The guy with rags looked hilarious.

Seriously though, consider having the entire garment stem from some really elaborate headgear. Everything somehow connects to the headpiece.

That's Bruno. It's another Sacha Baron Cohen character, an Austrian fashion designer. Same guy who created/was Borat.

I kinda agree. I have seen some cool clothes get screwed up with a bad hat.

To address the original issue:

don't.

Seriously, keep it simple. You can't get much simpler than a toga, and if you want a step up, jumpsuits, pants, and shirt are all so simple that any vaguely intelligent cloth-wearing humanoid species would use something like them. Don't let this happen to you('re aliens):

I like the headpiece-clothes thing...

...but the way I see that one happening is a more royalty-style outfit...

a pincessy headband with semi-transparant clothing coming down from the back to dress her in a robe... (of COURSE there would be more non-see through clothes underneath >.> pervs.)

Phwee! Glad you like the idea! Hmm...for non-royalty I guess it could come from a necklace of some sort, but it you're going for something completely different from what humans do, that won't really cut the mustard. Non-royals could just have really plain hats or something.

Maybe a shirt could just be gloves that met at the shoulders to cover the front, and expose the back, and pants could be boots that come all the way up? Don't think "different than any human", rather think "a different way than any human"

By that I mean, think of what parts of society are going to be similar and different. What would they have come up with? Are they more primal, technological, aesthetic, philosophical, industrial, or something else? That would dictate what kind of thing they could use as clothing.

Belts.

And zippers.

Just everywhere. Like freakin' Vash the Stampede. Belts, zippers, buttons, clasps, capes, and knee-high boots with a million buckles on top of the laces.

Androgynous clothing:

But if you actually do consider a skirt, go for Utilikilts. They're awesome, and have lots of pockets!
