Title: AIM/MSN/Yahoo/IRC Chat
Post by: V_Translanka on February 19, 2009, 02:14:19 am
I've been thinking about this for a while, but until (POSSIBLY) a chat/shoutbox is implemented into the Compendium, I figure we could have group chats via one (or more than one) messenger chat (I know some people have already done this, but I figure we might as well make a thread for one)...

So, if you wanna be involved (& because I'm too lazy to check everyone's individual forum profile), leave your info in this chat...or, if you want me to add you anonymously, I suppose you can PM me (in MSN chats you can talk w/o people adding you)...

Now, with AIM I know you can just make a chat that anyone can get in as long as they know the name, right? So how about "Chrono Chat" or something? To enter, I've found that you can just right click on your own name, go to Chat->Buddy Chat and then change the name of the chat. That way you won't even have to add anyone on AIM, really (if you don't want)...

I only have AIM & MSN (I refuse to refer to it as "Windows Live Messenger") myself (they're the most popularly used, right?), but I guess someone else could set up a separate chat for one of the other messengers...

AIM: spr c001
(those are zer0s)
MSN: spr_c001@hotmail.com

EDIT: I found out recently that you can add Yahoo! names to w/e version of MSN I'm running...I currently have NO IDEA if adding a Yahoo! name to a group convo would work or not, but if you've got one you can at the very least chat with me, isn't that enough? Anyways, add your Yahoo! if you've got 'em and we can find out what works together I guess (I didn't intend for that to sound as gay as it sounds...>_>)...

Also, Ramsus just set up the IRC, which can be found over here - http://irc.chronocompendium.com/

http://irc.chronocompendium.com/help.html

NickServ and ChanServ are now set up with the IRC server. To register a name with NickServ, use the following command:

/msg NickServ REGISTER yourpassword youremail@address

From then on you can use "/msg NickServ identify yourpassword" after signing in with your nickname to maintain control over it.

A shoutbox would be fun, curious to see how that would be implemented here.

MSN has been bugging out a LOT recently. Random disconnects, messages don't get delivered, etc,. I'm pretty sure it's not just my internet, seeing as how most people I chat with have the same problems.
I'm having trouble setting up an AIM account (all the good names are taken), so I'm just sticking with MSN for now.

My MSN: ZephiraZ@live.com
AIM: ZephiraZ (Yay for unoriginality!)

Hmmm.... I've seen some websites that have sections of IRC put on their websites for people to use. Like the TTAdvance website: http://ttadvance.ca/login.php

I don't know how hard it would be to do that, but it's possible to have different sections of it for different projects, etc. and would definitely be better than a shoutbox.

Just a suggestion.

Anyway if anyone should feel the need or desire for whatever reason to get a hold of me outside the boards:

Last night was fun, but again, I'm like never on. I'd much prefer a shoutbox. This way if you don't do MSN or AIM, you can join in a conversation. If we did something like that, though, I think we should work it so that only registered users can use it, but guests can see it. That's just me rambling, though.

Not really. Visit the address in a web browser, type in a nickname, and try connecting until it works. I just added the DNS information, so it might be a bit flaky.

EDIT: To get an early look before the DNS updates take place, you can use http://irc.alarmblue.org/

You can also use your own IRC client if you want.

Nope not working any more, keeps disconnecting me as well.

Looks like my connection's been kind of spotty lately. My ISP isn't too great it seems, so I might have to find another connection to stick the IRC server on. If things fail, try again a few times in an hour or so, and it might be back.

As more people try to use it and I finish experimenting with servers and services, I'll line up some cheap dedicated hosting to move it to along with a few other things in a few months or so.

I noticed something interesting in the Status screen. Apparently, the max user amount is 3, which could be very bad if not resolved by the time the CE parteh happens. And considering this Xenor fellow is constantly idling there... that could be very very bad.
Title: Re: AIM/MSN/Yahoo/IRC Chat
Post by: Shinrin on April 24, 2009, 03:09:16 pm
The reason why people can't connect is because he has it where a max of 3 people can only connect to the server. me and Teaflower noticed this earlier today.

