Chrono references in Scott Pilgrim
« on: April 05, 2011, 11:18:58 pm »
I recently got into Scott Pilgrim, both the comics and the movie (the graphic style is so my kind of style... :P ). For those who  haven't heard about it,  Scott Pilgrim is a graphic novel about a 23 years old hipster gamer living in toronto, and his own world seems to work like a videogame at times. The story is littered with call-outs and references to many many videogames, specially retro games. Now, I decided to share it here because there are a couple of references to Chrono Trigger  8) :

In the volume 3: Scott Pilgrim and the Infinite Sadness, Scott falls asleep standing up in the rain and his friend Wallace wakes him up...

In the last volume: Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour, Scott and Ramona final attack is Crono and Frog's X strike!  :D

Also, the author, Brian Lee O’Malley, made this cute fanart of Lucca  :)

Sorry if someone already posted about this  :P If someone is curious here is a more complete list of references that could be find in the comics, including other games.

After my boyfriend and I saw the movie we went to a restaurant.  While we were paying, a guy came up to us and asked us if we had seen Scott Pilgrim.  We said yes (we had JUST watched it an hour and a half ago), and the guy said "Oh cool.  I just wanted to tell you two that you look like the two main characters."  It was my pink hair that did it, I'm sure.  :P

Holy shit I never put that together and I love Scott Pilgrim! And D TOTALLY looks like Michael Cera ... not like a physical copy, but they look like they'd have really similar personalities if they met in person. Like if a movie was made about him, that's who they'd cast. That's what I mean! I'm having trouble being articulate at the moment, still fresh off the work clock.

Licawolf, I love this topic and am probably going to rewatch the movie for the umpteenth time and try to find anything remotely Chrono in there.

Actually, maybe Gideon's sword... the vividly colorful pixellated katana he pulls out of nowhere before starting to fight...

I think that actually in the Scott Pilgrim videogame Gideon does have an  attack called X-slash with that katana....

I wish Square Enix would have allowed them to use some sound effects and music from Chrono trigger in the movie, like nintendo did with all those Zelda ALttP sound effects  :(

Also I heard that the author is also fan of Chrono Cross, I have been trying to find some references in the comics. Found nothing yet  :P

EDIT:

Um, maybe... xD

I've wanted so much to read these comics. It's too bad none of those Chrono references made it into the movie (as far I as can remember).

You could probably argue that the school Ramona went to, University of Carolina in the Sky, is a Mt. Woe reference

I think it is, it may even be kind of a Mt.Woe/Zeal combination. A chained floating island, instead of a chained floating mountain.

For the sake of keeping all the possible references here, a comparative image:
