFVI was one of the very first RPGs I've ever played. However, I would have to say that Chrono Trigger is one of the most enjoyable video games I've played in my life. The plot, the gameplay, I just love the whole package despite any apparent flaws.

V_Translanka voted for Final Fantasy Tactics, so yeah Shining Force counts. Also, I was considering voting for Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen but I didn't like the game that much overall.

I must complain about the list of every person here. They're all well known games. Where're the lesser known RPGs? Where are the Might and Magics, the Ultimas, the Wizardrys, the indie games like Spiderweb Software's Exile/Avernum series and so on and so forth?

Bias. Simple bias, this is!

Basically, you're only supposed to rate games that you've already played thoroughly.

I did play a few Ultimas for the NES and SNES on emulators, but not enough to consider myself able to rate them.

Actually, though, there have been some amazing indy RPGs out there. Try Legion Saga, it surpasses the limits of its engine (RPG Maker) with a good story and very innovative gameplay. I would definitely consider it one of the top 10 PC RPGs.

I have only played wizardry 1-3 on the nes and it was terrible, this might due to it being on the nes. the only Ultimas that I liked were 1/7/8 and none of them out shine my list. Also I am picky with my games If I hear is good I try it even if that means I will follow the market some times. Besides look at these M.U.L.E., Planescape: Torment, Nethack, Darksun: Shattered lands, Shining force2 there all obscure in my crowd. if you want good games that are forgotten go to www.the-underdogs.info.

LIST UPDATED AFTER GENERALITY'S POST ("Actually, though, there have...")
^^^
just to help me know when I last updated

Zakyrus, yeah, since this list is definately going to include SRPGs and Radical Dreamers, the definition of RPG is going to be fairly loose, so I'll include the mostly platformer Simon's Quest...I guess...Also, thanks for being the first person to think an RPG was absolutely perfect...At least it was a vote for Chrono Trigger...lol

Kebrel, thanks for reminding me of the Sega Dreamcast...funny because I own one...I probably didn't think about it because there were only, like, two really good RPGs on it...which were eventually ported/remade onto other systems. And, Skies of Arcadia IS one of them, but I'm not accepting anything over a 10/10, so that's how I'll assume your real grade is...

Also, Kebrel, BoF3 was on the GBA??? Are you sure you're not talking about the port of BoF2?

Also, I think I'm going to round up to the hundreths because Chrono Trigger's rating is 9.67857142 (italics repeats)...isn't there a mathmatical symbol or something for when numbers repeat into the infinite? For now I guess I'll leave them be...

Man, this actually takes so long I don't have time to add any of my own...V_V Maybe when there's a lull...

EDIT: Also, there's a ton of games in the PS2, XBOX, etc section where systems either aren't given. Help would be nice....but I guess I could just Google/GameFAQs if it comes to that.

What about King's Quest, or Quest for Glory? Those being included too?