Quote
*** 3 3 Current local users: 3, Max: 3
*** 3 3 Current global users: 3, Max: 3

teaflower beat me to it. lol

Thanks for the feedback everyone. The current max user problem should be fixed now.

I noticed something interesting in the Status screen. Apparently, the max user amount is 3, which could be very bad if not resolved by the time the CE parteh happens. And considering this Xenor fellow is constantly idling there... that could be very very bad.

That's just the maximum number of users that have been online since the daemon was last started. The max number of connections/users is set to 100.

The real problem was that the max number of connections per IP address was set to 2, but the CGI script uses the server's IP address every time, so only 2 people could connect with it. I fixed this after Shinrin's PM made it apparent that somehow the number of users was being limited.

You don't need to PM him, he knows that some peopl can't connect. The IRC has some slight server issues, and Ramsus is working to fix it.

Sorry, but I'm actually a bit more out of the loop than you might expect. Part of it is being a workaholic with my job, and part of it is being in a completely different timezone than most of the users on the site.

So if you can, try to encourage people to post all their problems with the IRC server and also post back whenever they seem fixed. That way I can get everything working properly sooner.

Also, I need to PM Ramus about not being able to connect though an IRC client.

I can connect just fine using irssi, but I'm physically close to the server. If yourself and others can report all of their attempts with their own IRC clients, I'd appreciate it. I'm thinking there might be some routing issues.

NickServ and ChanServ are now set up with the IRC server. To register a name with NickServ, use the following command:

/msg NickServ REGISTER yourpassword youremail@address

From then on you can use "/msg NickServ identify yourpassword" after signing in with your nickname to maintain control over it.

I encourage people to go through and try some of these IRC clients (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Windows_Internet_Relay_Chat_clients) and report back on whether or not any of them are lightweight and easy to use.

So far, this one (http://www.dev0.de/products_0irc.html) looks pretty straightforward. If the CGI IRC client is a bit hard on your system, you might download and use that one instead.

Try starting it and typing /connect irc.chronocompendium.com 6669
After you do "/nick V" and identify yourself with NickServ, use "/join #compendium"

EDIT: 0irc needs the command "/server irc.chronocompendium.com 6669" to connect to the Compendium's IRC server.

You can also see the other channels with /list

I'm just amazed that you guys got your own server for this.

Don't be too impressed. It's custom-built Athlon64 machine sitting in my room running off my cable connection here in Korea. It's my local file and print server.

I just got a good deal on low-end dedicated hosting though, so that's where the IRC server will move later next month, as popularity and usage picks up.

I really wish that 2 things can happen with the IRC-

1. Nick characters are higher (cause 10 isn't enough for me)
2. Non Ops are given the right to kick. Z and Ramsus aren't around all the time and we get so many annoying people asking for the patch and other lame shit. TEH LETTRR IS FAEEKKKK!!!111 There is a way of getting the channel members to vote on a kick...  and to open up polls.

Anyway, I installed MSN again after not using it for a year. My name is:

And what if there weren't enough people in the room to meet the voting requirement, but there was a spammer/stalker that reeaallly needed to be kicked?
Best just to have OPs that can be trusted to uphold the rules without abusing the commands. Less complicated, more effective.

voting capacity would be a logarithmic function ratio to the whole of the amount of online users.

to put it more simply, if there were 6 people, then the amount to kick would be 3 (50%).  but if there were say, 15 users in the irc, then the need would be 5 (33.333%).  if there were 3 then there would need to be two (66.667%).

see where I am going?

Makes sense, but the big snag in your plan: The IRC is full of idle people. Such as tonight, there are 14 people online, but only four or five are really that active. So unless idle members are not included, you would not be able to get a complete vote. Again, the voting process would be too convoluted, too complicated, and too lengthy.

yes, it would be a bit complicated on the servers side...

...and yes, I know there is always a number of people idle...

...but its still an idea, and probably more reasonable considering the likelyhood of some asshole to come in and just /kick everyone with a general /kick function...

No random asshole can come in and /kick everyone, since only OPs have the ability to kick people. Again, only trusted members of the Compendium will be given OP status.

I was making my statement based off of this "idea", not the current status of the IRC.

