（要約）

青木：　ふつうのRPGではイベントに入ってしまうとプレイヤーが今まで操っていたキャラクターを操作できなくなってしまいます。そしてイベント中はコンピュータが勝手にキャラクター達を動かし、その間プレイヤーはジッとその状況を見ていなければなりませんでした。ということは、そのイベントは100人がプレイしても、全ての人が同じ結果を迎えてしまうということですよね。でも、もしイベントの間でもプレイヤーがキャラクターを自由自在に動かすことができて、色んな人に話し掛けられることができるとしたら、プレイした人によって、そのイベントのストーリーが幾つも分岐するということですよね。

時田：　そういうことを可能にするため、イベント中でもプレイヤーがキャラクターを自由に操作できるように今回作りました。

坂口：　これがエーテルというシステムなんです。

北瀬：　うちの開発者の間ではアクティブタイムイベントロジックとも言っています。

坂口：　芝居をしている人々がいるとします。イベント中でもキャラクターを動かせることで、お芝居に出演している人々に話し掛けることができるわけです。しかしただイベント中にキャラクターを動かせることができるといっても、別に何も感動はないわけです。ただ普通のRPGと違うのは、動ける間にお芝居をしている人達に話し掛けることで、お芝居そのものの流れが変わってしまうということです。簡単な例を挙げてみると、お芝居を演じてるキャラクターに邪魔してやろうと思って話しかけると、そいつが「邪魔するなよ!!」と怒ったりします。

時田：　またある場所では、ボスキャラの長いメッセージを聞いてられないよ!!と思って動き回ってしまうと、　逆に背後から敵に襲われてしまうなんてこともあるわけですよ。これによってイベントそのものの展開　が少し変わってしまいますよね。

青木：　普通だったらボスキャラのところへ行くと「よく来たな。ワハハハ」といった長い前口上を聞いてから　戦闘に入ることになりますよね｡でもクロノトリガーの場合､イベント中でもプレイヤーを動かすことが　できるので、ボスが喋っている間も歩き回ることができるのです。シーンによっては、ボスの話を聞く　のが嫌だと思ってスタスタ歩いてると､「どうしてお前は俺の話を聞かないんだ!!」って言っていきなり　戦闘に入ることもあるわけです。

時田：　それだけでイベントとして違うものが楽しめるんですよ。やっぱり自分達でゲームを作ってると、　イベントで毎回「ここは見せたいよな」って思うんです。そしてそのイベントに凝れば凝るほど何度も　ゲームをプレイしてチェックするわけじゃないですか。その時にイベントが長すぎると思うときもある　し。でも開発者としてみればイベントが長すぎても見せたいところは見せたいんですよ。その両方を　活かすにはどうしたらいいか？それで出た結果が、このアクティブタイムイベントロジックという　システムだったんです。

坂口：　エーテルともいいます。開発者の心の傷を癒すエーテルという意味で…。

時田･青木･北瀬：　癒してない、癒してない(笑)。

坂口：　ＦＦのエーテルとは関係ないですね。

時田：　結構このエーテルというシステムを取り入れると作る方は辛いんですよ。何か起こるかわからない　ですからね。

坂口：　歴代ＦＦを作ってきたメンバーがこのゲームの開発スタッフですからね。だからこそ気持ちとしては　クロノトリガーはＦＦの次世代という気で作っています。

北瀬：　主人公が「喋る」「喋らない」どちらにするかということで堀井雄二さんとだいぶ喧嘩しましたね(笑)　ゲーム中では絶対に主人公に話をさせてはダメだと堀井さんはおっしゃるんですよ。スクウェアの　中でも、主人公は喋らない方がいいという意見と、喋った方がいいという意見の２つに分かれました。　最終的に主人公が喋らないゲームを作るという方向に決まったのですが、主人公が喋らないと決ま　った瞬間、イベントの作り方が変わりましたよ。

青木：　主人公がしゃしゃり出てきて喋るということがないじゃないですか。やっぱり今までのRPGと雰囲気が　違いますよ。

時田：　主人公が喋るのも喋らないのも、どちらも違う気持ち良さがあると思いますけどね。主人公が喋る　ということは、どうしてもそれだけでそのキャラクターの性格が決まってしまうということなんです。

青木：　それによりプレイヤーは主人公に対し好き嫌いが出てくる。かといって、主人公をあまりにアクの　強いキャラクターにしてしまうとプレイヤーに嫌われてしまうし。だから今までは主人公には、割と　差し障りのないことしか言わせられない、というのが現状でした。そういうことを考えると、主人公を　喋らせないことに対しての利点というのも勿論出てくるわけですよ。

北瀬：　確かに主人公が喋らないことによって、プレイヤーがゲームに入りやすいことは事実ですね。この　システムには考えさせられました。

青木：　主人公が喋らない上、さらに最初に説明したエーテルというシステムを導入したことで､一般のRPG　よりもクロノトリガーではプレイヤーがキャラクターに感情移入しやすいはずですよ。

北瀬：　戦闘は、ＦＦシリーズみたいにフィールドを歩いているとガラッと音楽が変わって戦闘に入るのか、　それとも常に敵が画面に見えていて、接触すると画面が切り替わらず静かな音楽のまま戦闘に入る　方がいいのか、どちらがいいのか実際試行錯誤しながらやっていってみました。

