alright then its settled, my next side project aside form school projects will be magus...

if you can direct me to some resources for a good source of magus reference pics (for robo i had like 1 pic other than sprites to use for reference, almost reference-less when modeled) that would help a lot. Even some detailed, accurate fan art would help.

thanks again

Yeah, a lot of props go to the texturing, too. He looks like Robo rather than some gold-plated polygon.

I'll see what I can scrounge up for Magus art. The best source I can think of off-hand for references is CuteLucca's art, especially Dark Matter from her Final Tech series. But that's a cape-swaddled profile, so you'll need more than that I imagine.

Here's some more that may or may not be useful as references; again, most aren't full-body pics.

Anyone know of some more fanarts Straafe could use as references?

http://www.geocities.com/linkerdrich/magus.jpg

that was my best so far.

anyway heres the game plan, im just going to rough out some mesh to his basic proportions (although undetailed), then i will begin to detail his face first. after im satisfied with the face, ill move on to the rest of the body, and last i will do the clothing/acessories.

There's so many ways to interpret Magus, but whatever you come up with will be awesome judging from your previous work. You may be interested in Magus' sprite sheet as well:

And there's also Magil from Radical Dreamers:

There was a really good fan artist by the name of Synn who did a plethora of Magus pics. I thought the art was a little on the, erm, "flowery" side, but it may be useful for clothing and accessories and that sort of thing. I'll see if I can track down Synn's site.

EDIT: Here it is. My, my, flowers everywhere. Synn tends to depict Magus' softer side, if he can be said to have one. Hence the flowers. We'll see how useful these are:

Here's a good one; a nice skull to offset the flowers. Damn nice boots, too: http://synn.egoism.jp/fa/sonccct/lordmagus.html

so roughed out the base mesh (undetailed). If you see anything seriously wrong with the proportions or something now is your time to shout.

You'd probably get more views in Kajar Labs anyway. It's the happening place for WIP or idea discussion.

I know i said i wasnt going to post any progress but i changed my mind

note that most of him except for half of his arm will be covered in clothing so the detail there was created more for displacing cloth than for show. Those parts are also much less detailed.

This is only my first version and may not represent the end product very well, so critique away

To say that you have real talent is, once again, and understatement.

Will his eyes be red in the final version, or is that just something you did to differentiate the eyes from the rest of the model?

And have you had formal art training? Looking at your work I would guess yes; but if it's possible to create this sort of thing by sheer will and patience alone, there is still hope for hapless folks like me. 8)
