Enmity
« on: November 26, 2008, 04:01:53 am »
After briefly playing CC again it occured strange to me that Lynx talked about enmity after attaining Serge's body. What did he mean by that? At first I didn't even know what it meant, but I read somewhere it means "to be an enemy" or something like that. Does he mean the real Serge is becoming his enemy again..? Or what?

Quote from: Lynx, Fort Dragonia
The enmity is growing... The only thing pure in this world is enmity.

Hmm...it could mean the hatred is growing. Interestingly enough though, enmity tends to mean hatred between two people or things. At one point Harle says this:
Quote from: Harle
   Serge, mon ami!
   Your humain world
   iz about to end!

   At zat time, zere
   shall be enmity between
   you and ze world.
And later on Lynx says:
Quote from: Lynx
   Listen to me...
   The end of the human
   world is nigh!
   When this time comes, Serge,
there shall be a deep enmity
   between you and the world!
   This is not speculation
   or prediction...
   This is history!
Radius and Garai also use the word enmity to describe the Masamune, but most interesting is what Marle says, regarding enmity and Schala:
Quote from: Marle, in Chrono Cross
Use the '"song of life"' to heal
   her enmity and suffering...
   We entreat you, Serge!
   Please save Schala...

   Please!
   Use the song of life
   to heal her enmity
   and suffering...
   You're the only one
   that can do it!
Anyhow, I didn't mean to bombard you with quotes, but basically the word enmity is used quite often in CC, and it's usually use to describe the relationship between two great things: Serge and his effect on the world, Schala's anger (at humanity, possibly), and Radius's relationship with the Masamune. However, the enmity Lynx is referring to is the same that Harle mentioned, and the same enmity that he mentioned earlier: Serge and his effect on the end of the human world.

I wish I picked up on this, I had no idea that enmity was another key factor in the game...

It refers to Schala's extreme hatred and wish for all existence to be destroyed.

I know, I guess even one part of Mother Brain makes a Mechaniloid go Maverick (Yes, I am a MegaMan X fan)

Well, this is tied very closely to one of Chrono Cross' more subdued plotlines. Serge is the Arbiter of the Frozen Flame, and it is hinted through out Cross that the his status as Arbiter could bring about the end of the world, by allowing the Devourer to consume time. Essentially, if Serge became bitter and despaired (as Schala did), and desired to destroy the world because of his troubles, he had that ability. (Notice what the fortune teller in Termina says to Serge.) The "enmity" referred to is Serge's anger at his fate. FATE obviously calculates that Serge will take this course of action, and desires to take away his status as Arbiter, so that this can not happen. (Perhaps if Lynx and FATE had not intervened, Serge would have taken a different course, and chosen destruction.)

There you have it.

So... what, the incident(s) at Viper Manor and/or Fort Dragonia (either one, the other, or both, because in both incidents Lynx messes with Serge's head with the Dragon Tear) are the locks that sealed Serge's fate to be a good guy?

It's a distinct possibility, yes. There's no way to know for sure, because we do not get to see much of a timeline without FATE's intervention.

I see. Thanks. Question, BTW. You really Art Garfunkel?

Of course. We could go ahead and turn this into a full on inside joke. The site retrospective could include a blurb about Art Garfunkel himself coming to the forums, with Simon staunchly refusing thanks to his fear of light blue color shemes.
