I received word of it from another player that I knew. More accurately, I saw my brother playing it at a really early point and, after trying my hand at it, decided I liked it. Forgot when this was-it was about five years ago, though, I'd suspect.

And, speaking of naming of characters... I've been naming Magus Janus ever since-My brother did that, so I suppose I sort of picked up on it from there. It wasn't until quite recently that I started naming Frog Glenn or Marle Nadia. Meh.

So, yeah.

The very first time I saw the game was when, my dad rented it and I watched it, I did not play it. I don't know how old I was then, but years later I played it on the computer with an emulator.

I was reading a game magazine looking hoping for squaresoft rpg in the spirit of secret of mana so I could play it with my neighbour.
It had an import usa review of this game.
As it turned out it wasn't multiplayer action like sd2 or even turn based
co-op like ff3/6 but the absorbing beautiful game we've all come to love.
-birds chirping-
I had to play it on a wild card as it was not released here untill "chronicles" came out a few years ago.

Yeah, it was released on the SNES in 95 or 96.  I've got the original cart, myself.

That's true, but was CT released everywhere on SNES? Plus, what does mondragon mean by 'wild card'?

*opens mouth, inserts foot*  That's what I get for not reading closely.  Yeah, I was thinking the US release.

And I'm willing to bet a 'wild card' is a blank cartridge used to write roms to to play on the actual SNES, right?  Or am I way off base?

I think it's just something that allows NTSC games to be played on PAL Super Nintendos. So, your description might actually be right.

I saw it in Nintendo Power, Chrono Trigger and Earthbound were the first two (and for a long time the only two) RPG's I owned. We got the game on the release day and I have loved it ever since. I have all the 95' issues of Nintendo Power, its funny to read the articles because they got so many things wrong.

Chrono Trigger for the snes has never seen a pal release over here in Europe. Games like spawn and other licensed drivel made up the majority of releases.
That was of course to a certain degree the same for the US but you still got a couple of games we would have liked to get our hands on. Especially rpgs. (If we can just quietly forget about Terranigma for a second, which was a pretty decent Europe-only translation).
So no Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound or even Super Mario RPG.
Converters would allow you to play usa games on pal systems but I think it was due to power current differences that in a game with battery saves such as Final Fantasy 3 (6), those saves would sometimes mysteriously vanish (NOOOOoooooo).

And I'm afraid that with a wild card I was indeed referring to a blank cartridge. You could save to disk and it was cheap.
Cheap in more than one way of course.
Nowodays I like to make a point of owning the actual game.
But I was young with little money (importing was very, very expensive) but a big love of rpgs and quirky japanese puzzle games.
And it's not much of a defense but because I used it mainly to play non europe released games  (I did own actual games, like tetris attack but I liked it better as Panel de Pon same goes for Puyo Puyo over Kirby's Avalanche) it didn't do as much damage the companies and ...never mind I was wrong.
