Are voices possible?

If you could extract the sounds of certain things, could voices be possible?  Like extract Crono's sword slash and put like some random voice in and then reimport it to the rom.  Just wondering..

I'm sure it's possible, although all one has to do is listen to games like Tales of Phantasia to hear how horrible the voice quality sounds. Unless you want to import .wavs and balloon the ROM's filesize, then you're going to have to convert them to .midis and risk a much lower quality.

I've been putting WAV files as voices in my RPG (using RPG Maker 2003), and they sound fine. But I guess it would be different for SNES games...  :lee:

I don't even think it'd be possible at all in Chrono Trigger. The two games I know of that make extensive uses of voices, Tales of Symphonia and Star Ocean, have a lot of specialized code dedicated to making it work which Chrono Trigger simply lacks.

Space is the issue. Take The Lion King. Frank Klepacki was allowed to use voice samples in the music since they're pretty integral to the game's score. On the other hand, Nobuo Uematsu just wouldn't have been able to fit an entire opera into FF6 and had to settle for the voice synth.
