Touch-screen functionality in CC would be beautiful. What JinTypeNoir said seems reasonable--I suppose my misconception stemmed from the fact that Playstation emulation on the DS isn't as feasible. And if the DS's hardware and everything could [eventually] handle CC, then I suppose the only possible problem would be Sony bitching about it, right? Have we seen any Playstation games ported to the DS? Aside from the many re-releases of the earlier FFs (and by extension Chrono Trigger on Final Fantasy Chronicles), I can't think of any games that have crossed from Playstation to Nintendo hand-helds...And even the ones I mentioned are ports of older SNES games...

Disgaea was ported from the PS2 to the DS. I'm not sure what Sony could do to stop such a port; they don't own most of the games that are released on their systems.

Ah, thanks for that example. Wasn't Disgaea also ported to the PSP as well? I think the DS port came out a year later, but nonetheless it's pretty decent evidence that Sony doesn't have any sort of embargo on its games...

Embargo on its games? What does that mean? Most games that get released on a particular system are not owned by the company that produces the system.

Right, right, they don't own the game, but don't certain companies get exclusive rights to games when they're made? Honestly, I have no idea about this--if it wasn't already apparent--I just expected there to be some reason that we don't see as many  games that were formerly on Sony systems appearing on Nintendo systems.

I think you are confused about the roles different companies play in the game industry. It likely doesn't help that the platform companies (Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft) also develop and publish.

Of course, there's always the simpler point that there may not be a business case for making a port at a given time. Regardless of the target platform, S-E would have to spend money and time (which is also money) on making the port, testing it, advertisement, distribution, etc etc. It may simply not be worth it to them to do a port of CC to any platform at this time. It's also possible that they are doing it, but are keeping quiet for the time being.

That was a pretty bad port though. The graphics and sounds were drastically worse.

I thought it was ok, but I haven't played either of the other versions...

But I was asking if there were any examples of SQUARE porting a game that initially started on a Sony system onto a Nintendo one...Disgaea is not a Square-Enix game...

I was just going to jump in to defend the port, but I realized I only played the PSP version, completely nullifying the entire argument.

Are there any examples of S-E porting a game that was initially released on a Sony system at all?

If there isn't, it's not like that would be decisive evidence that Chrono Cross will never make it to the DS, or a Nintendo system. First time for everything. But I doubt there was never a SE game ported from Sony to another system. I don't have a list of all their games, neither have I been playing alot of their games, so I wouldn't know.

I don't know if this example qualifies, but FFXI was released on PS2 and then "ported" to the Xbox 360.

And if it doesn't qualify, there's FFXIII, which is being made for PS3 but with a port already planned for the Xbox 360.

I don't think Sony would make a fuss about Chrono Cross, especially since it's probably not as popular as the mainstream fancandy Final Fantasy.
'Mainstream fancandy'...  :) Sad but true! The series has kind of been diluted to a mainstream one these days... IX was the swan song as far as I'm concerned.

As for a Cross port on the DS, I'd love to see it, though there's probably a snowball's chance in hell of it happening. As cool a visual style as CC had, I wouldn't mind a graphic makeover... something along the lines of the FFIV port? How they'd fit the whole game onto a DS cart though, I don't know. Maybe if they chopped the cut scenes and gave it SNES style graphics, but I think that'd be way to drastic of a change for most. I'd welcome it, just to have the storyline on hand again.

I think it's technically possible (haven't played CC, but seen screens) because of the DS hardware's capabilities and the amount of data you can fit on flash memory these days, but it all depends on whether Square wants to do it. If CTDS does well (which i think it has/will; isn't it on course to sell a million by May?), that obviously increases the chances.

And that also seems to be the general consensus...

I'd rather have CC ported onto PSP where it could not only retain, but possibly ADD to content (I always thought it was SORELY lacking in FMVs for instance) rather than detract from it by trying to port it onto DS.
