See y'all later!
« on: July 21, 2009, 12:48:59 am »
I've got a missionary trip to Kansas and Oklahoma to help some people who've been displaced by tornadoes this past year. To my knowledge, we'll be working in co-op with Habitats for Humanity, or some off-shoot of it.  I'll be offline starting tomorrow.

It's a non-proselytizing trip, just so you know, and I'll probably be back the week after next next week(EDIT: I misworded that).

Until then, guys!

At least you'll be doing something productive. Don't cut any corners.

Later, and thanks for your service. What are you doing exactly? Building houses, or is it something entirely different?

Some of us will be building houses, and others will be donating clothing and toys to children, FW.

You'd think that since humans are so great that we give easy-to-understand names to places with regularly occurring disasters (i.e. Tornado Alley) and even know the cycles of terrible weather enough to have a whole "Hurricane Season" that we'd choose to, like...not live in those places. I feel sorry for the pets of people that live in such dangerous geography.

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR MISSION.

Alright guys, I'm back from the mission trip. We managed to build five new houses on one residential street, and we donated somewhere around $3,000 in new toys and games to the children. We co-opted with Habitat on the houses, and a local charity called Debbie's Kids helped to donate a good amount of toys to the cause.

I worked on the houses until about halfway through the second day, when a cut on my hand and an old shoulder injury seemed to be acting up in unison. So I was switched over to helping with the kids. It's not that I don't like helping with kids, in fact it was a nice respite from the physical labor.

Well, anyway, everyone seems happy to be back. The next mission trip isn't until November, but I probably won't be going on that one due to college and whatnot.

That's about the entire experience. Glad to be back.

Truth, I'm curious as to whether you had on-site training when building the houses, or how that worked out. Do they have professionals come in and do the wiring and plumbing and stuff after the volunteer workers build the house frame, or do the volunteers take part in all phases of house production?

Sorry for being so late with my reply, FW, but it didn't seem to alert me when your new message was posted.

To answer your question, a few of our parishioners are certified contractors, and they handled the nuts and bolts of the more detailed labor, such as plumbing and wiring. I wasn't personally involved in that aspect so I can't say for sure how they handled it, but I do know that we had a few contractors from the area helping. When I was on-site, my main job was putting nails in wood and building the house frame itself.
