Exactly.

My point is, based on recent trends as well as statements from Square Enix producers, the only thing we're likely to see from Square for the next several years are Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts games. Maybe the odd action game. Certainly no original JRPG IPs--you can bet on that.

Square suffered (and continues to suffer) massive losses on FFXIV as well as Versus' indefinite development cycle (funny how other, more talented developers are rushed to release a product while Tetsuya Nomura can take as much time as he damn well pleases), and for this Square hopes to make up for lost time by getting as much use out of their crystal tools engine as they can. Hence why FFXIII-2 is coming out so quickly: the engine is there, the assets are there--they'll spend less than half the resources and time developing a game which will probably sell a good percentage of what FFXIII did.

And they'll keep doing it--along with churning out spinoff Final Fantasy titles (especially for mobile systems)--until they're financially secure.

Their Eidos properties will serve them well, but it's just a way to bolster their Western presence. It won't affect their RPG development. And to appeal further to Western gamers, they've even sacrificed some of their traditionally RPG-oriented IPs to the action genre such as Front Mission, a series from which we will probably never see another tactical RPG even though tactical role-playing is the whole point of Front Mission.

Any non-FF or non-Kingdom Hearts titles in the JRPG genre from Square will be outsourced to other developers and published by Square. Mark my words.

They're going to sell basically crap until someone more clueful ends up in charge, or they split up/implode, whichever. Same problem as Hollywood: they're not willing to make stuff that they don't believe will make them a huge amount of money, the key words being "believe" and "huge". Modest returns aren't enough for them anymore. They've become risk-averse.

Well, guess I was partially wrong. Square is developing a new engine with a particular Western influence. Perhaps Crystal Tools was found to be too cumbersome and resource-intensive...

At some point, S/E is going to recognize the grim reality that in spite of their short-term profits they will have lost a great deal of market-share as a game developer.  At that point they will make a fateful choice:

1. New leadership will get back to basics and begin refocusing on old franchises and presenting them in new and innovative ways across multiple platforms with an aggressive marketing campaign.

2. Square/Enix will get out of the game development business and focus on becoming a larger publishing conglomerate to compete with Electronic Arts, selling the rights of their gaming franchises to third-party developers under their corporate umbrella.

(One of these choices is much more likely than the other.  Guess which one.)

Whatever ultimately happens, it's unlikely that Chrono Trigger will fade into the mists of time.  The game is on console networks now, and more people seem to be taking notice of it.  A remake is going to happen.  A sequel to that remake is also likely if the remake is any good.  Will it happen quickly?  No.  I'm guessing it will be at least five years before developers begin to seriously consider the prospect, and 3 - 5 years after that before we see an actual game - assuming a typical AAA development cycle (and assuming that AAA games are being made at all by that time).  Until then, we fans have to keep the home fires burning to maintain interest in the franchise.

More to the point on the subject of Chrono Break, it is unlikely in the extreme that we will see it as opposed to a remake of Chrono Trigger.  For one thing, it's been 12 years since the release of Chrono Cross, and that game is not nearly as well known by current generation gamers as Chrono Trigger is.  Combine that fact with the uneven (and frankly unfinished) plot of Chrono Cross, and there's just no way that "Break" is going to happen.  Cross, while beautiful in its own way, was too flawed as a sequel to Trigger to be a good foundation for a second sequel.  They have to start over.  Chrono Cross has to be rethought and rewritten - and focused on a much smaller cast of core characters.  Chrono Trigger needs to be expanded upon to more effectively lead in to the events of Cross.  Only then can a Chrono Break make creative (and financial) sense to make, assuming a third installment is even necessary with a proper rewrite of Cross.  Myself, I don't envision separate installments at all if it's done right, but that's a subject for a different thread.

Their crystal tool engine was a mistake too. It cost them way too much money. As you say, they'll have to use it a lot to have a return on their investment.

Square screwed up a little with FFXIII. Not in Japan, where the game was successful, but in the rest of the world, where the constant linearity was not well received. And if they screwed up with FFXIII, they shot themselves in the foot with FFXIV. By rushing the game because of WoW : cataclysm's release date, they released a bad final fantasy. Yes, a main final fantasy that bombed, the first one in history. I don't know exactly what happened, but I don't think it's Tanaka's fault. He was probably crunch-timed by Wada for half a year. Tanaka was fired from the team. Why is he still at S-E ? Well, that may be a good thing for us, because he was the producer for Chrono Cross. It's not impossible that Chrono Break is in pre-production right now. Remember when the Chrono team was stuck on FFXI ?

Square should revisit their old ATB system and expand it, imho. Trying to be too innovative while ignoring fun factor and exploration could result in IP extinction.

I think Tanaka just needs to go to Monolith Soft. We might not get Chrono Break, but we'd maybe get Chronogears, or Chronoblade.

We have a Chronoblade. :P It's totally unrelated to either game, unfortunately.
