Meeting yourself possible?
« on: June 13, 2009, 11:10:57 pm »
I know that in Chrono Cross that it was possible to have for example, the Van from the Real World meet the Van from the Alternate World, and it wouldn't create some sort of paradox or rip in the time-space dimension or whatever.

But what about in Chrono Trigger? What is your guys opinions on the idea?

Say... Frog in 602 AD. was brought back in time to 600 AD, would he meet his past self from two years ago or would one of them not be able to exist in that timeline, or do you think something bad would happen if they met? I just wanna know if you guys think there should be some principles or things I keep in mind before attempting something like this in my writings.

It's possible to go to the past and meet your past self. After doing it, it will take the amount of time you traveled to the past for Time Bastard to eliminate the past self.

For the Frog example, he goes back two years, and can meet his past self. Two years later, and the past self will get Time Bastarded, as it was the time the original Frog time traveled.

Now, depending on the situation, the impact on the new time line created by your time travel depends on what you did. It can be a small change like just having a little talk, or something big like making him do a differnet desicion of what you did.

Depending on the situation I would advise not doing the latter.

Yeah, I know it's a lot of information. But since one thing leads to the other and so on, I felt it was better to give the whole thing than just explain in pieces.

Goddddd. I'm still a bit confused.

So basically if I had Frog travel back in time to 600 AD and he didn't meet his past self -or if he did meet his past self but didn't do something very severe- he wouldn't be Time Bastard'd and disappear, but if he did something that really affected the timeline, he would disappear?

It's the past self who disappears, and it's regardless of what happens since the trigger is Frog's time traveling to the past. Once it's done, it's done. His past self is now a Time Bastard.

time travellers immunity/time bastard covers this, as others have said.

its important to note that magus (in the guise of the prophet) meets janus, his younger self.

Just gonna prove that you can meet your past self by pointing out Lucca's Red Gate.

And let's not forget when they use the Time Egg, and you bring any of the party members who were there.

True, time is frozen there, but it's the same thing anyway.
