I agree, the Alpha version probably wasn't as good as the current version.

However, because Chrono Trigger is so damn awesome, it would also be damn awesome to see the Alpha version. Not as the real thing, but just to see what was going on when they were still developing.

Quality is low, but his hair fringe definitely seems different. Very interesting status screenshot too; apparently characters had some sort of levels for each of the four Elements despite having a primary Element. Also the article says something about 24 megas? The final version is 32 megas I think.

I assume that the 'levels' for each element was for defence, rather than offence.  This stems from the stat menu showing 6 stats, rather than the 7 in the final version, which, in conjunction with the 4 elements, would indicate that Magic Defence was not one of the 6.  This is also backed by the fact that each enemy has magic defence for each type of magic.

A sound assumption I would say... Probably the reason why the removed the element-sensitive magic defense was either due to time or space constraints. (no that was not a pun, it does seem that way, though.)

oh, chrono trigger...

I don't think is was a "leveling system" per se, but rather an elemental defense system able to be possibly modified by equipment, spells, and effect items, where everyone has an innate value (say 5, 6, or 7 for example)

With some heavy modifying,... yeah I'd say it'd be fairly possible. It *would* add a whole new layer of strategy that I think would complement the game well.

EDIT: If we could look over some of the source code in the alpha rom I think everything should go more-or-less like clockwork, provided someone wants to undertake this project.

There was no Alpha rom ever released from what i've heard.  Your best bet is the pre-release, which i've been trying to modify some stuff from pre-release into the final.  And it also doesn't have half of the stuff the Alpha does >_<

Yea, it's a pretty old vid. At least in the eyes of the Compendium that is.