時田：　戦闘で画面が切り替わらずにそのままバトルに入るということは、結構今までのゲームとは違って　不思議な感じがしたね。

青木：　このシステムを導入したことで、例えば歩いているときに足にツルが巻きつくとか、茂みに敵が　潜んでいて突然目の前に出てくるなどの演出を１つ１つ手作りで何100種類と作っているわけです。　だから用意されている演出が全て違うということで、イベントと同じようにゲームを盛り上げるいき方も　できると思います。このバトルシステムはゲームを作る側にとったら大変ですよ。でも毎回毎回違う　驚かし方ができるということがこのシステムのいいところですね。

時田：　イベントと同じくらい時間をかけて、ネタも脳味噌が枯れるまで練んなきゃいけないかなという感じ　ですよ。

青木：　単にうろついてるモンスターに触るだけではなく、ある銅像に主人公の体がちょっとでも当たると　バトルになったり、またある床を踏んでしまうと敵が登場したりなど、色々なタイプの仕掛けが用意　されています。こういうことはこのバトルシステムでしか味わえませんよ。敵が見える分、仕掛けが　豊富なんです。それに敵は必ずしもプレーヤーが見えるところにいるわけじゃありません。例えば、　目の前の建物の窓が開いているところから急にコウモリが飛び出してきて、突然戦闘が始まること　もあります。

時田：　それに、うろついてるモンスターでも視野を持っていて、主人公を見つけると寄ってくるものもいる　んですよ。

坂口：　でも場所によってはザコキャラを避けて進んでいくと、すぐにボスキャラに会えるところもあります　けどね。

北瀬：　色んなタイプの戦闘の入り方や戦闘に入るときの演出の仕方、そういうものがこのゲームでは　楽しめますよ。その他に見た目も楽しめますし。

青木：　FFシリーズでは、歩いているときは敵は見えずにバトルシーンに入ってから初めて「こんな奴　なんだな」ってわかるじゃないですか。でもこのゲームでは、このバトルシステムを導入したことに　よって敵と戦わなくても敵の性格がわかってしまうんです。登場してくる時のモンスターの出方によって　こいつは格好つけてる奴だとかヘンな奴だとか、敵の性格も多少わかりつつ戦闘に入れるのでは　ないでしょうか。

時田：　どういう所で、どういう風にバトルを持っていくかということがクロノトリガーを作る上で一番のキーでは　ないかと思っています。　また今回、グラフィックにはかなり気合が入っています。容量が32メガっていうのは我社でも初めての　ことですし、よく考えてみるとFF４が４本入っちゃいますよね(笑)。逆にいうと４倍も仕事をしなきゃなら　ない。

坂口：　最初は24メガの予定だったんです。でもタイムトリップもののRPGっていうと、どうしても時代によって　人の服装も変わって欲しいだとか、町の様子も変わって欲しいなど、こだわる部分も出てきます。　時計などの備品１つにしても丁寧に描き込んでありますよ。そこで容量を24メガから32メガに変更　することになりました。

時田：　グラフィックの担当者なんか、さっき言った時計１つを誰かが止めるまでずーっと描き込んでますよ。グラフィックはスーパーファミコンの限界近くまでいってるんじゃないか？って思うくらい本当に凄い。

坂口：　中世で種を植えて現代に戻ってみたら花が咲いていた、というような時間を利用したトリックを使う　ことで面白いストーリーが作れるのではないかと思いまして、今回タイムトラベルものにしました。　ここまでくるとRPGを土台にして、エンターティンメイント的に考えられる要素は、とにかく全部面白く　していこうと考えています。　堀井さんという人は結構黙ってるんですけど、相手をよく観察している人だと思いました。相手を　観察してますね。それを自分のドラマ作りに活かしているな、ということをお会いするまではわかりま　せんでしたが、今回一緒に仕事をすることになって感じました。堀井さんとは同じような職種なんで　本当の喧嘩ではないですが、ゲームを作るにあたって、こうしたいああしたというところで色んな　ぶつかり合いがありました。そのことによってゲームについて深いところまで考えられましたから、　ぶつかり合ったことも良かったんじゃないでしょうか。僕達が普段あまり気にしていないようなところを、　堀井さんは逆にいつも気にしてたりしていました。堀井さんがそういう部分にこだわっているんなら、　やっぱりそこをユーザーは見ているんだな、とか色々考えさせられましたね。いつも基本的に思惑は　だいたい一緒なんですけど、お互いに少しずつ見ている要素が違っているんです。そこがうまく融合　できて、一緒にゲームを作っていけたらなと思ってます｡クロノトリガーの宣伝では、ドラクエを作った　堀井雄二氏、FFを作った坂口博信氏という感じで名前が先行している部分があります。でも、ゲーム　を作っている本人達はあまり意識していませんよ。　面白いものっていうのは何か存在しているはずだから、それをとにかく手を抜かずに時間をかけて　作っていきましょう、それをやればきっと周りも認めてくれるし、ユーザーも買ってくれる。そんな気持ち　は堀井さんと同じでした。この気持ちは僕だけじゃなくてスクウェア自体が持っています。　勿論このクロノトリガーもそんな気持ちで堀井さんと一緒に作ってますよ。

（要約）

[バトル]

松井：今回採用した戦闘画面切り替わり無しのコマンドバトルですが、この方式を取れば逆に捨てなくては　いけないところも出てくるんです。今回の場合はそれを捨てようと先に決まってたからいいですけど、　やっぱり捨てられない部分ってありますよね。マップの表示に画面を２枚なら２枚取られちゃうから、　それで魔法のエフェクトなんかにはその分ＢＧを使えませんよって。まあ最初からそっちは捨てて、　切り替わらない方を取ってるわけですから、他のゲームのその方がいいと思えばそうやるだろうし、　そうじゃなくてやっぱり背景は１枚でよくてもう１枚はエフェクトに使いたいとなれば、やっぱりこの　方式は取らないでしょうね。切り替え無しでマップを組まなきゃいけないわけですから、マップ側の　方にも制約って出てくるんです。結局そういうことを考えてどっちを取るかっていうことなんで、今回　はこっちを取ってみたと。そうするとまた違った効果が得られるし、あまり同じものばかり作っても　仕方ないっていうか。何かを捨てて何かを取るみたいな選択はこれからもあって、また違った　ゲームが出ると思いますね。

加藤：敵関係で、最初は弓じゃ殺せない敵とかあったんですが、うざったかったんで切っちゃいました。

松井：そういうのって入れるより切る方が楽で、幹の方だと切れないんですが、枝葉だと切って風通しを　よくすることから出来るし、逆に企画当初のまんまだともう生い茂っちゃって何が何だかわかんない　から、企画後半は切るばっかりですね。

樋口：思いついたらやってみて、つまんなかったらバシバシ切っていっちゃう。ユーザーがやって面白く　なかったらそんなのはダメでしょう。それを面白くないのにそのまま入れちゃったら、企画っていうか　開発みんなのエゴでしかないから。つまんなかったらもうバシバシ切っちゃう。

松井：結構動いてからやめたのが山のようにあって。とりあえず作って、動いてるの見てやっぱりつまん　ないねって。そういう変更はしょっちゅうあるんです。今回もありすぎて何が何だかわかんない感じ　ですね。プログラマーには泣いてもらってます。でも感じとしては、今回のゲームは欲張ってかなり　詰め込んだなあって思います。かなり途中まで欲張ったまま進んでたなあってのもあるし、それを　最後でそのままパワーでなんとか詰め込んだなあという気がしますね。他のゲームだと最初の　段階でバサバサ捨てちゃうもんなんだけど、重たいものを山積みにしてバリバリやってたなあと。　こんなたくさん入ってるって感じがすると思うんですよね。




[サウンド]

松井：音楽が大変だったよね。

光田：最初は４８曲ぐらいだったんですけど、急に容量が増えたということで２０曲から３０曲ぐらいドンと　来て。それが９月で残りの期間が、あと３ヶ月。それで３０曲、まあ１本作るようなものですね。




[グラフィック]

蒲田：オープニングの振り子とかは、最近ドンキーコングとかで流行ってるコンピュータグラフィックスって　いうか、ああいう３Ｄツール使って作画してるんです。まあ次世代機をみんな考え始めてるんで、　ごく一部のグラフィックでそういったコンピュータグラフィックスとか３Ｄツール関係とかをぼちぼち　使い始めてみるかなぁと。見た目が手で描いたのとは違うんですよね。

加藤：ＦＦVIとかは使ってる？

蒲田：ＦＦVIはねぇ、魔法のエフェクトでさりげなく使ったらしいんだけど。でも基本的に使ってない。　でもやはり、結局コンピュータグラフィックスとか、最近の映画でいえばターミネーターとか、そう　いう中でＣＧってのがどういう技術で作られてるかっていうのは研究してるんで、最近スクウェア　でもよく使ってます。取り込みとか。元はコンピュータグラフィックスでやるようなテクスチャーマッピ　ングの技術の一部を使えないかなっていうんでやってみてる形ですね。実際今回も、取り込んで　テクスチャーマッピング風にちょっとこう立体を変えて貼り合わせて、それを実際の絵で使うとか　そういうことをやってるんですよね。基本的には手で描いたあったかさというのが欲しかったんで、　あんまり分かるように使うのは嫌だったんです。でもその中にも、いくつか取り込んだ絵が入って　くるとメリハリになるんで、まぁそれはいいかなという感じで使ってたんですけど。

加藤：今回結構それモメたもんね。取り込みを使うかどうかって。

蒲田：取り込み自体はどうでもいいことなんですよ。ただ、そこだけが浮き上がることに問題があった　わけで、手法としてはそんなのどうでもいいことなんで。どっちがいいかって言うわけじゃない　から、その場で使い分けていけばいいことだと思うし、どっちにしても次世代機とか考えると　そういった技術とかも学んでおいた方がいいだろうってことも当然あったし。ただ、実際のところ　は、インディとかで描いても使えないんですよ。解像度が違うんで。マックで描いたものでも、　３cm四方くらいの絵が１画面になっちゃうんです。まぁなるべく技術っていうのはさりげなく　使いたいなっていうのはあるんです。




[スクウェアでの開発]

樋口：あまり言いたくはないことなんですけども、やっぱりスクウェアのやり方っていうのは、他の会社と　違うみたいなんです。だいたい余所では、企画の人っていうのはデータをあまり組まないんです　よね。ウチの企画っていうのは凄くて、プログラマーレベルまでデータ組んだりしますから。まず　一番最初に思ったのはその辺の問題で、最近ではそういう技術がない人でもどんどん入って来　ちゃうんですが、技術が無くて入ってくる人達をどうやって使い物になるようにするかっていう。

