CT DS more or less censored
« on: January 20, 2009, 09:05:59 pm »
I am just curious as I've heard the Japanese CT is less censored then the American ones recently and I am late into the series.

Fixed your topic title...and while I was at it did a spellcheck of your post as well, hope you don't mind...

Yeah, they changed quite a bit of the script in CTDS to more accurately reflect the original translation. I think this can be clearly seen in the new rating bump the game got (there's now alcohol references where there were once "soda" references). I still don't think the translation is as good as the Compendium's though and eagerly await the day when there's a CTDS Compendium retranslation.

I wish they'd kept CTDS' translation more faithful to the Japanese version. Some of the differences between both English versions (SNES and DS) and the Japanese version were kinda either un-necessary or were better off as the Japanese version.

uhm... do you guys think you could help me out a bit? I want to play CT for DS, but I dont have a DS and Im not sure which is the best emulator to use for it, or even if Im using the right plugins.

While we can't give ROMs or ROM links, emulators aren't illegal themselves as far as I know (?)...I use no$gba...but this is really something you should just Google instead of coming into a topic not about emulation to ask about it...>_>

P.S. You should buy CTDS!!

Eh, I'd help you if I could, but I know nothing about 'em...And I think the Compendium is a bit standoffish when it comes to helping people out with ROMs and emulators.

As for the topic at hand, American scripts (and the games themselves) are always censored heavily...especially if you look back to the SNES...no nudity, no drugs, no alcohol, nothing. The standards are less strict now, but Japan still gets an easier ride than the US does--but with CTDS I think they rectified a couple things, Toma's Pop became Sake, right? Other than that, I don't know...words like damn, bastard, and God tend to be as far as they'll go...and those don't appear anyway.

Now, if you were asking which translation is generally more accurate, it's gonna be the Japanese script. Always. The fact is that it's just too challenging to preserve eloquence, understandability, and necessity when translating.

Uh...The Japanese script wouldn't be a translation...>_>

I'm sorry if there was any confusion. I'm not asking for help in finding any roms, emulators or plug ins, I can find those well enough on my own, I was just wondering which would be best suited for the CT:DS game, and I am planning on buying it when I get the money, because I really do want to support the CT industry as much as possible. Not a big deal, I won't press the matter because I don't want to get anyone here in trouble by having them pass on information on this crap. Shouldn't have brought it up.

More on topic, Japanese games and movies have been less censored for a long time in terms of language and nudity, but I think FCC regulations have been dropping slowly since the old school SNES days. using the psx game Final Fantasy 7 as an example, they had bad language in there, though most of it was censored with symbols, but still more than what they did in the SNES, NES days. For a while now, game companies have been putting out games with strong offensive language and content: The Bards Tale for PS2 and Conkers Bad Fur Day as examples. Still haven't made that final leap to where all swear words are able to be used in the games, but I think we're getting close to it, as long as the games and movies are labeled correctly. I have no clue about CT:DS, though I am sure that if it had been light language, like damn or hell, they would have left those in there.

Yeah, back in the day religious connotations were also censored quite a bit. Many people point out the several names they changed "Holy" to in the FF series. Which is odd because some, like the Gurus' names in CT, were added...>_>

Which helped to show that Crono was Jesus (come on, he dies and is revived).

CTDS isn't really censored that much, if that's what you're getting at.

The SNES version was censored a bit, but honestly even the Japanese script didn't have that much that wouldn't slip by Nintendo's standards back then.  (Alcohol references, Ayla's bisexuality, the groping during the Rainbow Shell event, etc.)

Nothing that really takes away from the story, and all of it is preserved in the new trans.

Huh? I remember playing it FFVI for SNES, when it was final fantasy III, and I remember Maria, the Opera Singer, but she was always called Maria, not girl. You have me a bit confused, mate.

Oh, I mean a boss before Kefka.
It was translated as Lady in FF6A though.
