Cards as Weapon
« on: April 28, 2010, 12:56:50 am »
I just want to know, who created this idea?
I recall I saw that in some old Hongkong movies, but I'm not sure whether there're something older.

I know it's a common theme in super hero themed comics as well. (Gambit, Bullseye, Joker...etc.) The earliest trace of this I can see is in some Batman comics from the 1950s. I can't say for sure if Joker was using cards in his earlier appearances though. (lates 30s-40s.)

I think it's just a neat visual.

A card can be a (somewhat) useful means of distracting your opponent in combat, but as a weapon...

Well...

Paper-cut.  That's as good as you're gonna get with one of those.

A blade card?  That's not a card.  That's just a rectangular throwing blade with a playing card imprint on it.

Unless you can channel some energy into the cards like Gambit can...

I'm surprised the cards don't burn up or vaporize.  I wonder what they're made of?  Hmm...

Put another way, cards areas useful as a range weapon as a Bat'Leth is as a melee weapon.

Well I'm going to get down right geeky and explain why Gambit's cards don't burn up. Despite the purple visual, Gambit is actually manipulating the kinetic energy of said playing card. So when he's "charging up" the cards, he's actually charging up the amount of energy they have on impact. That's when they'll burn up and explode.

Yet that doesn't explain why his outfit has so much pink in it nor why when any artist tries to get rid of said pink he just looks silly...

Well, he wouldn't be silly if he was developed a bit more with a human side and believable back-story.

That is, if the writers at Marvel can take five minute of their time NOT thinking about how they're going to fill 10 more pages (in their next issue) of Wolverine yelling at the sky and slashing through everything in his line of sight.  Seriously, he gets more attention than a teenage celebrity coming out of a drug episode.

Is it weird that I always name Setzer Gambit when I play FF6?

Fixed Dice are better than his (Setzer) cards though...His sprite reminds me of the Red Mage from FFI and thus reminds me of Red Mage from 8BT...HERE'S DICE IN YOUR EYE~!!

As for the silliness of Gambit...How can you possibly think someone with the self-appointed nickname of the "Ragin' Cajun" is silly!?...O_o