加藤：俺なんか特にその辺思っちゃいますよね。基本的にスクウェアの企画って、かなりソフト寄りなん　で、ベーシックとかＣ言語とか、ある程度自分で趣味でかじったりしてる人間じゃないと、いきなり　ただ単にアイデアマンだけで入ってきたりした場合は、辛い立場になるんじゃないかなって。

樋口：他の会社ではともかく、ウチはデータが出来ないと企画じゃないという感じですから。新人が企画　に入ってくるのは滅多に無いですよ。中途で入ってきたとしても、そこら辺の技術の無い人は　最初凄く辛い会社だと思います。で、勉強しない人はどんどん遅れていっちゃって、いつまで　たっても下請け仕事しかしない、それしか出来なくなっちゃうんです。プログラマーなんかは最初　から技術がないと採らないから、ある水準以上は能力持ってないと採用されないよね。　絵描きの人はどうなの？

蒲田：絵描きは、そうね、最初から上手い人しかいないから。

樋口：ああそうか。

松井：難しいところなんですけど、僕なんかはアイデアをデータにしないと悔しいんですよ。アイデアを　出すんじゃなくて、アイデアをデータにするのが仕事だと思ってますからね。じゃないと、例えば　プログラマーに出来ないとか言われたら出来ないわけですし、或いはどうやってやるんだって、　他の企画に言われた時に、もう何も出来ませんよね。だからアイデアがある人間こそ、そういう　データに詳しくないと損なんですよ。実際にデータ作るところを他人の手を借りちゃう場合って、　それぞれのメンバーが自分のいい味を出したって言っても、結局実際に作業する人に仕事の　ノリを取られちゃうんです。だからやっぱりデータは出来た方がいい。どんどんツールとかも　パワーアップしてきてるし、そういう意味では昔ほど詳しくなくてもいいし。あと、プログラマー　寄りの企画とグラフィック寄りの企画というのがあって、僕なんか絵心が無いんで、絵を描ける　企画の人とか凄くうらやましいです。そういう人も活躍できる場がありますね。逆にグラフィック　の方にも、真のグラフィックって言ったら言葉は悪いんですけど、本当に絵を描くだけでいいって　言う人もいれば、それをデータにする過程までやっちゃう人もいるし。ただデータ作りは、企画の　場合は出来た方がいいと思いますけど。

樋口：あとまぁ、プログラマはプログラムだけ書いてればいいやって時代も勿論ありましたけど、例えば　ビジネス系のプログラマなんて、仕様が来て、仕様通りにプログラムすればそれで100%OKです　よね。でもゲームのプログラマっていうのは、ゲームをどういう風に自分の手で面白くするのかっ　ていう、そういう意識が無きゃダメで、企画の方にこれじゃあ面白くないじゃないかとか色々言っ　たり、仕様を貰っても仕様通りに出来ねぇよとか、そういう判断が出来ない人ってどうしてもやっ　ぱり難しいですよね。企画がプログラムもグラフィックも多少わかるのと同様に、プログラマも　企画の言う通りに作ってればいいやっていうのじゃダメですから。自分達の手でこのゲームを　面白くするんだっていう意識の無い人は、やっぱりダメですよね。

松井：データワークって言うけど、１年で覚えちゃうようなものですし、やる気とか、意欲さえあれば。

樋口：ただ中には、単にスクウェアに入りたいってだけで来たような人もいますけどね。

蒲田：安心しちゃうのかなぁ。グラフィックでも何でも、中に入ってからが大変なのに。ほんとウチの会社　のグラフィックって、下手な奴いないんですよ。当たり前なんだけども。どこの会社行ってもグラフ　ィックチーフやれるんじゃないのっていう、人間関係は別にして技術的にはそんなのばっかりなん　で、その中で目立って、やっぱりいい所取っていかないと、ゲームの中でも発言力出てこないし。　面白くないと思うんですよね。そっから先が本当に辛い闘いだと思うんですよ。

松井：発言力で言えば、企画が一番あるかって言うとそうじゃないし、メインを任されてるプログラマーの　発言力って凄く怖いし。グラフィックでも、コンセプトになる部分の絵とか描いてる人の発言力って　のは企画以上だったりするわけです。そういうふうに考えていくと、ウチの会社ってあまり職種に　とらわれていないんですね。

樋口：でもプログラマーにしたって、とっても辛い会社じゃないかなぁって思いますよ。やっぱり企画の　人が全部知ってるから。めんどくさいなぁって思ったら、出来ないって言いますね、相手が何も　知らない企画だったら。ウチの場合は知ってるから、出来ないって言えないんですよ。めんど　くさいけどー、出来る（笑）って。かわしようが無いんで、わかったやってみるって。




[容量]

蒲田：最初２４Ｍだったんだけど、最後の半年くらいでいきなり８Ｍ増えて。その増えた分ってのはプロ　グラムの方じゃなくて、どっちかっていうと音楽とか絵とか、葉っぱの部分が足されていくものなん　で、いきなり単純に絵の容量が倍になったんですよ。

松井：どこかが増えると、結局どこかが増えますよね。今まで同じ絵で描いてたダンジョンが、例えば　水のダンジョンと火のダンジョンになったとしたら、今まで水だけのオブジェで済んでたのが火を　作んなきゃいけない。それと同じで、結局どこかで増えた分は全体にかかってくる。それに容量が　増えたら、他のところで今まで切り捨てた分も何とかしなきゃいけないなって。

