Didn't she do it because she partially wanted to?

"It was I, after all, who wished it-wished from the depths of my sadness and despair that all that was would be erased."

What Schala says after the Dream Devourer fight.  Plus, if I remember correctly, she says something similar in Chrono Cross.

Her Rei-like desire to turn everything into nothing came more from her guilt and despair that she caused the downfall of her kingdom, though I wouldn't put it past her to want to destroy it in the first place rather than have to stand up for what's right by herself for once.

Anyway, Dalton's cronies mention in Trigger that they hated working for him. This to me is definitive proof that Dalton couldn't get power on his own, unless the mayor of Porre really is that dense.

Not that I don't believe you, but could you show me the quote that lead you to believe this?  Her CTDS quote was the only thing I could find regarding the whole "turn everything into nothing" thing, but I'm almost positive she says something about that in Cross, but I can't find it.

EDIT:  What I mean is, could you show me what lead you to believe that her desire to turn everything into nothing came after being devoured by Lavos.

Her behavior in-game led me to believe she actually liked life and other people, and Radical Dreamers has this to say...

Quote from: From RD
Long ago, in a far off kingdom, lived a girl. Because of her power, the kingdom
had come to an end, crumbling under its own weight. Many became engulfed in the
temporal vortex that was created, never to be heard from again...
...But not the girl. She lived on, enduring a much sadder fate... Running from
her past and fearing her future, she wanted nothing more than to be swallowed
up in the surging waves of the vortex of time...
Hating what she'd done, refusing what she'd said or heard, to simply continue
living was her curse.

Meaning this attitude came after Zeal fell.

...However, I can't find proof in CT or CC, and I can't read Schala's thoughts or those of the creators. It's quite possible that CTDS retconned Schala from a weak-willed yet loving girl into a total queen of darkness from the get-go.

Well my reason for believing that she wanted to turn everything to nothing before merging with Lavos isn't to say that she was an evil person or anything.  I think it was more of a deep down in the bottom of her heart thought that came from depression, which can easily lead to such selfish thoughts.  Lavos merely brought that out in her when they merged and/or came in close contact (and I think a similar thing happened with Queen Zeal and her grief over the death of her husband and her greed).

I don't know whether the Time Devourer idea came from RD, the Mandora Monster...but Magil did suggest a Lavos host at a certain ending.
And the "Phantom Break" spell is interesting:

"Hatred and jealousy in my hands..."
"Gather into a thousand dark prayers..."

                  "The fallen angel, Arcmyst..."
"Answer my prayer, and grant me thy power..."

                  "Death to all living things..."
                  "Destruction to all creation..."

                        "Devour all light..."

Well in CC Lucca states:
   The true beginning was during
   the destruction of the ancient
   Kingdom of Zeal!
   As the palace collapsed around
   her, Princess Schala was sucked
   into a dimensional vortex along
   with the Lavos Mammon Machine.
   Schala and Lavos became unified
   into one even more powerful
   entity that would evolve into
   the Devourer of Time.
   Filled with the hatred and
   sadness of Lavos, half of
   Schala's mind became set on
   destroying all of existence.
Yet at the same time, the
   other half of her mind
   desired to save the universe
   and to be rescued herself.
It's a hefty quote, but I think it's kind of what you're looking for.

Well that's sort of contradictory isn't it? It's saying she got the desire to destroy the world from Lavos's influence, but in CTDS it seems like she wished for it herself, and that was what made Lavos able to bond with her in the first place.

Of course it could be a slight mistranslation.

It would make more sense with the DS stuff that Schala was the one who wanted everything to end, and when Lavos fused with her(to get more DNA..its what he does) and when he absorbed Schala's Magical Powers he got her Hatred, which lead to the Time Devourer, if someone other than Schala were in the DBT the TD would have likely sat there and done bupkis.

You could say that Schala was in a moment of utter and complete depression, so much so that she did indeed wish ill to the world. Lavos simply granted her the ability yo fulfill that wish. With Schala's depression, anger, and intense emotion, Lavos was able to become DD and eventually TD.

It makes sense. While Lavos didn't exactly merge with Queen Zeal, he still managed to influence her into becoming the dark harbinger of death in 12,000 B.C., so it's not far-fetched to believe that Lavos did the same thing to Schala before they became the Dream Devourer. Each member of the family has their own "dark side" which was more or less the result of Lavos's presence, whether direct or indirect.

What I'd like to know is, the Lavos that fused with Schala...was that a new Lavos spawn or the same Lavos that Magus and co. destroyed?

Quote from: Marle, on Opassa Beach
A new species is about to be
born on this planet -- an
   alien life-form even more
   evolved than the old Lavos!
   At the darkness beyond time,
   the weakened Schala came under
   the influence of Lavos, and
   the two became one entity
.

It was Lavos.

How did this topic go from Dalton to Magus to Schala?

I noticed that when Queen Zeal summons the Mega Mutant in the Black Omen, she uses the same kind of black portal that Dalton uses for his Golems.
