Huh! I wonder if the real world "El Nido" inspired Kato in any way.

Otherwise, I'd suggest a place where history could have split in twain powerfully, due to some momentous event. Israel, Bavaria, Mecca - Saudi Arabia, an airport in New York City, even Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas.

You want a place where history could have been split in twain powerfully? Try Bellevue, Washington. Pretty much that whole city belongs to Microsoft. It's like they're trying to build Chronopolis. They already have Bing, which is supposed to make decisions for you (or so they've advertised), and last time I went down there they were still snatching up land and expanding.
Though to match the scenery and brutality, try Fiji islands.

I would place it in the Canaries. An archipelago with a climate close enough to El Nido's, and near to Europe, which is a plus, since Guardia and Porre have always sounded european to me.