加藤：やっぱりほとんど絵だよね。あとシナリオのイベントとかメッセージとか。

蒲田：８Ｍのうち６Ｍくらいは絵だと思いますね。

加藤：２４Ｍで入らなくて無理矢理入れたんだよね。絵とか。けど結局溢れたし。それにシナリオとか　結構溢れたよね。魔王の城なんかも８Ｍ足されることが決まって結構太っ腹だったからこそ出来た。

蒲田：ただの絵だもんね。

加藤：ああいうのって他の所で使い回しが利かないじゃないですか。まぁ使おうと思えば使えますけどね。　月だけ使うとか。企画当初だとついケチな頭が働いちゃうから、ああいう場面って作れないものなん　です。けど、まぁそういう意味ではあの時点で８Ｍ投入されたのは良かったかなっていう。

松井：最初だったら絶対あんなのは出来ないですね。容量に直すと青ざめちゃうような。

蒲田：元々シナリオ自体がもの凄く大風呂敷だったんですよ。だから本来２４Ｍでは、今のクオリティを　保つようなデータ量は絶対入らないような感じだったんですね。それで使い回しが凄く多かったし、　そういう派手な所ってどうしても作れなかったんですよ。シナリオ追っかけるのが精一杯で。でまぁ　８Ｍ増えた分でそういう派手な見せ場みたいな所をどんどん足しちゃおうかなと。デモみたいな。　でも裁判所とか、あの手のものは最初怖くて使えないんですよ。何かあったときに少し削ろうって　ことが出来ないんで。容量が無いときは、あの手のものは全部怖くて取れないんですよ。

松井：裁判所も８Ｍ投入決定してからだしね。逆に言うと、ああいう感じのものをもっと入れようってことに　なって、８Ｍ増やそうということになった。

加藤：というか、裁判所とかは最初からあったんですよ。一番最初の頃から「クロノが中世で捕まって　魔女裁判を行う」とかあったんです。でも２４Ｍに入らないっていうんで、みんなバッサリ切っちゃっ　たんですよ。で、夏から秋になる頃に、もっと絵的に強くしようというんで、デモ的な部分をもっと　作ろうって。切り捨ててたそういう裁判所とか黒鳥号っていう巨大飛行船ですね。そこらへんの　やつを見直してもっとド派手にしようってことで、どどーんとみんな一気にやれる形になったんです。

樋口：増えた分は、ほとんどデモで流れるものですね。

松井：そう、ほとんどそうですね。出し惜しんでもしょうがないですから。どんなゲームなのか、みんな知り　たいだろうと思うし、もうやっぱり一番いいものを見せていかないとダメなんじゃないかって。　店頭で流してもらえるってのが大きいですしね。

蒲田：それにその前後の繋がりで、どういう風になるかっていうのが本当の意味で面白い所だから。　あれが単に絵面として目を引けばとりあえずいいかなって。ゲームとは違うところだから。

松井：やはり、とにかく大変だったのは大容量と、あと大人数。僕が最初にやったのはＦＦIVですけど、　それが８Ｍで、次のＶで１６Ｍになって、ロマサガが１６Ｍだったかな、でこれが２４Ｍから３２Ｍって　いう形ですね。もう最初に作ったものの４倍の容量のものを作ってるんですけど、作り方自体が　その４倍効率良くなったかっていうとそうでもなくて。その辺のところが、今回の場合はちょっと　序盤の方に出てしまったかなあって思うんですよ。だからまぁ、個人レベルでもそうだし、上の　人間もそうなんですけど、最終的にどんなものを作るとか、結果の形も大事なんですけど、それ　以前にそれをする迄に何を使うかとか、もっと周りの環境のことからやっていかない限り、ゲームを　作るのは大変になってきてると思いますよね。これで容量がもっと大きくなるとまた違って、　もっと機械化が進むのかもしれないですけど、ちょうどその過渡期でそういうことも大変だった　のかなあ。僕が具体的にやった作業についてはいつもの作業というか、こういうこと考えてこういう　ことやれば出来るなっていうことですね。最初に企画して仕事作りますよね、データを打つっていう　仕事なんですけど、どういう仕事を作れば能率的なのかっていうことをもう考えなきゃいけないし、　それを怠ると大変だなあって、そういうことを今回は考えましたね。

(Summary)

Aoki: In ordinary RPGs, once a player enters an event, he or she cannot control the characters he or she has been controlling. During the event, the computer moves the characters on its own, and the player has to watch the situation closely. This meant that even if 100 people played the event, they would all end up with the same result. But if the players could move their characters freely and talk to various people during the event, the story of the event would diverge in several ways depending on who played the event.

Tokita: In order to make this possible, we made it possible for players to freely control their characters during the event.

Sakaguchi: This is the ether system.

Kitase: Among our developers, it is also called Active Time Event Logic.

Sakaguchi: Let's say there are people performing in a play. By allowing the characters to move during the event, they can talk to the people in the play. But just being able to move your character during an event doesn't really move you. What makes it different from a normal RPG is that by talking to the people in the play while you can move, you can change the flow of the play itself. To give a simple example, if you talk to a character in a play and try to interrupt him or her, he or she will get angry and say, "Don't interrupt me! and he would get angry.

Tokita: In some places, if you move around to listen to the boss character's long message, the boss character might get angry and say, "Don't interrupt me! This would change the development of the event itself.