As well as the fact it would take Ramsus to alter the server for that to happen anyways.

<Ramsus> I just had an awesome idea for a character.
<Laith> Have at it, Ramsus.
<Ramsus> His weapon is just a big log.
<Ramsus> He's just a big, stupid looking guy with an absurdly large log that he carries on his shoulder and swings at enemies.
<Laith> Hahaha. Could you imagine Magus with a log.
<Ramsus> But then he's actually really intelligent.
<Laith> His name would be Billy.
<V> sounds like an Ogier almost
<Ramsus> No, just Bob
<Ramsus> Something really plain.
<Laith> Bob for short.\
<V> i'd give him a few sacks of like giant ball bearings to throw
<V> or iron
<Laith> NO. Just a log.
<V> but if he's smart he'd go long range at some point
<Ramsus> He throws the log
<V> LMFAO
<Ramsus> Dashes toward the person, then grabs the log after it hits them.
<Laith> But we can consider giving him a belt loaded with Pokeballs.
<Ramsus> Chucks it like a spear.
<Ramsus> No
<Ramsus> He just has jeans and a wife-beater.
<Laith> Aw, come on. He could have like Loggor or some crap.
<V> Pokeballs filled with logs?
<Laith> Taco thunder log.
<V> he'd have one of those wood house capsules
<Ramsus> Why not just make a Pokemon hack...
<Ramsus> That replaces all the pokemon with twigs, logs, and other pieces of wood.
<V> lol
<Laith> That would be massively epic.
<V> how many different ones would there be??
<Ramsus> There really wouldn't be that many different looks.
<V> that'd get crazy
<Laith> There would be one with two twigs, one with three, and one with a twig and a leaf.
<Ramsus> Just pieces of wood with different faces.
<Ramsus> Maybe a sign or two.
<Ramsus> The winged animals would be leafy twigs.
<V> i bet you could get a bunch of people to design twig Pokemon
<Laith> Ha. Then you'd have to consider colors.
<Laith> The legendary logs could be like redwood logs.
<Laith> Gotta catch em all. All fourteen of em.
<V> instead of EXP you'd get Sunlight
<Ramsus> No, you'd get growth rings.
<Ramsus> You gained a ring!
<Laith> HAHHAHAHAHAH
<V> that sounds kinky
<Laith> added a double h effect.
<V> hah-ha!
<Laith> Your log has evolved into log with a leafy twig.
<Ramsus> Your log has evolved into a 4 by 4.
<Ramsus> Your 4 by 4 has evolved into a dinging room table.
<Laith> plywood.
<Ramsus> *dining
<V> yeah, their final forms would all be weaponry
<Laith> no, dinging is fine.
<V> or household items
<Laith> And the dark pokemon logs could evolve into caskets or wooded corpses.
<V> your Wood Shavings has evolved into Door Frame
<Ramsus> But no weapons, they're too cool.
<V> there could be a cane though, but it'd be like a curved old man cane
<Laith> HAHAHAHA. The legendary could be Log Cabin
<Ramsus> The ultimate Woodamon would be this...
<Ramsus> A block of wood.
<Ramsus> Just to be anti-climactic.
<Laith> Now you're making Digimon. I won't stand for that.
<V> no, it would float a little!
<Ramsus> The transformation sequence should be extremely slow and drawn out too.
<Ramsus> It'd simply be the rarest.
<Ramsus> What's a rare type of wood?
<Ramsus> That'd be why it's rare.
<V> maybe it could just be Petrified Wood?
<Ramsus> So basically, the anime would have kids throwing exploding balls full of giant blocks of wood or wooden furniture at each other.
<V> or would those be the fossil Pokemon?
<Laith> your starter pokemon would be treated wood.
<Ramsus> Or worse, fake wood.
<Ramsus> Your enemies can retort, "You've got no wood!"
<Laith> There would be that one jackass pokemon log that has the forest fire move.
<Ramsus> Wooden matches.
<V> No, they'd all be little miniature trees
<Laith> HAHAHAHAHA
<Ramsus> But their ultimate move self-destructs them.
<Laith> Use green leaf to put out the fire.
<V> ROT STATUS
<V> SHROOMS
<Ramsus> Your wood has become moldy!
<Ramsus> Your wood is on fire!
<Ramsus> Your wood has termites!
<V> drowning?
<Ramsus> Your wood is soaked.
* Shinrin (~Shinrin@c-69-244-13-151.hsd1.al.comcast.net) has joined #compendium
<V> lol
<Laith> You caught Wood.
<Laith> Your wood is frozen
<V> no, caught would have to be changed to "got"
<Laith> Your wood is sick.
<Ramsus> No, rotten.
<Ramsus> Your wood is rotten.
<Laith> HA.
<Laith> Sorry bout all this, Shinrin.
<Laith> We're perverts.
<V> there are tree diseases, but idk any specific names
<Ramsus> Healing items would be wood finish and plaster.
<Laith> We like wood... and there's no stopping Ramsus when he gets going.
<Shinrin> you guys are perverts 24/7
<Laith> Oh yeah.
<Laith> It's like we all have wood.
<Laith> Mine may evolve soon.
<Ramsus> I got them turning Pokemon into a game where you catch and battle blocks of wood.

