Creative Juices Time

Okay, here's a new topic...
A LOT of us have thought about what a Chrono Trigger/Cross sequel would look like.  But how about a PREquel?  Would such a thing even be possible given the story thus far?  If you had to write one, what would it look like...

Any prequel would not be set on the Chrono planet nor would it involve any characters already established, Lavos included. Instead, it would explore the history of the Lavosian entities...their species, their sentience--or lack thereof--their evolution, ect ect. Presumably, for poetic reasons it would end with a spawn of a Lavoid leaving whatever Planet it is set upon...this Lavoid being, of course, Lavos...

But as for how it would work from a gameplay standpoint...I have no solid ideas. There are plenty of ideas already in existence that could work, such as the idea of the Lavosians being developed as a biological weapon gone out of control.

Same conclusion I reached. I imagined that the Lavos species emerged from a planet which, in its maturity, became aware of some...entity of oblivion. Like, imagine something with sentience on level of the planet, except not a giant chunk of rock. And this thing would bring about the end of the space-time continuum itself...

So, they designed Lavos to scour the universe and produce an evolutionary singularity -- the biological pinnacle of elemental power. This being would return to challenge the villain.

Still, that sounds pretty cold, and the idea that some civilization couldn't produce something better than that given a series of 65 million years is farfetched.

~

So, differing from that, Lavos could be written as an attempt to create God. Again, by decimating planets and absorbing their energies and inhabitants' genetics, an evolutionary singularity would be reached, like a maximum sentience. Except there's an issue...the Lavos candidates do not like this once attaining sentience. Their cold voyages across the voiceless stars; their solitude, and loneliness nesting in the chaotic hearts of planets; the slaughtering, massacring, and brutality required of their mission...they would grow to hate their creators and the universe, and only desire a single thing.

Lavos reached a fast track through the extraordinary events of the Chrono series, obtaining a position in the Darkness Beyond Time allowing the consumption of the space-time continuum itself. And Lavos was defeated in this regard. But eventually, after all the Lavos candidates perish, millions of years from now...there will only be one remaining: the singularity. And it will try to destroy the space-time continuum once it feels it is the final Lavos.

Still, that's really cold and not "Chrono", so who knows. Part of the attractiveness of the franchise is that it's limited to a single planet or even a set of islands. To introduce space might be a good or a bad thing...

I think it could be interesting to see a game set in a time far, far from... any era that we know of in the Chrono series. The game would involve a human population attempting to create a Lavos, but it would be a very ambiguous game; some people would think it's a prequel to CT set far in the past on some distant planet, while others may think it's a sequel to CC set far in the future on Crono and Serge's own planet...

Depending on the player's actions, you could actually prevent the creation of the Lavos and watch a "good ending", but that wouldn't mean it will be prevented for good. If someone tried to create it once, someone else could try to create another one, eventually... Throw in a bunch of philosophical and moral concepts, and it would overall not matter whether this game is a prequel or a sequel, it would be a "timeless" story expanding on the essential themes of the series and not rehashing anything already done in a previous game.

It would have to be before earth or something before lavos buried himself in earth.....

Well, by "prequel" I don't mean that it necessarily has to take place before 65M BC.  Just that some or all of its events decidedly lead up to those in Chrono Trigger/Cross.  Or, maybe, they span the events of CT and CC...

Why would that be difficult? Given the time it took for Lavos to mature and spawn new Lavoids, the species could easily be up to a billion years or more old. Sure, Lavos is the only Lavoid we know of that has actually sought out any Planet, but the existence of Lavos plus his ability to spawn makes it clear he is a species and not a singular individual.

But for that, you would either have to make it so that the main character fails at the end, and the lavos spawns move out to the galaxy, or that it cant be placed chronologically with the main story, and occurs on a planet in an unknown galactic time.

That second way is exactly what I suggest, in fact, because I'd rather not place something chronologically.

But I wouldn't mind a game where the main hero fails either--presuming, of course, the whole idea is some hero's quest against a Lavoid...which would be rather boring, trite, and has already been done.

No, if anything, I would think the main hero should be manipulated into helping a Lavoid for most of the game, and then tries to fight back only to fail because his weaknesses were understood by either the Lavoid or whomever the Lavoid uses to manipulate the main hero.

that would be epic, but a hero taking orders directly from a lavoid would be wierd, it would have to be something like schala...(not sure if I spelled that right, or even used the right name..) who is influenced by the lavoid, and then kights the hero to fight wars for her...

Yes, that would probably be required...otherwise the manipulation wouldn't be believable.

I would personally take the idea of The End Of Time, Gaspar and the God Of War, and devle into its mythology and begingings. Playing as perhaps a young gaspa, seeing lavos etc and gaining the knowlegde to help chrono and co. Like a Obi-Wan to Luke relationship. That way, we delve into lavos but still with the classic storytelling needs: characterisation. The End of the game sees Jaspar and the God of War reaching the end of time, and preparing for the inevitable arrival of Chrono and co.

Just an Idea I had. Mainly cause I want a game theme based on the end of time music. ;)

it cud be a prequel/sequel following the role of schala from before the fall of zeal through the death/defeat/whatever of the time devourer... but then again that might get weird when it goes through the story lines of chrono trigger/cross.. ah well