Aoki: Normally, when you get to the boss character, you would hear a long preface saying, "Welcome to the game. But in Chrono Trigger, the player can move during the event, so they can walk around while the boss is talking. In some scenes, if you don't want to listen to the boss, and you are strolling along, he may say, "Why don't you listen to me? and then suddenly enter a battle.

Tokita: Just by doing that, you can enjoy a different kind of event. When you are making a game by yourself, you think, "I want to show this part of the game" at every event. And the more elaborate the event is, the more times we play the game and check it. Sometimes I think the event is too long. But as a developer, even if the events are too long, you still want to show what you want to show. How can we make the most of both? The result was this Active Time Event Logic system.

Sakaguchi: It is also called ether. It is also called "ether," meaning "ether that heals the developer's emotional wounds.

Tokita, Aoki, Kitase: Not healing, not healing (laughs).

Sakaguchi: It has nothing to do with the ether of FF.

Tokita: It's hard for the creator to make a game with this ether system, because you don't know what will happen. You never know what will happen.

Sakaguchi: The development staff for this game consists of members who have worked on previous FF games. That's why we feel that Chrono Trigger is the next generation of FF.

Kitase: I had a lot of arguments with Yuji Horii about whether the main character should "talk" or "not talk" (laughs). Within Square, there were two opinions: one was that the main character should not speak, and the other was that he should speak.　In the end, we decided to make a game in which the main character does not speak, but the moment we decided that the main character would not speak, the way we created events changed.

Aoki: The main character doesn't have to speak. The atmosphere of the game is different from the past RPGs.

Tokita: I think there is a different feeling whether the main character speaks or not. If the main character speaks, that alone defines the character's personality.

Aoki: This makes the players like or dislike the main character. On the other hand, if you make the main character too strong, players will not like him. So until now, the main character could only say rather innocuous things. Considering this, there are of course advantages to not having the main character speak.

Kitase: It is true that the main character does not speak, which makes it easier for the player to get into the game. This system made me think about it.

Aoki: The fact that the main character doesn't speak, and the introduction of the ether system I mentioned earlier, should make it easier for players to feel emotionally involved with the characters in Chrono Trigger than in most RPGs.

Kitase: For battles, we were trying to decide whether it would be better to have the music change suddenly as you walk on the field and enter a battle like in the FF series, or to have the enemies always visible on the screen and enter a battle with quiet music without switching screens when they come into contact with each other. We actually went through a trial-and-error process to determine which was better.

Tokita: It was quite strange to enter a battle without switching screens, which is quite different from conventional games.

Aoki: By introducing this system, we handmade hundreds of different effects, such as vines wrapping around your legs when you are walking, or an enemy hiding in the bushes suddenly appearing in front of you, and so on.　So, I think that the game can be made to be as exciting as an event, with all the different effects that are prepared. This battle system is a lot of work for the game creators. But the good thing about this system is that you can surprise the audience in a different way each time.

Tokita: I feel that we need to spend as much time as we do on the events, and we need to come up with new ideas until our brains are exhausted.

Aoki: There are many different types of mechanisms, such as a battle that occurs when the main character's body hits a certain statue, or when he steps on a certain floor, an enemy will appear. This is something you can only experience with this battle system. The more visible the enemy is, the more tricks are available. And the enemies are not always where the player can see them. For example, a bat may suddenly fly out of an open window of a building in front of you and suddenly start a battle.

Tokita: And even roaming monsters have a field of vision, and when they see the main character, some of them come closer.

Sakaguchi: But in some places, if you avoid the zakos, you can meet the boss character right away.

Kitase: You can enjoy the various types of battle entrances and the way they are staged when you enter a battle. You can also enjoy the appearance of the game.

Aoki: In the FF series, you don't see the enemy when you are walking, and you don't know what he looks like until you enter the battle scene. In this game, however, the battle system allows you to know the character of the enemy even if you don't fight with him. Depending on the appearance of the monster, you may be able to enter the battle with some idea of the enemy's personality, such as whether he is a cool guy or a weird guy.

Tokita: I think the key to creating Chrono Trigger is to know where and how the battle will take place.　We also put a lot of effort into the graphics. We are the first company to have a 32 megabyte game, and if you think about it, you could fit four FF4 games in there (laughs). (laughs) In other words, we have to do four times as much work.

Sakaguchi: At first, we planned to make a 24-megapixel game. But when it comes to a time-traveling RPG, we wanted the people's clothes to change with the times, the towns to change, and so on.　Even the fixtures, such as clocks, are carefully drawn. That is why we decided to change the size of the game from 24 to 32 megabytes.

