just wanting to know has any one heard of the Hazon partical and if so what are your thoughts on the geneva partical accelerator?

While I've not heard about this Hazon Particle(but I am looking it up as I type) I have most definitely heard of the Geneva Partical Accelerator, and it has me extremely excited. The potentials for scientific advancement through study using this acceletator are incredible, to put it simply. Of course, there is the one in a million chance the accelerator will create a black hole capable of swallowing the entire planet, but that's just not going to happen.

That probably won't stop some extremist technophobic/religious groups from trying to stop the activation of this accelerator though...given how stupid some people can be about science and technology I would not be surprised to see many protests later this year.

the hazon is the fundamental partical that they are going to use it to look for the think that is ment to give all hadrons and baryons mass if found it will go to suport the steady ____ theory (i forget the name meh) so there is not much information on it
also the accelerator is guarenteed to create Black holes but they are unstable and thus will evaporate only a stable one will kill us all and end timers want the world to end George bush is one need i say more

Ah, something to support the Steady State theory, huh? Forget about it, then, because that theory is nonsense.

Okay, let's educate you here.

It is not guarenteed to create a singularity. A singularity is approximately a one in a million chance, and that's for an unstable one(though even an unstable one, if large enough, could do quite a bit of damage in the time it exists, presuming it exists for more than a few milliseconds.) A stable one would be far, far less likely, and at worst we're talking a micro-singularity, or essentially a black hole the size of the head of a pin. While this could do a lot of damage over time--especially if it were emitting radiation--it could be potentially contained.

Now, the absolute worst case scenario is so unlikely that it's just not going to happen, and if it did, we could do nothing about it. I see no reason to fear such a possibility precisely because it is so unlikely.

And as for George Bush, let's not bring politics into this, shall we?

Lu Su is talking about Bush's dogged intellectual support of the project. Black holes are an essential part of the administration's strategy in Iraq, and it's no secret that Bush himself has been a weighty presence in the planning and execution of the physics of fighting terror. Here he is just a few months ago demonstrating his War Calculus to reporters as part of his efforts to explain to us laypeople the need for a troop surge:

Ah, such elegance! Such simplicity! I would trust this man to solve the equations for creating a terrestrial black hole. In fact, one might argue he already has. And it's working! Iraq seems to have attracted every terrorist within four parsecs--including terrorists that weren't terrorists before. Has Bush disproved the theory of conservation of freedom as well? I smell another Nobel Prize...

]*funny stuff*
That was extremely amusing, but I was hoping to keep humour and politics apart from this discussion of science...I find that bringing humour and politics into scientific discussions often results in the truth being lost due to petty bickering.

I don't see much scientific discussion here, Kyronea. Don't take that the wrong way; there's a lot of enthusiasm here. But this is parlor chitchat. If we put a physics professor in this thread, told them it was a scientific discussion, and asked them to audit the integrity of the information here, I don't imagine they'd be terribly impressed.

So let us accept these kinds of threads for what they are, and not for what we might fancy them to be.

...true, true. I like to think that sometimes I know a large amount about these various subjects, but in truth I know only a little more than the average layman at best.

As such, humour us away, Lord J.

...judging from your spelling, I doubt you actually even know the formal definition of a black hole.

Heh. For some reason, this kind of thread has been giving me the creeps, lately. I guess it's about this "Look, I have pseudo-knowledge of stuff" impression they give me (exactly when such threads "try to be" serious).

When I would usually post some bullshit I simply have no will to...

Good thing Lord J always strikes when the time is right!

Now, back to that Navel practical exilaration ss... tuff!

Not pseudo-knowledge, but limited knowledge. My knowledge is not false, merely incomplete...by a huge amount.

And I certainly wasn't looking to blame anybody either. It's not a "blame" sort of thing, and there's no reason to single anybody out when all it would serve to do is discourage folks from continuing to be interested in this stuff.

Rather, like the noodly cup said, it's just a matter of my being put off by interest masquerading as knowledge. It's a natural impulse for us to feign expertise in subjects that interest us. In fact, we might not even realize what we're doing. We might subconsciously introduce make-belief information for the real thing, completely innocently. I have committed the same sort of impetuous mistakes, in days gone by. I still do, when I don't catch myself.

This is actually the sort of topic I love, but I can't get into it when I see misstatements flying but lack the expertise and credibility to correct them decisively. Hence my little Bush post, in lieu of participating in the core subject. But I won't overtly politicize the topic. Politics, if you can believe it, are only a minor province in the Realm of J.

I know, I know! It's a hole, right? And it's BLACK, right? Basically, a hole that's black?

I agree...I'll oftentimes toss misinformation across the board when a subject interests me, though lately I'm finally catching myself in it.

My knowledge in this area is extremely limited at best....all I could do was correct Lu Su's foolish misinterpretations of what was going on. The guy believes in the bloody Steady State theory! Come on, people!

In any case, I'll duck out now, lest I embarrass myself further in the face of people I somewhat respect due to their work on Chrono theorying.
