Serj or Ser-gay?
« on: May 17, 2005, 03:54:04 pm »
Throughout my playing of CC I always assumed that the name was pronounced "Serj", but about a month ago my class started studying Russia in World Cultures, and the name Sergei/Sergey popped up (we had projects on 'Russian cultural heroes' and there were lots of Sergeis), pronounced like Ser-gay

I always assumed that it was Serj, and because I pronounced it in my head like that everytime I thought that the game did too, but they never speak the name..

So, which is it?

Yeah, that doesn't really seem like the way the Japanese language would work either...It's not a Russian game or a Russian translation's all I can say...

Ever since my mother saw a picture of Serge, and commented that he looks something like a French fisherman, I've been giving it somewhat of a French sound. Thus more Sair-dzh, but very smooth.

Yes, the name Sergey is Russian.
Personally, I know someone who's name is Sergey but people, including me, call him Serge (and none of them are aware of Radical Dreamers / Chrono Cross).
So the connection always seemed pretty obvious to me.
Though Serge isn't ment to be Russian or anything like that.... ;)

Actually, his name is pronounced as 'Serge' (the English word) and not as ser-geh (like Sergey, in Russian, without the y).

The name isn't meanningless in case you're wondering.

I always had it pegged for Sair-j with a softish J.  Seeing as how he DID remind me of a Frenchman, and as far as I know, the only language in which Serge is a real name is French and derivatives of French.

Hence I pronounce it the way you would in French.

I'd stick with the common english pronunciation. Its just easier that way.

[edited out french joke]

I dont see any real reason to not pronounce it unlike the english word.

The way i see it is serj, since i have a high romance-language influence, the letter G when with a soft vowel (e or i) always sounds like a J, never a G such as the G in Garden.

Serge = Serj ( in portuguese, spanish, french, italian, and english* )

*not a romance language