Tokita: The person in charge of the graphics drew the clock I mentioned earlier all the way until someone stopped it. I think the graphics were close to the limit of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). The graphics are so amazing that I think they are close to the limits of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

Sakaguchi: I thought it would be possible to create an interesting story by using a time travel trick, such as planting a seed in the Middle Ages and returning to the present day to find that the flower had bloomed.　I thought that by using such a trick using time, I could create an interesting story.　Mr. Horii is a man of few words, but I thought he is a man who observes his audience very carefully. He observes the other person, doesn't he? I didn't realize until I met him that he was applying this observation to his own drama making, but now that we are working together, I have a feeling that he is using it. I felt this when I got to work with him this time. We are in the same line of work, so it was not a real fight, but we had many conflicts about what we wanted to do and what we wanted to do when we were making the game. We were able to think deeply about the game through this process, so I think it was good that we clashed with each other. Mr. Horii was always concerned about things that we usually don't pay much attention to. It made me think that if Mr. Horii is so particular about such things, then that's what the users are looking at, and so on. Basically, we always have the same ideas, but the elements we look for are slightly different from each other. In the advertising of Chrono Trigger, the names of Yuji Horii, the creator of Dracula, and Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of FF, are often used to promote the game. However, the people who are making the game are not really aware of this.　There must be something interesting out there, so let's just take the time to create it without cutting corners. I felt the same way as Mr. Horii. This feeling is not only held by me, but also by Square itself.　Of course, I made Chrono Trigger together with Mr. Horii with that kind of feeling.

Matsui: The command battle without switching battle screens was adopted for this game. In this case, it was decided to abandon such a method, which is fine, but there are some things that cannot be discarded. For example, if you want to display a map, it takes up two screens, so you can't use the BG for the magic effects. Higuchi: Whenever I get an idea, I try it out, and if it's boring, I just cut it down. If it's boring, I just cut it out. If it's not interesting to the users, it's no good. If the game is not interesting and we put it in as is, it is just the ego of the planner or the developer. If it was boring, I would cut it off immediately.

Matsui: There were a lot of projects that we stopped after they had started working. We would make something for the time being, see it in action, and then say, "It's boring after all. Changes like that happen all the time. This time, there were so many changes that I don't know what's going on. The programmers are crying. But I have a feeling that we were greedy and packed a lot into this game. I think we were greedy and crammed a lot into this game. In other games, you would have thrown away a lot of things at the beginning, but I think we piled up a lot of heavy things and worked hard.　I think you can feel that there is such a large amount of stuff in the game.

Matsui: The music was a lot of work.

Mitsuda: At first we had about 48 songs, but suddenly we had a lot of capacity, so we had 20 to 30 songs. That was in September, and we had three months left. So we had 30 songs, and it was like making a whole film.

Kamata: The pendulum in the opening scene was drawn using computer graphics, the kind of 3D tools that are popular these days for Donkey Kong and other games. Well, since people are starting to think about next-generation consoles, I thought I would start using such computer graphics and 3D tools for a small portion of the graphics. It looks different from hand-drawn graphics, doesn't it?

KATO: Do you use FFVI?

Kamata: FFVI, you know, I heard they used it casually for magic effects. But basically, I don't use it.　But, after all, I am studying computer graphics and the kind of technology used to create computer graphics, such as in the recent movie Terminator, so Square has been using it a lot recently. We are also using it a lot at Square these days, for example, for capturing. We are trying to use some of the texture mapping techniques originally used in computer graphics. In fact, in this case, we are trying to take a texture-mapped image, change the three-dimensionality a little, and paste it together, and then use it in the actual picture. Basically, I wanted the warmth of the hand-drawn images, so I didn't want to use them in a way that would be too obvious. However, I did not want to use them in a way that would be too obvious, but I did use them in a way that was okay, because it would give a sense of liveliness if some of the pictures were incorporated into the work.

KATO: That was quite a controversy this time. Kato: There was a lot of controversy this time around about whether or not to use the capturing function.

Kabata: The incorporation itself is not important. It's just that the fact that it was the only thing that stood out was problematic, and it was not important in terms of technique. It is not a question of which is better, so I think we should use different methods depending on the situation. In reality, however, it is not possible to use them even if they are drawn by an indie company. The resolution is different. Even if you draw on a Macintosh, a picture of about 3 cm square fills an entire screen. Well, I try to use technology as casually as possible.




[Development at Square]

Higuchi: I don't like to say this, but Square's way of doing things seems to be different from other companies. In other companies, the planners don't work with much data. Our planners are very good, and even programmers work on the data. Recently, people without such skills are coming into the company, but how can we make those who come in without skills useful?

KATO: I think about that in particular. Basically, Square's planning is very software-oriented, so unless you have a certain amount of experience with Basic or C language as a hobby, you will be in a difficult position if you are just an idea man who comes in out of the blue.

Higuchi: Other companies may be different, but at our company, if you can't do data, you can't plan. It is rare for a newcomer to join the planning department. Even if you are a mid-career employee, it is a very difficult company at first if you don't have the necessary skills. Those who don't study will fall behind and end up doing nothing but subcontract work, which is all they can do. Programmers are not hired unless they have the skills from the beginning, so they are not hired unless they have a certain level of skills.　What about painters?

Kabata: For painters, well, only those who are good from the beginning are hired.

Higuchi: Oh, I see.

Matsui: This is a difficult point, but for me, it is frustrating when ideas are not converted into data. I don't think my job is to come up with ideas, but to turn ideas into data. Otherwise, for example, if a programmer says it cannot be done, it cannot be done, or if another project says how to do it, nothing can be done. So it is a loss for those who have ideas if they are not familiar with such data. If you have to ask someone else to do the actual data creation, even if each member says that he or she has brought out his or her best, in the end, the person who actually does the work will take the credit for the work. That is why it is better to be able to create data. Tools are becoming more and more powerful, and in that sense, you don't need to be as knowledgeable as you used to be. I have no artistic ability, so I am very envious of people in planning who can draw. There are opportunities for such people. On the other hand, there are people in the graphic arts field as well, and I don't want to use the term "true graphic artists," but there are those who say all they really need to do is draw pictures, while there are also those who take care of the process of converting pictures into data. However, I think it is better to be able to create data for a project.

Higuchi: Well, of course there was a time when programmers only needed to write programs, but for example, for business programmers, it is 100% OK if they receive specifications and program according to them. For example, a programmer in the business field, if he/she receives specifications and programs according to them, that is 100% OK. However, a game programmer must have an awareness of how to make the game interesting with his/her own hands.　It is difficult for a person who is not able to make such decisions. Just as the planner knows a little about programming and graphics, the programmer should not just make the game according to the planner's instructions. It is no good if the programmer does not have the sense of making the game interesting with his/her own hands.

Matsui: It's called data work, but it's something that can be learned in a year, as long as you have the motivation and drive.

Higuchi: But there are some people who just want to join Square.

Kamata: I wonder if they feel at ease. It's hard work after you get in, whether it's graphics or anything else. There really aren't any poor graphic designers in our company. It's no surprise, of course. I think that no matter what company you go to, you can be a graphic chief.　I don't think it would be interesting. From that point on, I think it is a really hard struggle.

Matsui: In terms of power of voice, the planning team does not have the most say, and the programmers who are in charge of the main part of the game have a tremendous amount of say. Even in the case of graphics, the person who draws the concept may have more say than the person who does the planning. When you think about it this way, our company is not so bound by the type of work.

Higuchi: But I think it is a very difficult company for programmers. After all, the people in charge of planning know everything. If they think it's too much trouble, they will say they can't do it if they don't know anything about the project. But in our case, I can't say we can't do it because they know. It's a pain in the ass, but I can do it (laughs). There is no way to dodge it, so I say, "Okay, I'll give it a try.

[Capacity]

Kamata: The initial capacity was 24M, but in the last half year or so, it suddenly increased by 8M. The increase was not in the program, but rather in the music, pictures, and foliage, and suddenly the capacity of the pictures simply doubled.

Matsui: When you increase some part, you end up increasing some other part. For example, if a dungeon that had been drawn with the same pictures until now is now a water dungeon and a fire dungeon, we have to make a fire dungeon, whereas before we only needed water objects. In the same way, any increase in capacity will eventually affect the entire dungeon. And if the capacity is increased, we have to do something about the amount of work that has been cut out in other areas.

Kato: Most of it is pictures. Also, scenario events and messages.

Kabata: I think about 6M of the 8M is pictures.

Kato: We couldn't fit 24 meters, so we had to force it in. Kato: We couldn't fit it in the 24M, so we had to force it in. But in the end, it overflowed. And the scenarios were pretty much overflowing. We were able to do the Demon King's Castle because they decided to add 8M to the budget, and they were very generous.

Kamata: It's just a picture, isn't it?

Kato: That kind of thing can't be used elsewhere, can it? Kato: Well, you can use them if you want.　For example, you could use it only for the month of March. When you start planning a project, you tend to be a bit stingy, so you can't make a scene like that. But in that sense, it was a good thing that 8M was used at that point.

Matsui: I would never have been able to do that at the beginning. It would pale in comparison to the capacity.

Kamata: Originally, the scenario itself was a very big bath. Therefore, the amount of data that would maintain the current quality would never have fit in the original 24M. So there was a lot of reusing, and we just couldn't make that kind of fancy part. It was all I could do to follow the scenario. So, with the extra 8M, I decided to add more and more flashy scenes like that. Like a demonstration.　But at first, I was afraid to use the courtroom and that kind of thing. If something goes wrong, I can't just cut it down a little. When there is no capacity, we are too scared to take out all that kind of thing.

Matsui: The court also decided to put in 8 meters. Conversely, they decided to put in more of that kind of thing, so they decided to increase the capacity by 8M.

Kato: I mean, the court was there from the beginning. From the very beginning, there was a story about "Crono was captured in the Middle Ages and held a witch trial. But because they didn't fit in the 24M, they were all cut off. Then, in the summer and fall, we decided to make the picture stronger, so we decided to make more demonstrative parts. They wanted to make the court and the huge airship "Kurotori-go" (Black Swan), which they had cut out. We decided to revisit those and make them more flamboyant, and we were able to do them all at once.

Higuchi: Most of the increase was for the demo, wasn't it?

Matsui: Yes, almost all of it. There was no point in being stingy with what we had. I think people want to know what kind of game it is, and I think we need to show them the best.　It is important to have the game played on store shelves.

Kabata: The real interesting part is what happens when the game is played before and after the game.　If it is just an eye-catching picture, it is fine for now. That's what makes it different from a game.

Matsui: What was difficult was the large volume and the large number of people. My first game was FFIV, which was 8M, and the next one, V, was 16M. The next one, Romasaga, was 16M, and this one went from 24M to 3.2M. The next one was 16M, and then Romasaga was 16M. We have already made a product with four times the capacity of the first one, but it is not as if the production process itself has become four times more efficient. I think that this was a bit apparent in the early stages of the project. So, I think that it is important to consider what kind of final product you are going to make and how it will turn out, as well as the people at the top. I think it would be different if the capacity were larger, and mechanization might progress further, but I think we were just in the transitional period and it was very difficult. The specific work I did was the usual work, or the kind of work that can be done if you think about it and do it this way. I thought about how to plan and create work first, and how to create work efficiently by inputting data, and how difficult it would be if I neglected to do so.
