I'm extremely excited over this -- fans have taken official resources from the newer Metroid sidescrollers (looks like Zero Mission in the case of Samus' sprites) and breathed new life into them. The result looks brilliant.

If this doesn't garner a C&D, I will consider the floodgates open, at least as far as 2D projects are concerned.

EDIT: The developer's site/blog is here: http://metroid2remake.blogspot.com/

The resources used are actually a mix of official and fan-made resources I think. The fact that I can't tell which are which is a testament to the developer's skillset.

Argh, it can't be played on a Mac. Damn.

I really like the Metroid games. I'm a fan of the Prime series and recently got into Zero Mission and Fusion, which are awesome.

I liked the best metroid for NES than the new ones.

The Return of Samus was the best. Awesome boss fights against each evolution of the Metroids. It's not the Space Pirates series, y'know? It's all about fighting METROIDS!!! And doing it fast so you can get Samus in her undies/bikini! wh00t!

Well, anyways...ever since Zero Mission, I've wanted (& waited) for Ninny to remake The Return of Samus...but after seeing THIS, I dun know if a GBA-graphical style remake would slake my side-scrolling hunger...

THAT'S how Ninny should make our bounty hunter girl look. ^_^

Looks cool. Hopefully the full thing will be released before a C&D smacks them down. I'll be interested to play it when it's done.

Whoa, V -- that pic is freaking awesome. Hope someone tries for a whole fangame that looks like that, though it would run a serious risk of C&D.

A C&D is useless once it hits the net...but, yeah, I dun think that was meant to be a fan game...just a mock up of what COULD (/SHOULD) be done w/the series.

It also goes to show that 2-D > 3-D.  How I miss the days where games were sprite based...sadness

Some games even look better in 2-D > 3-D than totally in 3-D

The funny thing about Cease & Desists is that a company has to be aware of the project before they can issue one. A smart devteam would choose to not talk about the project while they're working on it, and instead reveal it only once it was complete, so as to ensure a Cease & Desist couldn't be issued during the development stage. Once the game was already out there, even if Nintendo made him take his own site down, it would prove impossible to fully put the cat back in the bag again.

Thus, the best way to protect these projects, is to NOT talk about them.

Aw, what the hell, I just looked on the blog and on that demo (I didn't watch the whole thing really) it shows the part when Samus goes into that completely dark area I remember from the game, but in his remake they're using the spotlight feature! Lame. I liked the barely knowing the layout and yet getting the health cannister anyways...it was awesome...god I loved that game...

Yeah I saw that. The controls are a bit screwy though. But metroid pwns halo..... Gonna get fanboys busting me for that one.