There, I fixed some issues with guest users being able to use the same name at the same time, and I added support for special smilies (see if you can figure out how to use them).

I also added system messages for when people join/leave the chat.

EDIT: The new web chat room should be completely stable now, and the code has been drastically cleaned up and rewritten for extensibility. From here on out, it's all about adding new features.

Ive had problems on firefox.

Personally, it seems to me FF loads slower.

and other than this webchat fluke, I have no regrets of using IE

Hey there,

when i first heard the IRC here was dying, i made a sister channel, and now its the unofficial IRC for here, with the webchat being the "official" chat...

irc.ircdotnet.net
#compendium (which will redirect to #chronopolis)

or www.ircdotnet.net

first link will give you a live chat.

-kando

I'm putting this here so people can actually find it...idk why kando decided to put it in the Site Maintenance thread, but w/e...It seems okay despite the not-very-Compendium Google ad up top...>_>

Site maintenance is mostly complete -- feel free to make full use of all the online portions of the site.

However, expect all of the chat services to be down for another few weeks. If you have alternative chat services to offer for the interim, feel free to post them as a reply. I'll add them to a list of alternatives for the chat page.
hate to sound the role of a smartass but he probably posted it there because of what ramsus said in this post.

Anyone have a link to that unofficial IRC that was made a while ago?

I don't remember too much about it, but it was for the compendium, but it wasn't an official channel.

I hate to revive a dead post but is there an IRC for Chrono Compendium? If not, it's easily made depending on what IRC server you want to use to host it on. If one was made and everyone was given the alternative of a web irc (mibbit) or downloading the actual program itself - would anyone use it?

Let me know.

They had some kind of chat at one point, but it hasn't been used in over a year.

I would probably use it, if it was started again.

Since I've returned from Korea, there's actually been a new Compendium IRC server up and running, but I haven't done anything with it yet. Instead, I'm working on some other projects.

If there's enough interest, I'll put the information up here, but be warned, there's no services or anything set up yet. As such, anyone can pretend to be anyone and do whatever they want without any ops or admins getting in the way.

EDIT: What the hell. Here: http://chat.chronocompendium.com/

If you want to use your own client, the server is either chat.chronocompendium.com or irc.chronocompendium.com. Both point to the same place.

You can just click IRC Chat in the navigation menu to the left of the site. It'll open up an easy to use CGI IRC client in a new window.

Not for the last few weeks. I'm having to set it up again on some different hosting once I finish selling all my belongings on eBay. It'll be back in a few weeks.

If your guys still have this idea in mind, what about Discord?

http://discordapp.com

I used this on my former Chrono project as a chat section, have a connect widget ready to put in the forums, and the best: it is basically a mix of IRC and Raidcall.

If anyone needs help, i will be glad to answer

Its funny but the only Discord I'm on is for a dead gaming social networking site, Playfire (which I guess didn't die so much as got eaten up by Green Man Gaming, which I just never joined). I was on the OCR Discord, but then I clicked on some stuff and I didn't know what I was doing so I left the channel...>_<
