Mammon Machine

The Masamune is plunged into the Mammon Machine

General Information[edit]

For boss information, see Mammon Machine (Monster).

Chrono Trigger[edit]

Full Name: Mammon Machine
Japanese Name: まじんき Demon Machine
Age: One to two years
Species: Not applicable
Home Time: 12000 B.C.
Home Area: Zeal Palace

The Mammon Machine was designed and built by Melchior to extract immense quantities of energy from Lavos. It was stationed in Zeal Palace upon its completion. Melchior also made a Pendant for Schala to control the machine with, and others constructed sealed doors that could only be opened with Mammon energy. Schala and the three Gurus were said to be the only ones capable of working with the Mammon Machine, though Janus probably could as well (but refused by hiding his magic ability). The initial activation of the Mammon Machine was said to have corrupted Queen Zeal "almost overnight," leading to her fixation with Lavos. Further research revealed that human immortality could be achieved in the event that the Mammon Machine were moved to an Ocean Palace in order to get closer to Lavos. The Gurus expressed fears over this plan, though the Queen decided to go ahead. The resulting move and activation caused the Ocean Palace Incident, and scattered the Gurus across time. In the Keystone Timelines, Melchior gave Crono the Ruby Knife in order to stop the Incident, but plunging it into the machine had no effect. Later, it would appear in the Black Omen as a boss that harnessed energy.

Chrono Cross[edit]

It is noted that the Mammon Machine existed briefly in the Darkness Beyond Time when Schala was first pulled in to bind with Lavos to create the Time Devourer.

Radical Dreamers[edit]

Notes on the Frozen Flame being used in Zeal raise the possibility that it was used with the Mammon Machine.

Theory and Analysis[edit]

Name Origin[edit]

The Mammon Machine's name is derived from the Hebrew word for "sin" indicating the malevolent nature of its power.
