I start my driving today!
« on: February 17, 2007, 01:52:53 pm »
Boy, I am sooooo scared. I'm really nervous. Anyone else ever been scared when they first drove?

Oh, and if you guys don't hear from me again, that means I'm dead. Because most likely, I'm going to crash.

Stay calm and relax. You'll be able to focus that way. I haven't attempted driving yet, so I can't offer much advice.

Just do as you were (or are going to be) taught and you will be fine. Driving is much easier than it seems in the eyes of people who do not drive.

I never had any anxiety issues about learning to drive. It was exciting, edifying, liberating, and just plain cool. It was months or even a year after I started driving when the anxiety phase hit me, as I started to appreciate the true risks that come with controlling thousands of pounds of metal at high speeds in confined spaces with countless obstacles. But that anxiety faded, with time and experience--and a few close calls. Everybody, I think, has a few close calls as they're learning.

My advice? Don't fuck around when you're driving. Don't try to impress your friends, don't try to file your taxes, and don't eat. There are better reasons, and ways, to die.

etheir that or he wants to be the cause of your death

my advice stay calm, don't drive on the wrong side of the road (which ever one that is) and take it slow until your more confident
and if your don't pas your test first time don't worry people who have to resit their test generaly become better drivers (don' ask)

At the speeds you're going, with the kind of mass you're moving, "just a second" not paying attention to what's going on can be devestating. The radio, the air conditioning, anything else you set up before you leave the parking spot.

And for fuck's sake, ignore your cell phone. The moment you answer your phone, you're as dangerous to yourself and others as a drunk.

Well, I did well for a first timer. I didn't go over the speed limit on the freeway, but I need to judge my braking distance better.

I'm not gonna play Captain Obvious here, my good sir. Of course it's about the asking part. Oh bother.

That'll take you awhile, trust me.

Also, a tip: even though speedometers on cars are usually not entirely accurate and thus you're typically going a couple MPH/five-seven KPH slower than the speedometer says you are, try to stick to keeping it at the speed limit max unless traffic absolutely forces you otherwise, which it can on major highways. This way you avoid the police. I got a speeding ticket last year--well, actually a year and a half ago--and I've stuck to this ever since. It'll occasionally piss off other drivers but it's safer--usually--and keeps you out of trouble.
