This is a link to an absolutely wonderful tutorial for doing 3D artwork...

For anyone looking to learn a little of the skill, I suggest checking it out at least once...

Unfortunately the pages load a little bit slow...

It does help to be familiar with some of the tools in 3DS Max and/or their equivelents in other programs...

anyway here goes...:

Joan of Ark

It's very detailed and includes everything from start to finish on how to make a 3D character.

(I'm currently doing it in Maya just for fun...and because the model is pretty nice in the end...)

Damn, fully-armored Joan with the split skirt is pretty awesome looking. Seems like a useful tutorial as well.

I'll have to show this to my bro.  He spends hours on end working with Blender.  He might find it useful.

Hmmm...Delta Dragon, does your bro have an interest in Chrono Cross by any chance?

I'll give this a shot.

Say Satoh, what version of Maya do you use?

Well I use 8.5 primarily, but I did try 2008 for a while... (I downgraded so I could transfer files between home and college... 8.5 and 2008 don't get along so well...)

I like 8.5 better anyway...

Nice looks like we use the same thing. :P

Just started the leg, wondering what I could use as a substitute for the editable mesh it calls for.

I used a cube, extruded some faces, and applied  subdiv proxy (which I cabe switched on and off, it's the closedst thing I've found to Meshsmooth in max)

I used the "Split polygons tool" wherever it says to use cut.

aside from that I just used my intuition to follow which tool would work best in order to make my model look like the pictures...

When it says to make a visible or invisible edge, I switched to Edge Select mode and deleted or used split ploygons to make the edges look like the pic...

You mean downgrade.... seriously, I've been looking for a max exporter for maya for months now because Maya is so superior in ease of modeling...

But max has a better bone weighting system... (the irony being that I use maya for modeling and max for animating O.o; )

I have access to multiple versions of each and maya is superior-est

It's all of what you learned with. I've used Maya more often than anything else, tried Blender, but just didn't cut it for me.

Say wait, you two have 3Dmax? I have an ass load of Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess models all for 3d max, you want me to send you them?

I have them too XD! but I fear I may not have maya or max anymore... due to a potentially fatal worm... wish me luck.

yea, one is definitely generally partial to whatever they began using and becoming comfortable with first. I think we all need to understand that all of these applications are perfectly useful tools, just tools, and what really counts is the artist/creativity/drive/passion/etc.

uh oh, good luck with the worm, i hope you backed everything up!
